Katie Nadworny Reported on The Past, Present, and Future Threat of Istanbul Running Out of Water.
For BBC Future, Katie Nadworny explored the “past, present, and future of Istanbul’s water: how the aqueducts of ancient times satiated an imperial city,” and “how the massive 20th-century expansion of Istanbul’s population strained its delicate resources.” The article also touches upon how Istanbul residents can “manage a megacity that is constantly under threat of going dry.”
Nadworny told Study Hall, “Istanbul is a city of water, hemmed in by it on all sides; all salt water bodies, with no river to provide freshwater. As its status as a city of local and global importance has grown, the city has stretched out, swallowed its suburbs, and become very, very thirsty.”
Katie’s writing has appeared in The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Guardian, and other outlets.
