Anson Tong Reviewed Susan Choi’s Novel “Flashlight”

For the Chicago Review of Books, Anson Tong reviewed Flashlight, the new novel by Susan Choi.

Tong told Study Hall, “Flashlight is about what goes unsaid and unknown in a family at the whims of historical forces larger than any of us.”

Tong writes, “The characters in Flashlight are complex, sometimes stuck in their ways. Each carries their own shard of a bigger story, accidentally cutting themselves and others on the sharp edges. Putting the pieces together wouldn’t render a complete picture, but it can form a beautiful mosaic.”

Tong’s writing has appeared in The Rumpus, The Brooklyn Rail, and other outlets.
