Kathryn Stelmach Artuso Reported On Interfaith Hospitality and Immigration
For Camarillo Acorn, Kathryn Stelmach Artuso reported on a forum that the Ventura County Interfaith Community co-hosted.
Kathryn told Study Hall that the forum “provided profound insights into historical parallels as well as portraits of courage during World War II, when Albanian Muslims and Christians harbored and rescued Jewish refugees during the Nazi occupation. Albania began with a population of 200 Jews at the beginning of the war, but it was unusual among European nations because that number increased—with more than 2,000 Jews rescued by the end of the war. This was due to the foundational concept of Besa in Albanian culture, roughly translated as ‘pledge of honor’ or ‘solemn oath,’ a concept rooted in centuries-old tribal traditions and customary law, and which requires extraordinary hospitality toward guests and strangers—to “keep the promise and take care of others in need.”
Kathryn’s writing has appeared in Whittier Daily News, Daily Breeze, The Orange County Register, and other outlets.
