Andrea Javor Wrote About How Smoking Has Made A Comeback

by | August 11, 2025

For USA Today, Andrea Javor wrote about whether smoking is returning to mainstream culture.  Javor told Study Hall, “I had a strong opinion that smoking was reentering the cultural zeitgeist, yet data from the CDC showed that smoking rates were not yet increasing. I worked with an opinions editor I met in a workshop to pitch him the idea that we need to again focus on funding for anti-smoking efforts before we backslide as a society into the filthy, yet tempting, habit. What I loved about working with this editor is he let me take a cultural spin and theorize WHY people may be smoking again which I linked to increased distrust in institutions.”

Javor’s writing has appeared in The Guardian, Vogue, Slate, and other outlets.
