Q&A With Katherine Lewis, Founder of the Institute for Independent Journalists
The independent journalist on freelancing, rates, and contract negotiations.
Katherine Lewis is an independent journalist based in Washington D.C. In 2018, she published The Good News About Behavior, a book that challenges conventions of parenting and discipline. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, her speaking engagements gig disappeared and she lost a significant portion of her income. Feeling emotionally and financially depleted, she reached out to some of her journalist colleagues. They organized monthly Zoom meetings to exchange notes on applications and advice on managing this uncertain chapter of media. The group consisted entirely of women of color.
