Study Hall Member Emma Smith Wrote About Navigating The Healthcare System With A Long Covid Diagnosis

by | July 18, 2024

For The Oregonian, Emma Smith wrote about her experience navigating the healthcare system to arrive at a Long COVID diagnosis. As society at large has returned to normalcy, Smith says that she — and other people with Long COVID known as Long Haulers — are still struggling.

She writes, “I’m the patient that the public wants to forget. While many are ready to move on and resume life with none of the precautionary measures of the pandemic, I cannot. I’m one of about 200,000 Oregonians who have had or continue to have Long COVID – a collection of symptoms ranging from fatigue to brain fog and that can last days, weeks or years.”

Her essay recounts how she participated in a clinical trial for Long Haulers. Smith has also written about how COVID-19 became so politicized.
