This American Life is hiring an editor to conceive and edit stories about race and identity. The editor will also manage three or four staff producers and reporters. Candidates should have a background in narrative journalism, and experience covering Black Lives Matter and policing is a plus. 

The Guardian US is hiring for multiple positions, including a deputy editor and news editor. Both positions will help develop coverage on race, identity, and inequality. Candidates should have a strong interest in racial justice and current affairs. 

-WNYC is hiring for multiple positions, including a host for their local broadcast of NPR’s Morning Edition news program and a host for their new weekly show in collaboration with The Atlantic. Candidates for both positions should have at least five years of journalism experience and three years of on-air hosting or broadcast reporting experience.

STAT, a publication about health and medicine, is hiring a Washington correspondent. The reporter will cover the government’s response to COVID-19, drug pricing reform, biomedical research funding, and other topics. Candidates should have experience as a beat reporter or equivalent experience covering health-related political stories. 

The Hill is hiring a campaign editor to shape their coverage of 2020 campaigns and beyond. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience, and expertise in campaigns and elections is a plus. 

-NPR is hiring a supervising producer and editor for their All Things Considered podcast. The job requires overseeing the planning and editing of content for air and publication and a passion for audio storytelling. Candidates should have a decade of journalism experience and at least two years of experience managing or mentoring staff. 

-The American Association for the Advancement of Science is hiring a news and information director to plan and oversee the production of news content that promotes AAAS initiatives and programs. Candidates should have at least five years of experience as an online news reporter, science writer, or public information officer. 

Greater Greater Washington is hiring a writer and editor to cover transportation, housing, and other public policy issues in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Candidates should have at least one year of experience as a writer and editor and a strong understanding of transportation and housing policy issues in Washington, DC. The position is remote for now, but may involve working in their DC office once it is safe to do so.

Austonia.com, a new digital-only news site, is hiring an Austin-based senior producer. The producer should be a “competitive Austin news and culture junkie with an entrepreneurial spirit” and have at least three years of managing experience as a producer or editor.

-California Newsroom, a statewide news partnership between all of California’s NPR stations, is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior investigations editor and a data journalist. Both roles will focus on abuses of power and betrayals of the public’s trust across the state. Candidates for both positions can be located anywhere in California.

The Ventura County Star, part of the USA Today Network, is hiring a Camarillo-based editor-in-chief to oversee the newsroom and lead their team of reporters and photographers. The job requires coordinating coverage with other Gannett newspapers in California and publications across the USA Today Network. Candidates should have at least five years of editing and media management experience. 

The Bakersfield Californian is hiring a news reporter to write and research stories on any news or feature topic as needed. Candidates should have previous experience as a reporter, which can include college experience as a reporter or editor. 

NORTHEAST

Reviewed is hiring a Boston-based kitchen and cooking editor to lead a two-person team (plus five to six regular freelance contributors) responsible for testing, writing, editing, and updating their Kitchen & Cooking product guides. Candidates should have at least three years of experience producing high-quality, rapid-turnaround editorial content. 

The Connecticut Mirror is hiring a Hartford-based investigative reporter to cover failed practices, unmet needs, gross misrepresentations, and corruption in state government. Candidates should have at least seven years of newsroom experience, experience using open records laws to obtain records and data, and a track record of reporting ambitious stories that create change. 

SOUTHEAST

Mississippi Today is hiring a state justice reporter. The reporter will work on shortform and longform stories about legislation, criminal and civil cases, civil liberties, and trends, as well as racial inequality issues in the state’s justice system. Applicants must be based in Mississippi. The deadline to apply is August 12. 

-The Mountain State Spotlight, a new journalism startup in West Virginia, is hiring a Charleston-based managing editor to lead the design and execution of their editorial strategy. Candidates should have at least seven years of local or regional news experience, including at least two years of experience as an editor.

CENTRAL 

-ABC57 is hiring a South Bend-based evening news anchor and investigative reporter. The reporter will be the third member of their evening anchor team and generate long- and short-term investigative news projects. Candidates should have at least two years of anchoring experience. 

-St. Louis Public Radio is hiring a reporter to identify relevant environment and science stories for the radio and web. Applicants should have at least two years of reporting experience, and previous public radio reporting is preferred. The salary range is $50,000-$62,000, depending on experience. The deadline to apply is August 27.

-Cincinnati Public Radio is hiring a radio news reporter to present short news stories and longer features on a variety of local issues. The reporter will share stories with Ohio Public Radio, Kentucky Public Radio, and NPR. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in radio as a host, reporter, or producer. 

Chalkbeat is hiring an Indianapolis-based reporter to cover public education in Indiana. Candidates should have some experience reporting on public policy issues or education and be passionate about the future of education in the state. 

-Gannett is hiring for multiple positions in central and northern Missouri, including a public safety reporter in Columbia; a news and sports reporter for the communities of Boonville, Mexico, and Moberly; and a news and sports reporter in Kirksville. Applications should have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Some reporting experience is preferred, but recent journalism graduates are welcome to apply.

Honolulu Civil Beat is hiring an investigative editor to help elevate the work of their small staff of reporters. They want a veteran journalist with at least a decade of experience who can motivate, mentor, and manage the newsroom. 

INTERNATIONAL

Vice UK is hiring a London-based executive editor for digital news. The editor will manage a team of editors and reporters and develop an overarching digital content strategy. Candidates should have senior journalism experience as a writer or story editor, and significant editing experience within a digital setting. 

OpenDemocracy is hiring a news and features editor to ensure that their headlines are sharp and copy is crisp and compelling. Candidates should have at least five years of experience working in editing or news production. The position can be based in their London office or be done remotely. 

Bloomberg News is hiring a Rio de Janeiro-based commodities reporter fluent in English and Portuguese to cover Brazil’s suppliers of raw materials, Vale and Petrobras. Candidates must have reporting experience in a breaking news environment and knowledge of the Brazilian economy, politics, financial markets, and business world.

The National is hiring for multiple positions in Abu Dhabi, UAE, including an Arab affairs editor, senior foreign writer, assistant foreign writer, breaking news reporter, video journalist, and social media journalist. All candidates should have a strong knowledge of Middle East affairs and experience working at a major English language news outlet. 

-LinkedIn India is hiring a Bangalore-based managing editor to lead their local news team and create content that matters to Indian professionals. Candidates should have at least a decade of experience in business news as a writer or editor, and four years of experience managing a team. 

REMOTE-FRIENDLY 

Game Informer is hiring three associate editors to produce written news, previews, reviews, and feature content for Game Informer, Game Informer Digital, and Game Informer Online. Candidates should have at least three years of experience writing and editing material for a magazine or other form of media, and must be able to travel domestically and internationally. 

The Counter is hiring a reporter to dive deep into the world of American food and agriculture. Candidates should have at least two years of reporting experience and “a sense of humor, appreciation for irony, and intellectual curiosity.” The position can be based in NYC or done remotely within the US. 

FiveThirtyEight is hiring a remote reporter to write about politics and elections with a particular focus on race. Candidates should have data fluency and at least three years of experience reporting on and writing about race and identity in America, but neither are required. 

FREELANCE AND TEMPORARY GIGS

Lifewire is hiring freelance reporters to cover technology news. They want reporters who can find unique, inclusive, and justice-centered angles in big technology stories. Rates are $300 for 750-1500 words. Writers should have at least five years of experience writing about consumer-facing technology in a news capacity. 

-NonDoc Media is hiring an Oklahoma City-based education reporter to focus on Oklahoma’s education system, specifically the challenges faced amid the pandemic. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in professional journalism. The initial contract is for nine months and pays $3,700 per month.

-Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting is hiring a temporary reporter to cover the economic impact and recovery from COVID-19 in southwestern Pennsylvania for the WESA radio station. Candidates should have at least three years of experience reporting in a professional newsroom environment, including some experience covering Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania. The full-time position will last for nine months and starts on September 1.

Honolulu Civil Beat is hiring contract reporters on Maui and the Big Island to help expand news coverage beyond Oahu. The reporters should be able to write at least two columns per month. 

-The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY is hiring a content writer. The writer can be based anywhere in the US and will be expected to write four articles per month for the Newmark J-school. The rate is $8,000 for the duration of a five-month contract that runs until the end of 2020. The deadline to apply is August 9.  

World Politics Review is hiring a writer to contribute the lead story for their weekly newsletter on China, China Note. The lead stories run 600-750 words and highlight major news developments in China. The payment is comparable to their daily Briefings, which pay $250. 

-Bloomberg is hiring part-time contract reporters based in Washington, DC to help cover the White House on nights and weekends. There is minimal experience necessary (they will teach you the gig), but they do require hustle and “lightning fingers.” Send inquiries to @aawayne or @MikeShepard4

-Beyond COVID is hiring a freelance online editor to help their audience navigate the debate on the post-COVID economy. The job requires working 20-37.5 hours per week and has a contract that ends on October 30 with a possibility for extension. The deadline to apply is August 6. 

Mic is hiring a remote culture writer to work three or four days per week. The job requires writing one or two analysis, commentary, or reported pieces on music, film, television, and social media. The rate is $20-30 per hour, depending on the person’s experience. Candidates should have at least three years of writing experience.  

gal-dem, a UK publication focused on women and non-binary POC, is hiring a remote opinions and personal essay editor for a six-month contract. The position requires a minimum of three years of journalism experience, and you must be eligible to work in the UK. The deadline to apply is August 14. 

PCMag is hiring a freelance weekend news writer to do three to four stories per day of 250-300 words each. Candidates should have experience writing consumer tech news for a digital publication. The deadline to apply is August 24.

INTERNSHIPS, GRANTS, AND FELLOWSHIPS

CNN is accepting applications for its paid digital internship in the UK. Interns will work alongside a team of dedicated and experienced journalists, attend regular editorial meetings, and participate in the editorial process. The internship runs from September 1 to December 31, and the deadline to apply is August 17.

-The Gerontological Society of America is accepting applications for their Journalists in Aging Fellows Program. The program provides a stipend of $1,500 to journalists who cover issues in aging or work for media outlets serving US communities. The stipend covers a training program, and fellows must commit to one short-term story and one long-term, in-depth project. The deadline to apply is September 1.

-ProPublica is accepting applications from journalists of color for its Emerging Reporters Program. The program provides a $9,000 stipend to five college students who work at, or want to work at, college journalism outlets. The deadline to apply is August 20.

-The Democracy Fund is accepting applications for internships in its Public Square Program. The program supports institutions that help people better understand and participate in the democratic process. The preferred minimum commitment is 28 hours per week for approximately 9 months, and the rate is $21 per hour for undergraduate interns and $25 per hour for graduate-level interns. While this position will initially work remotely, there is a chance it could transition to their Washington, DC office in the future.

The Daily Beast is accepting applications for New York-based interns who will join the Cheat Sheet and breaking news team full-time in the fall. Candidates should have some experience writing breaking news from a previous internship or campus publication. The internship is paid, and the deadline to apply is August 5.

-American Public Media is accepting applications for its Fall 2020 internship in St. Paul, Minnesota. The interns will work for APM Reports, the investigations and documentary unit of American Public Media. The internship is full-time, pays $15 per hour, and will run from September 14 to December 18. The deadline to apply is August 7.

I Am New Generation Magazine is looking to commission journalists interested in writing about business, startups, tech, current affairs, and health-related topics. Send inquiries to [email protected]

Audubon, the editorial publication of the National Audubon Society, is accepting applications for its fall internship. Applicants must have a basic level of comfort with science and be willing to cover conservation news and environmental and social justice. The internship is remote, paid, and applicants can work up to 35 hours per week from September to December. 

-In These Times is accepting applications for their investigative reporting fund. They are interested in investigative stories that expose wrongdoing and examine systemic racism, corporate capture of government, labor practices, native issues, and militarism. The grant is $1 per word for 3,000-4,500 words and covers reporting expenses. Send questions and applications to [email protected] by August 10.

-The National Association of Science Writers is accepting applications from science writers for their diversity reporting grants. They want proposals that focus on how a science or health-related issue is affecting marginalized communities. Five grants of $1,000 each will be awarded. The deadline to apply is August 15.

-The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for remote visiting fellowships on journalism topics related to racism and public health. The fellowship provides research opportunities and specialized training to individuals. The fellowship provides a weekly stipend of $2,000, which is paid out monthly. The deadline to apply is September 25, but they may begin selecting fellows prior to the deadline. 

-The Alicia Patterson Foundation is accepting applications for the Alicia Patterson fellowship. The fellowship is only open to US citizens who are full-time print journalists or photographers, or to non-US citizens who work full-time for US print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are also welcome to apply. Fellows can receive $40,000 for the full-year stipend and $20,000 for the six-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is October 1.

EVENTS

-The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is conducting a free webinar on August 13 to share tips on how to use Google tools like Scholar, Alerts, and Trends for freelance journalism. The webinar will run from 3-4:30 pm EST and be conducted by freelance journalist Benet Wilson.

-Poynter is conducting a free, self-directed online course on journalism and trauma in partnership with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. The course focuses on how traumatic stress affects victims, how to interview trauma victims with compassion and respect, and how to take care of your own health after covering a traumatic event.

Briarpatch Magazine is looking for pitches from BIPOC about the Canadian North for their Northern Writing Prize. The prize offers $600 CAD (about $445) for a feature article, photo essay, or graphic narrative that examines the politics, culture, environmental issues, or activism present in Canada’s North. -The Fashion and Race Database is looking for pitches from BIPOC writers for essays, opinion pieces, short profiles for their Objects That Matter series, or profiles of significant BIPOC fashion figures.
