Study Hall Member Ellen Acconcia Wrote An Essay About Making Friends In A New Community

by | July 25, 2024

For Business Insider, Ellen Acconcia wrote an essay reflecting on her experience moving to a new community in 2020, experiencing “extreme loneliness,” and then reaching out to new people.  In her piece, she writes, “To meet new people, I stayed active and pursued my goals, but I also didn’t force it.” She notes how to socialize, she signed up for 30-minute workouts, volunteered, and did yoga classes.

Acconcia offers advice for people who are isolated, writing, “because much of our experience of loneliness is more about the quality of connections rather than the number of people we know, choosing events and activities strategically is an important element when battling isolation. Don’t rush the work of making new friends. By giving myself permission to go slowly, I found my place.”

Acconcia’s work has appeared in Lit Shark Magazine and The Sunlight Press.
