The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Marisa Clogher, who finally watched the new “Puss in Boots” movie and it was actually very good. The newsletter is (usually) released on Thursdays. Once in a while, we take a day off or publish late for mental health breaks and holidays.

-The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides emergency grants of up to $10,000 for stories on threats to democracy in the US. The fund reviews proposals on a rolling basis and ends on December 31st, 2023.
-The Reporting Job Board by Investigative Reporters and Editors is a continually updated website for jobs in reporting, editing, academia, and more.
-”Knowing the News” is a new study by the American Press Institute about how Gen Z and Millennials get information on essential topics. The study focuses on six topics: national politics and government; social issues; crime and public safety; traffic, transportation, and weather; COVID-19 information; and health or mental health.
-“Funding News” is a new study by the American Press Institute about how news media can create content that Gen Z and Millennial consumers are willing to pay for or donate to directly. The study outlines the Americans ages 16 to 40 who pay for or donate to news in some fashion and compares those who pay for news to those who pay for independent creators.
–Accessible Social is a free resource hub that helps make your social media content more accessible to people with temporary or permanent disabilities, including vision and hearing impairments.

Regarding pitch calls, we try to only share opportunities with fair rates based on publicly available information. While we currently define “fair rates” as being above $100 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.10 per word for longer pieces, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES
–Rest of World is looking for pitches of “local stories with global implications, which focus on any country except the US, Canada, the UK, Western Europe, and Australia.” They are looking for narrative stories of 3,000 words or more. The rates start at $1 per word. Send pitches to [email protected] and/or [email protected]. More information can be found in their pitch guide.
–Study Hall (that’s us!) is looking for pitches for our weekly digest. We are looking for stories about media work and journalism, specifically ones that center workers. We’re interested in coverage of media gossip, disability rights in media, developments in LGBTQ+ media, BIPOC perspectives of the media industry, developments in AI, and tech’s role in the changing media industry. The digest includes a timely, 500- to 800-word lede essay followed by an assortment of four to six rubrics. The rate is $750.
–The Parliament is accepting pitches for their upcoming Urban Planning and Design edition. They’re looking for “reported feature pitches exploring the ways in which urban planning and urban design shape Europe’s cities and communities,” “profiles and interviews with major players in European urban planning and urban design,” as well as book reviews. The rates range from $0.55 to $0.50 euros per word, and pitches are welcome from “anywhere in the bloc.” The deadline to pitch is this Tuesday, March 14.
–Rest of World is looking for pitches from African writers of “news stories and reports on topics of interest across the continent.” News stories range from 600 to 1,000 words, and reports range from 1,000 to 2,000 words. –Good Beer Hunting is looking for pitches of short profiles of “gas stations, convenience stores, and other unconventional spaces that have functioned as pivotal craft beer hubs.” They are specifically looking for venues in middle America and the Rockies, and proximity to venues is preferred. The rate is $300 for 500-750 words. Send pitches to [email protected].
–SimplePractice is looking for pitches on private practice mental health topics. They’re accepting pitches from “licensed clinicians who are also writers” as well as “journalists who interview clinicians.” The rate is $300-$500 per piece. Send pitches to @JessBeeGood on Twitter.
–Guardian Australia is looking for pitches that they can “run at any point over next few months,” including heartfelt stories, funny experiences, niche interests, and more. The rate is $300 AUD (or USD $199). Send pitches to [email protected] with the subject “PITCH EVERGREEN.”
–Kotaku is looking for pitches about battle royales for an upcoming battle royale week. Rates start at $300 and go up depending on experience. They’re looking to run stories the week of March 20 to 30. Send pitches to [email protected].
–ApartmentAdvisor is looking for pitches of “reported features, Q&As, personal essays, data-driven stories” and more that deal with apartment renting for their blog. The length can range from 500 to over 1,500 words, and the rates range from $125 to $300, depending on the format and scope of the piece. Find more details about rates and how to pitch here.
–PUBLIC Journal is looking for pitches from emerging or mid-career journalists for their next issue which “explores the pluriverse, ‘a world where many worlds fit.’” The rate is CAD $225 ($163 USD) for 1,000 to 1,300 words. –Pittsburgh City Paper is looking for pitches of magazine-style features, roundups, and “hot, but not bad, takes” that are relevant to Pittsburgh. The rate is $150 to $500 depending on the amount of work involved. Send pitches to [email protected] with “Pitch” in the subject line.
–Salon is looking for pitches for “quick commentary columns on the topic of the week.” The rate is $150, but can go up for longer, more in-depth reporting. They are open to everyone but especially looking for “writers of color and femmes.” Send pitches to [email protected].
–Tribeza is looking for pitches of articles on the best restaurants, events, design, wellness, and culture stories in Austin, TX. The rates range from $100-$200 per piece. Send pitches to [email protected] by March 31.
–The Dry River is looking for pitches of reported features for their upcoming “Warmth” issue. The theme “can be interpreted literally or figuratively.” LA writers are preferred but others are welcome to pitch. The rate is $0.10 per word for a minimum of 1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by May 1.
NEW EVERGREEN PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES
–High Country News is always looking for pitches “in the Southwest where ecology, place and culture/identity intersect.” The rate is $1 per word for pieces that are 650 to 2,000 words, but shorter pieces are recommended. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Bon Appétit is always looking for pitches from writers with “strong feelings about one of your city’s most iconic dishes.” They are prioritizing pitches from longtime locals. The rate is $500. Send pitches to [email protected].
–The Common is always looking for pitches for book reviews about books “that [engage] with the notion of place.” They are particularly interested in books of any genre written by BIPOC writers and from indie presses. The rate is $200 for reviews of 1,200 to 1,500 words. Send pitches to [email protected].
–HelloGiggles is always looking for pitches for personal essays or as-told-tos on pivotal life moments or difficult emotional terrain in relationships, and did-you-know reported stories on brands beloved by millennial women. Rates start at $200. Send pitches to [email protected].
-Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association is always looking for pitches of original nonfiction articles that “might be of interest to new and/or established creators of science fiction and fantasy” for their blog. The ideal length is 800 to 1,000 words, and the rate is $0.10 per word. Submit pitches here.

FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
NEW: –New Scientist is hiring a 6-month, full-time social video intern to “source footage from scientific researchers, script and edit short-form social videos and post them” across platforms. Candidates should have a science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or computing degree. The pay is $25.65 per hour, and the position is based in Manhattan, New York. Candidates can apply on LinkedIn or send materials to [email protected].
NEW: –BuzzFeed is hiring a project-based timely celebrity news writer. Candidates will cover “music, TV, film, fashion, beauty, sports, etc.” Remote candidates are eligible. The rate is $20 to $30 per hour.
–Grist Magazine is hiring a year-long reporter to cover “climate impacts, environmental health, and solutions to the climate crisis, primarily for a local and regional audience.” Candidates should have at least two years experience working in digital or broadcast journalism; radio experience is a plus, but not a requirement. The job is based in Northern Michigan, and the salary is between $50,000 and $58,000 depending on experience.
–Lonely Planet is looking for writers to help them create a new guidebook for Japan. Writers should ideally live in Japan or have traveled there extensively. Research would take place between April and June. The rate is “upwards of $1,500 dependent on word count and research times.” Candidates should fill out this application, and the deadline is this Sunday, March 12.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
–The Atlantic is accepting applications for its 2023 Michael Kelly Award. The award recognizes work published in a US-based print or online publication that exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth.” The winning entry will be awarded $25,000, and each finalist will receive $3,000. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 31.
-GALECA is accepting submissions for their Crimson Honors Scholarship contest. The contest requires submitting “up to [three] reviews or essays” on film or TV, and contestants must be “BIPOC LGBTQ+ women, [or] nonbinary students of color” who “attended a public college or university in the US or its territories in 2022.” The grand prize winner will receive $3,000, with two finalists each collecting $1,500. The deadline to submit is April 1.
–Narratively is accepting submissions for their 2023 Profile Prize contest. They are looking for profile pieces that “tell the story of ordinary people or communities doing extraordinary things.” The grand prize winner will receive $3,000, and the two finalists will receive $1,000 each. There is a $20 entry fee and the deadline to submit is April 14.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
NEW: -Farrar, Straus and Giroux is accepting applications for their yearlong FSG Writer’s Fellowship designed to provide “funding, editorial guidance, and advice on how to forge a writing career.” Fellows will receive $15,000 in two installments, one at the start of the fellowship and one in February 2024. Candidates should not have published a “book-length work in any genre, have a book under contract, or be negotiating a contract either in the United States or abroad” by the fellowship’s start.
NEW: –High Country News is accepting applications for their yearlong Virginia Spencer Davis Fellowship which is designed for “early-career journalists interested in reporting on rural communities in the [American] West.” Fellows will aim to publish 24 stories over the course of the fellowship. Fellows are expected to work 32.5 hours per week, and will receive a biweekly stipend of $1,250, as well as a $100 work-from-home allowance and a $500 starting bonus. The position is remote and open to candidates in Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming. The deadline to apply is April 21.
NEW: –The Nation is accepting applications for their annual internship. The internship is full-time, five days a week, and 35 hours per week. It lasts six months, from June to December. Interns are paid $18 per hour. Remote candidates will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates in New York who can come into the office. The deadline to apply is May 12.
–BuzzFeed is accepting applications for their year-long editorial, lifestyle, pop culture, and trending news fellowships. The fellowships are fully remote, and the rate is $18 per hour. The deadline to apply is tomorrow, March 10.
-Wake Forest University is accepting applications for their Environmental Epistemic Justice Summer Institute. The fellowship will welcome 4-6 early- to mid-career journalists to attend a summer institute from June 26-30, 2023 to examine the “ways race and regimes of racial knowledge shape and inform our scholarly practices, public policies, and normative concerns.” Fellows will also receive a $2,500 reporting stipend. The deadline to apply is March 20.
-WNYC Studios’ “Death, Sex & Money” podcast is accepting applications for their summer internship program. Interns will pitch guest and episode ideas, create and upload social media content, and other tasks. The internship pays $17.50 per hour, and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week. The deadline to apply is next Wednesday, March 15.
JOBS
NEW YORK
–Inverse is hiring a full-time associate entertainment editor to edit articles about TV and movies with a focus on sci-fi, superheroes, and genre entertainment. Candidates should have a minimum of three years editing and writing experience. The salary range is $65,000 to $67,500.
NORTHWEST
–The Redmond Spokesman is hiring a full-time general assignment reporter to cover local stories in Redmond, Oregon. Candidates should have some reporting experience or work in the field. The position pays $19 to $21 per hour and is based in Redmond, Oregon.
CALIFORNIA
–SFGATE is hiring a full-time food editor to “toggle between fast-paced daily stories and the well-sourced, deep-dive features.” They are not looking for candidates who want to do “best” stories. Candidates should have at least three years experience of food writing and editing at a publication and should live in the Bay Area or be able to relocate once it’s safe to do so. The salary range, if hired in San Francisco, is $75,000 to $85,000.
SOUTH
–The Gulf States Newsroom is hiring a full-time healthcare reporter to cover “health care trends, disparities and outcomes across the South – in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.” Candidates should have at least two years experience of full-time reporting and be based in New Orleans. This is a grant-funded position, with funding guaranteed for a year. The salary range is $50,000 to $58,000, and includes benefits. Applications will begin being reviewed March 20.
REMOTE FRIENDLY
–Gear Patrol is hiring an associate editor to write and edit branded content. Candidates should have a minimum of three years experience working at a digital media company in a writing, editing, and content production capacity. The position is remote, but there are optional offices in New York and Los Angeles. The salary range is $65,000 to $85,000, and the job provides full benefits and unlimited PTO. Send your resume, LinkedIn profile, and a cover letter to [email protected] with the subject “Associate Editor, Gear Patrol Studios” by tomorrow, March 10 to apply.
–Vox is hiring a full-time climate editor to lead a team of reporters and editors in climate coverage. Candidates should have a deep understanding of “climate issues, biodiversity, and science” and experience managing writers. The salary range is $92,000 to $120,000, and the position is “benefits-eligible.”
–Bolts is hiring a full-time audience engagement editor to mine data analytics and expand their audience. Candidates should have experience managing audience engagement at a publication and familiarity with SEO strategies. The position is remote and the salary range is $78,000 to $85,000 and includes benefits, 401K contribution, and 14 weeks of paid family leave. Send application materials to [email protected].
-Global Press Institute is hiring a full-time editorial coach to lead a team of journalists in Latin America and “develop, assess and measure reporter professional development.” Candidates should have at least five years experience in a newsroom, be fluent in Spanish and English, and have a deep understanding of Latin America. The salary range is $65,000 to $75,000. The deadline to apply is March 20.
–STAT is hiring an equity editor to “guide coverage of issues at the intersection of race and science and medicine.” Candidates should have at least five years experience in daily journalism, as well as in editing and managing. The minimum salary is $90,000 and includes benefits. This position is remote-friendly, but candidates based in Boston are preferred.
INTERNATIONAL
–Sifted is hiring a senior reporter for a “wildcard” role—“tell us what you think we should be covering.” Candidates should have at least three years experience in journalism and be comfortable writing in many different formats. Applicants can be based in “any tech hub in Europe,” but their headquarters are in London. The salary range is £40,000 to £60,000 (USD $47,620 to $71,430).
