Study Hall Creative Opportunities 10/11/23

GENERAL SUBMISSIONS:
–Banshee Press, an independent print journal based in Ireland, is open for issue #17 submissions, welcoming stories, essays, flash pieces, and poems. Chosen contributors receive a small honorarium and a copy of the publication. To submit, email [email protected], with the genre in the subject line and a third person bio (max 50 words) included. The deadline is October 31.
–[PANK]––co-founded by Roxane Gay in 2006––is open for both chapbook and full-length manuscript submissions, welcoming work in any genre––poetry, fiction, short fiction, multi-genre work, experimental collaborative, etc. The deadline to submit is October 31, and there is an entry fee of $25 for full-length works and $20 for chapbooks.
–Michigan Quarterly Review is accepting submissions for their print journal, in the prose, poetry, and translation categories. All nonfiction submissions will be automatically considered for publication in MQR online. The deadline to submit is November 1 and there is an entry fee of $3.
–The Beloit Fiction Journal––the celebrated contemporary fiction print journal that began in 1985––is holding their annual reading period, welcoming stories up to 13,000 words on any subject or theme. There is an entry fee of $3 and the deadline to submit is November 16.
CONTESTS + PRIZES:
–The Changes Press Book Prize awards $10,000 and publication for a first or second collection of poems, with final selection this year by Eileen Myles. Publication includes national distribution, extensive advertising and publicity, and an NYC launch event. The deadline to submit is November 1 and there is no entry fee.
–Reed Magazine, California’s oldest literary journal, currently has 3 contests open: the John Steinbeck Award for Fiction, the Gabriele Rico Challenge for Nonfiction, the Edwin Markham Prize for Poetry, and the Mary Blair Award for Art. The deadline to submit is October 31, except for the Mary Blair Award for Art, which has a deadline of November 30. More information on each prize is on the Reed Magazine website, and there is an entry fee of $20 per contest.
–The Tucson Festival of Books Literary Awards are open for submissions in the nonfiction, fiction, and poetry categories. First, second, and third place winners in each category receive scholarships to the Festival’s Masters Workshop in March 2023. The deadline to submit is October 31 and there is an entry fee of $20 per submission.
–The Benjamin Saltman Award––held by Red Hen Press––welcomes submissions of unpublished poetry manuscripts between 48-96 pages. The winner receives $3000 and publication by Red Hen Press. The deadline to submit is October 31 and there is a $25 reading fee.
–The Yale Younger Series of Poets is open for manuscript submissions from emerging poets who have not yet published a full-length book and who reside in the United States. The winner receives a $1000 advance and a publication contract from Yale University Press, as well as one of six writing fellowships offered at The James Merrill House in Stonington, CT. The current series judge is Rae Armantrout. The deadline to submit is November 15, and the reading fee is $25.
JOBS:
–Pratt Institute in Brooklyn is hiring an Archive and Content Manager in their School of Architecture. The position is focused on the creation and maintenance of archiving, documentation and dissemination systems for student and faculty work, and includes creating communications materials and social media posts as well as supporting the Dean’s Office work on publications, events, and exhibitions. The salary range is $57,800 – $63,800 and applications can be submitted through Interfolio.
–Northeastern University is hiring a Writing Specialist. This part-time position works in the college’s Online Writing Laboratory, and teaches OWL lab courses throughout the academic year. The position requires an MFA in Creative Writing or Composition, or an MA in English, Communications, or a related field. Applications can be submitted through Workday.
–The Museum of the Moving Image in New York City is hiring a Development Director. The Director will provide management and leadership for development and fundraising activities that align with the Museum’s goals and strategies. The salary range is $120,000 – $140,000. FELLOWSHIPS + RESIDENCIES:
–Stanford University’s Wallace Stegner Fellowship is open to applications until November 1. Stanford offers 10 of the 2-year fellowships a year––5 in fiction, 5 in poetry. Stegner Fellows are regarded as working artists, intent upon practicing and perfecting their craft, and receive a $50,000 a year stipend. Applications can be submitted through the Creative Writing Department website.
–The Women’s Studio Workshop (in Rosendale, NY) is open to applications for their Artist’s Book Residency Grant. The Grant is a six- to eight-week residency for artists to produce a limited edition book work, with a stipend of $350/week, up to $750 for materials, up to $250 for travel within the US, free onsite housing, and 24/7 studio housing. The deadline to apply is November 15, and the full application is available on Submittable.
OPEN QUERIES:
–Elisa Huout from The Seymour Agency is currently open to queries for Adult Fiction, looking for cozy mysteries, thrillers, or romance works. She is also open to picture books, middle grade fiction, young adult, and new adult. Full details on her wish list can be found on the agency’s website.
