The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Marisa Clogher, who is too tired to explain themself right now. The newsletter is (usually) released on Thursdays. Once in a while, we take a day off or publish late for mental health breaks and holidays.

-The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides emergency grants of up to $10,000 for stories on threats to democracy in the US. The fund reviews proposals on a rolling basis and ends on December 31st, 2023.
-The Reporting Job Board by Investigative Reporters and Editors is a continually updated website for jobs in reporting, editing, academia, and more.
-“Knowing the News” is a new study by the American Press Institute about how Gen Z and Millennials get information on essential topics. The study focuses on six topics: national politics and government; social issues; crime and public safety; traffic, transportation, and weather; COVID-19 information; and health or mental health.
-“Funding News” is a new study by the American Press Institute about how news media can create content that Gen Z and Millennial consumers are willing to pay for or donate to directly. The study outlines the Americans ages 16 to 40 who pay for or donate to news in some fashion and compares those who pay for news to those who pay for independent creators.
–Accessible Social is a free resource hub that helps make your social media content more accessible to people with temporary or permanent disabilities, including vision and hearing impairments.

Regarding pitch calls, we try to only share opportunities with fair rates based on publicly available information. While we currently define “fair rates” as being above $100 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.10 per word for longer pieces, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES
–Study Hall (that’s us!) is looking for pitches for our weekly digest. We are looking for stories about media work and journalism, specifically ones that center workers. We’re interested in coverage of media gossip, disability rights in media, developments in LGBTQ+ media, BIPOC perspectives of the media industry, developments in AI, and tech’s role in the changing media industry. The digest includes a timely, 500- to 800-word lede essay followed by an assortment of four to six rubrics. The rate is $750.
-Type Investigations is looking for pitches on right-wing extremism, technology and its harms, the labor movement and economic inequality, climate change and environmental justice, and more. They want stories that “document wrongdoing and show who’s responsible.” They are not looking for “traditional profiles, cultural essays, true crime stories, or epic tales of adventure.” The rate range is $3,000 to $6,000, including travel expenses, for stories that are 3,000 to 5,000 words. –Rest of World is looking for pitches from African writers of “news stories and reports on topics of interest across the continent.” News stories range from 600 to 1,000 words, and reports range from 1,000 to 2,000 words. –Esquire is looking for pitches for their books and fiction section, as well as “author interviews, author profiles, book round-ups, essays about books, trend stories, and reported features about books and publishing.” They are not looking for traditional reviews, but rather longer essays about books and culture. The rate starts at $500, and the maximum length is 7,500 words. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Kotaku is looking for pitches about battle royales for an upcoming battle royale week. Rates start at $300 and go up depending on experience. They’re looking to run stories the week of March 20 to 30. Send pitches to [email protected].
–ApartmentAdvisor is looking for pitches of “reported features, Q&As, personal essays, data-driven stories” and more that deal with apartment renting for their blog. The length can range from 500 to over 1,500 words, and the rates range from $125 to $300, depending on the format and scope of the piece. Find more details about rates and how to pitch here.
–PUBLIC Journal is looking for pitches from emerging or mid-career journalists for their next issue which “explores the pluriverse, ‘a world where many worlds fit.’” The rate is CAD $225 ($163 USD) for 1,000 to 1,300 words. –Pittsburgh City Paper is looking for pitches of magazine-style features, roundups, and “hot, but not bad, takes” that are relevant to Pittsburgh. The rate is $150 to $500 depending on the amount of work involved. Send pitches to [email protected] with “Pitch” in the subject line.
–Salon is looking for pitches for “quick commentary columns on the topic of the week.” The rate is $150, but can go up for longer, more in-depth reporting. They are open to everyone but especially looking for “writers of color and femmes.” Send pitches to [email protected].
–Pride Source is looking for pitches for Pride coverage from queer writers, with an immediate focus on stories that can resonate with their Michigan audience. The rates range from $100 to $250, depending on the type of story. More info on what they’re looking for can be found here. Send pitches to [email protected].
–The Dry River is looking for pitches of reported features for their upcoming “Warmth” issue. The theme “can be interpreted literally or figuratively.” LA writers are preferred but others are welcome to pitch. The rate is $0.10 per word for a minimum of 1,000 words. –SFGATE is always looking for pitches of stories of unique living situations, deep dives into unique communities, stories behind well-known buildings, Bay Area housing meetings, and more. The rate starts at $250. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Medicinal Media is always looking for pitches of reported features, analysis, op-eds, roundups, and quick summaries on the latest in relevant science, art, media, tech, wellness, etc. The rate is $150-$450 for stores ranging from 300 words to over 1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected], and include info about yourself, why the pitch is significant to you, as well as links to published work.
–Fast Company is always looking for pitches about workplace culture, leadership and hiring trends, careers, or equity and inclusion efforts. The rate starts at $400 for reported pieces. Send pitches to [email protected].

FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
NEW: –Times Union and Radio Catskill are looking for a Catskills-based reporter for a series on rural housing issues in that part of New York, which will include three to five articles and some radio work. The rate will be at least $0.50 per word. Email [email protected] for more info.
NEW: –Daily Meal is hiring a freelance food and beverage writer to research and write 300- to 900-word articles on “all the hottest food news.” Candidates should ideally have at least one year of writing and editing experience. The rate is $21 per hour, and the position is fully remote.
–New Scientist is hiring a 6-month, full-time social video intern to “source footage from scientific researchers, script and edit short-form social videos and post them” across platforms. Candidates should have a science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or computing degree. The pay is $25.65 per hour, and the position is based in Manhattan, New York. –BuzzFeed is hiring a project-based timely celebrity news writer. Candidates will cover “music, TV, film, fashion, beauty, sports, etc.” Remote candidates are eligible. The rate is $20 to $30 per hour.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
NEW: –Oregon Humanities is accepting submissions “about home, sanctuary, and refuge of all kinds” for their summer 2023 issue themed “Shelter.” They’re looking for personal essays, journalistic pieces, and book excerpts from Oregon writers. The pay is $500 to $1,000. The deadline to submit is April 24.
NEW: –Grist is now accepting submissions for Imagine 2200, a “climate fiction short story contest.” They’re looking for stories that are 3,000 to 5,000 words that “envision the next 180 years of climate progress” and that imagine “intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope.” The first place winner will receive $3,000, second place will receive $2,000, third place will receive $1,000, and nine finalists will receive $300. The deadline to submit is June 13.
–The Atlantic is accepting applications for its 2023 Michael Kelly Award. The award recognizes work published in a US-based print or online publication that exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth.” The winning entry will be awarded $25,000, and each finalist will receive $3,000. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 31.
-GALECA is accepting submissions for their Crimson Honors Scholarship contest. The contest requires submitting “up to [three] reviews or essays” on film or TV, and contestants must be “BIPOC LGBTQ+ women, [or] nonbinary students of color” who “attended a public college or university in the US or its territories in 2022.” The grand prize winner will receive $3,000, with two finalists each collecting $1,500. The deadline to submit is April 1.
–Narratively is accepting submissions for their 2023 Profile Prize contest. They are looking for profile pieces that “tell the story of ordinary people or communities doing extraordinary things.” The grand prize winner will receive $3,000, and the two finalists will receive $1,000 each. There is a $20 entry fee and the deadline to submit is April 14.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
NEW: –Slate is hiring a summer editorial intern for their technology section, “which encompasses science, health, tech, tech policy, and business, and includes the Future Tense vertical.” The internship will run from June to September. The rate is $15 per hour for 20 to 40 hours of work per week. Candidates can work from Slate’s DC or Brooklyn office, or remotely. The deadline to apply is March 27.
NEW: –Mashable is hiring a shopping intern to write about products across technology, entertainment, and culture. Candidates should have some journalism experience. The rate is $15 per hour, and the position is fully remote.
NEW: The Hechinger Report is accepting applications for the summer reporting internship. Interns will “research, conduct interviews and write about national K-12 education issues.” Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and previous experience interning at a news outlet. The pay is $650 per week. The deadline to apply is April 14.
NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for their Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship designed to give “academic and professional opportunities to women journalists committed to human rights and social justice reporting.” Candidates should be working journalists with at least three years of full-time journalism experience. Candidates from around the world are eligible but must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English. Candidates will be given a $2,000 monthly stipend for six months. -Farrar, Straus and Giroux is accepting applications for their yearlong FSG Writer’s Fellowship designed to provide “funding, editorial guidance, and advice on how to forge a writing career.” Fellows will receive $15,000 in two installments, one at the start of the fellowship and one in February 2024. Candidates should not have published a “book-length work in any genre, have a book under contract, or be negotiating a contract either in the United States or abroad” by the fellowship’s start.
–High Country News is accepting applications for their yearlong Virginia Spencer Davis Fellowship which is designed for “early-career journalists interested in reporting on rural communities in the [American] West.” Fellows will aim to publish 24 stories over the course of the fellowship. Fellows are expected to work 32.5 hours per week, and will receive a biweekly stipend of $1,250, as well as a $100 work-from-home allowance and a $500 starting bonus. The position is remote and open to candidates in Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming. The deadline to apply is April 21.
–The Nation is accepting applications for their annual internship. The internship is full-time, five days a week, and 35 hours per week. It lasts six months, from June to December. Interns are paid $18 per hour. Remote candidates will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates in New York who can come into the office. The deadline to apply is May 12.
-Wake Forest University is accepting applications for their Environmental Epistemic Justice Summer Institute. The fellowship will welcome 4-6 early- to mid-career journalists to attend a summer institute from June 26-30, 2023 to examine the “ways race and regimes of racial knowledge shape and inform our scholarly practices, public policies, and normative concerns.” Fellows will also receive a $2,500 reporting stipend. The deadline to apply is March 20.
JOBS
NORTHWEST
–The Spokesman-Review is hiring for multiple positions including health reporter, business reporter, and education reporter. The salary range is $42,000 to $47,000 per year. The positions are based in Spokane, Washington.
–5280 is hiring a senior editor to assign, edit, and write stories for their digital platforms. Candidates should have at least four years of experience in journalism and editing in digital media. The salary starts at $58,000 and includes benefits. The position is based in Denver, Colorado.
REMOTE FRIENDLY
–The Examination is hiring for multiple positions including managing editor, investigations editor, senior reporter, and tobacco reporter. Qualifications and salary range vary based on the position and all are remote-friendly. Applicants can email [email protected] with any questions.
–The Marshall Project is hiring a full-time audience engagement producer to write social copy and produce quote cards and other visuals for the social media accounts. Candidates should have journalism and social media management experience, as well as thoughts on reaching previously incarcerated people or others touched by the criminal legal system.
–The Wrap is hiring a full-time film reporter with “contacts and extensive bylines” to write about film and film industry news. Candidates should have at least three years professional experience writing about film for professional outlets and be proficient on a CMS, such as WordPress.
