The media industry is at a crossroads. As AI writing tools have flooded the market, writers are feeling increasingly anxious about what comes next. Since its founding, Study Hall has prioritized the needs of freelancers. Especially during this era of heightened uncertainty, we believe it is essential to have an open and honest discussion about how technology is changing our professions.
In this webinar panel, three seasoned journalists — Taylor Lorenz, Alexandra Marvar, and Brian Merchant — will share how media workers can navigate AI tools and the various ways in which this technology has transformed the industry.
This panel will touch upon how legacy media outlets are coming up with AI rules, and what writers can do to protect their work. In addition, the panelists will discuss larger questions about how AI has changed the industry: Is it possible to integrate these tools in a workflow without plagiarizing other writers' work? Is there a double standard of media outlets banning freelancers from using these tools, while editors use in-house AI tools? What does it mean to have original prose in a time when LLMs can mimic style?
