FREELANCE AND TEMPORARY GIGS
-The Philadelphia Obituary Project is hiring at least one journalist to contribute up to twice a month to the website. Journalists will continue the nonprofit’s mission to honor the lives of homicide victims and bring more attention to unsolved cases. Candidates should live in the Philadelphia area, preferably the city, and be passionate about community journalism.
–Australian Geographic is hiring an Australia-based bird columnist to profile the country’s birdlife, especially the lesser known or embattled species, and science and technology news regarding bird conservation. Candidates must have a background in science writing. The rate is $200 for 400-500 word posts.
–Texas Monthly is hiring a temporary assistant digital editor to help assign and edit web stories with a focus on lifestyle and culture. The editor will work 30 to 40 hours per week until the end of December 2020, with the potential for an extended contract or freelance work. The position is remote until it is safe to return to the office in Austin.
–Sportsnaut is hiring contributors to cover teams in the NFL, MLB, college football, and the NBA. Contributors will write at least twice a week for the site and may also help with social media promotion, copy editing, or other site duties. Rates vary based on experience.
–Nature is hiring a temporary assistant editor to help commission and edit opinion pieces. The contract is for six months, and the editor can be based in London, Shanghai, New York, or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply is September 10.
-Poynter is hiring a reporter for a six-month period to write one or two articles per week covering the media. The rate is $576 per week for 26 weeks. Candidates must be based in the US. The deadline to apply is September 11.
-The Energy News Network is hiring a writer for their daily Southeast Energy News email newsletter. Candidates should be located in the Southeast or have direct knowledge of the region. The contract pays $2,500 per month and “the workload is typically two hours per day but may take longer at first.” The deadline to apply is September 25.
INTERNSHIPS
-Vermont Public Radio is accepting applications for its Vermont Edition internship. The intern will pitch and develop show topics and produce their own segments. The rate is $12 per hour, and interns are expected to work 12 hours per week. The deadline to apply for the internship is September 14.
-The Washington Post is accepting applications for its Summer 2021 internship program. Interns can choose from a variety of positions, including reporting, visual journalism, multiplatform editing, audio production, and more. The deadline to apply is October 7.
–The Oregonian is accepting applications for its paid, 10-week summer internship in Portland. Interns will be part of the news team and have their work showcased online and in print. There is also a three-month Crime and Public Safety News Reporting Fellowship for post-graduate reporters. The fellowship pays $15 per hour and fellows are expected to work 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply for both programs is October 14.
–The Baltimore Sun is accepting applications for its paid Summer 2021 Mary J. Corey Journalism Internship. Candidates should have extensive journalism experience, either as a student journalist or as an intern in a professional newsroom. Interns will be paid $575 per week and receive a $1,000 housing stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15.
-The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its US Reporting internship for Summer 2021. The 10-week paid internship program can be based in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Washington, DC. Interns are paid $900 per week. The deadline to apply is October 30.
-The Austin American-Statesman is accepting applications for their Austin-based spring and summer internships. The spring internship pays $8 per hour for up to 180 hours per semester, while the summer internship pays $450 per week for 11 weeks. The deadline to apply for both programs is October 31.
–The Boston Globe is accepting applications for their summer internship. Most interns will work as general assignment reporters in the news department, but others will be hired for the sports, living and art, and business departments. The internship is full-time for twelve weeks and pays a weekly wage. The deadline to apply is November 1.
–The Tampa Bay Times is accepting applications for their summer internship. Interns will work as news reporters, sports reporters, photographers, copy editors, or engagement producers. The internship pays $500 per week, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 1.
–The American Prospect is accepting applications for its winter-spring internship. Interns will assist with research, fact-checking, and social media, and contribute editorially. The internship can be done full- or part-time, offers a stipend of $70 per day, and can be done remotely or at their office in DC when they open again. The deadline to apply is November 30.
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
-Awesemo.com is accepting applications for its Diversity in Sports Media Scholarship. The scholarship awards $5,000 to students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds who want to pursue further education in sports media.
-The Fund for Investigative Journalism is accepting applications from journalists who want to work on investigative stories that uncover wrongdoing in the public and private sectors. Grants average $5,000, but can go as high as $10,000 to cover expenses and small stipends. Non-US story proposals are accepted, but must come from US-based reporters; have a strong US angle involving American citizens, government or business; and must be published in a US media outlet in English. The deadline to apply is September 14.
-Investigate Europe is accepting applications for a research grant to a journalist who can work with the team on their next investigation. Candidates should preferably have a background in economic and political journalism. The monthly grant is €1,500 and lasts three months. The deadline to apply is September 20.
-The Committee to Protect Journalists is accepting applications for their US Press Freedom Accountability Project. The initiative provides grants that range from $2,000-$5,000 for newsrooms reporting on threats to journalists in the US, with priority given to pieces that can be published in one to three months. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis, and grants will be awarded starting October 1.
FELLOWSHIPS
-ACES: The Society for Editing is accepting applications for its Richard S. Holden Diversity Fellowship in collaboration with the Dow Jones News Fund. The fellowship awards up to $3,000 to help fellows enroll in established training programs, attend seminars and conferences, or pursue other activities aimed at advancing their careers. The deadline to apply is September 15.
–The Boston Globe is accepting applications for its Spotlight Investigative Journalism Fellowship. The fellowship awards up to $100,000 to work on in-depth research and reporting projects. Fellows this year can be individual freelance reporters or newsrooms and multi-reporter teams. The deadline to apply is September 24.
-The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for remote visiting fellowships on journalism topics related to racism and public health. The fellowship provides research opportunities and specialized training to individuals. The fellowship provides a weekly stipend of $2,000, which is paid out monthly. The deadline to apply is September 25, but they may begin selecting fellows prior to the deadline.
-The Alicia Patterson Foundation is accepting applications for the Alicia Patterson fellowship. The fellowship is only open to US citizens who are full-time print journalists or photographers, or to non-US citizens who work full-time for US print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are also welcome to apply. Fellows can receive $40,000 for the full-year fellowship and $20,000 for the six-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is October 1.
–The Texas Tribune is accepting applications for its paid 2021 fellowships in Austin. Fellows can focus on data visuals, engagement, engineering, events, marketing and communications, multimedia, photography, and reporting. There is also a reporting fellowship in Washington, DC. The deadline for the spring 2021 program is October 2. The deadline for the summer 2021 program is October 30.
-WBUR is accepting applications for its yearlong, Boston-based Newsroom Fellowship. Fellows will be embedded in different parts of the newsroom every three months to learn about newscasts, live broadcast, digital media, and reporting. The salary for the fellowship is $50,000. The deadline to apply is October 9.
-Investigative Reporters and Editors is accepting applications for their Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship. The yearlong program is open to US journalists of color with at least three years of post-college work experience. The deadline to apply is October 12.
–The Economist is accepting applications for two paid fellowships. The fellows will spend six months writing articles about politics and policy in the US. The fellow can be based in their New York or Washington, DC office, and the monthly remuneration is about $3,000. The deadline to apply is October 30.
-Noor Images is accepting applications for its one-year Stanley Greene Legacy Prize and Fellowship. The fellowship aims to support the work and professional aspirations of underrepresented photojournalists from the US. Fellows will receive training, grant-writing support, a $10,000 fellowship prize, and be compensated for travel expenses for field reporting or research up to $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 1.
EVENTS
-A Culture of Safety Alliance is conducting two free training courses for freelance journalists. The Civil Unrest and First Aid online safety training course is for journalists covering protests in the US and takes approximately four hours to complete. The Freelance Safety Clinics are for freelance photojournalists or documentary photographers who want one-on-one advice from experts. For both events, they are particularly interested in reaching women and journalists, photographers, and filmmakers of color.
-The Canadian Journalism Foundation is hosting a free panel on September 24 on biases in coverage of BIPOC. The panelists include Nana aba Duncan, host of CBC Radio One’s Podcast Playlist and Fresh Air; Quartz reporter Karen K. Ho; and CVC Vancouver journalist Angela Sterritt.
-Tim Herrera is hosting a free panel on September 20 on what it’s like to be an investigative journalist. The panel will include Washington Post reporter Nicole Dungca, The Tampa Bay Times reporter Adam Playford, and freelance journalist Jack Herrera.
CALLS FOR PITCHES
–The Verge is looking for pitches for a special project on how small businesses are adapting to issues like the quarantine, tech platform changes, and the climate. Rates will be flat, but will work out to roughly $1 per word. Send pitches by September 11 to [email protected] and be prepared to file by September 17.
–The New York Times is looking for pitches for their Modern Love and Tiny Love Stories sections. They especially encourage BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and non-US writers to submit.
–Are We Europe is looking for pitches from indigenous communities and stories about the effects of colonialism in South America for their next issue. Rates range from €100-€150 (about $117-$176) for just text and €200-€300 (about $235-$353) for multimedia stories, but this could increase depending on funding. -Outside/In Radio, a podcast about the natural world, is looking for pitches.
