Asha Dore Wrote An Op-Ed About Misunderstandings Around Autism
For Splinter, Asha Dore wrote an op-ed about how RFK Jr.’s recent statements regarding neurodivergence highlight misunderstandings of autism. Additionally, Dore criticizes The Telepathy Tapes, a podcast which wrongly claims that “people who are significantly impacted by autism are telepathic.”
In this op-ed, Dore addresses how both demonstrate a broader disregard for the actual lived experiences of neurodivergent people.
She writes, ““If we can believe that disability is caused by a villain that needs to be vanquished, we can ignore the real villains: politicians who cut public health measures and severely limit research funding. If we can believe in a magical being trapped inside a person with significant challenges, we don’t have to face the actual traps in our society: We are often afraid of disability and illness.”
Dore’s writing has appeared in The Cut, HuffPost, Slate, and other outlets.
