Will Coldwell Reported On A Reunion For Britain’s Nuclear Test Veterans
For the Financial Times, Will Coldwell reported on his experience at an annual reunion for Britain’s nuclear test veterans. He told Study Hall about his reporting: “In Autumn, veterans of Britain’s Cold War nuclear testing programme gather at Pontins, a run-down seaside holiday park, for their annual reunion. I spent a week with the veterans and their families. Between the bingo, crazy golf and a spot of hula dancing, I learnt about their experience during the tests and the troubling legacy of nuclear weapons.”
He added, “Many of the veterans – now mostly in their late 80s – believe their health has been impacted by the radiation exposure. Some believe the genetic damage has been passed down the generations. The community have a shared experience that can be difficult for outsiders to fathom and the reunion is a rare chance to be surrounded by others who understand it. Mostly though, it’s a holiday.”
Coldwell’s writing has appeared in British GQ, 1843 Magazine, Observer, and other outlets.
