Abby Carney Reported On A Political Love Story

by | June 25, 2025

For The New York Times, Abby Carney reported on the wedding of Sean McElwee and Rachel Kelly Atcheson and traces how their love story touches upon the overlap between politics and romance. Carney writes, “The two are strong personalities with a penchant for debate and forging connections.”

Carney told Study Hall, “When I met an (at the time) Eric Adams staffer at a Climate Week event, and she mentioned that her upcoming wedding would feature “community building breakout sessions,” I was immediately intrigued and knew I had a story on my hands. I was also familiar with her now-husband, Sean McElwee, because he’s been in the news.”

She added, “I did two interviews with the couple, attended the wedding (my first time reporting on someone’s big day), and spent a LOT of time fact-checking and getting everything totally air tight with the politics, legal, and standards teams. I had an amazing experience working with my editor, Anya, who had my back every step of the way.”

Carney’s writing has appeared in GQ, Hell Gate, and The Guardian.
