US News and World Report is looking to commission freelancers for pieces on tech, home products, insurance, and other key services. Freelancers will be paid per piece but “rates average around $0.25 per word” for at least 1,000 words. The New Republic is looking to commission a writer with experience covering “the nitty gritty of climate policy” for a timely story. Send inquiries to [email protected]

Compost Magazine is looking for pitches of personal essays, interviews, poems, and fiction and non-fiction pieces on “how [Internet decay] can help new networks flourish.” They ask that, in addition to the time spent on your piece, you also contribute about six hours to the magazine before it launches. The rate is $300 for participation in the development of the magazine plus $300-$800 for the creative work you produce. See their pitch guide for more information and send pitches by December 8.

OneVillage, a new platform connecting cancer patients, is looking for pitches from writers who have experience with cancer. The rate will range from $100-$200 per piece, but according to their tweet, they are “still determining the exact amount.” Send pitches to [email protected].

Science for the People is looking for pitches on environmental racism, the impact of the climate crisis and COVID-19 on BIPOC communities, and more for their spring 2021 issue. The rates are $100 for short pieces of 600-1,000 words, $200 for pieces of 1,200-1,500 words, and $250 for feature-length stories of at least 2,000 words. Inuit Art Quarterly is looking for pitches for their next two issues, themed around Storytelling and Interiors. The rate is $1,250 CAD (about $940 USD) for features and $250 CAD (about $185 USD) for reviews and smaller pieces. Please send pitches to [email protected] by December 31 for Interiors. 

FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS

Eater is hiring a part-time editor to oversee its Philadelphia city site, Eater Philly. Candidates should have a love for restaurants, knowledge of the local dining scene, and some experience in journalism — particularly with breaking daily news, developing sources, covering a beat, and editing copy.

The White Review is hiring an editor to outline a new editorial direction for the magazine. The editorship will be on a fixed, two-year term working three days a week, and is open to individual and joint applications. For individual applicants, the position will pay £25,000 pro-rata (about $32,870), while group applications will need to submit a proposal that details how responsibilities and the salary will be shared. The deadline to apply is November 26.

The New York Times is hiring a temporary managing editor for their T Brand branded content team. Candidates should have at least a decade of experience in media or publishing, and have firsthand experience running a newsroom.

Foreign Policy is hiring for multiple part-time positions, including a Latin America newsletter writer and an Africa newsletter writer. Candidates should have some experience reporting from around the respective regions and be able to explain regional trends in politics, economics, culture, and technology to a global audience. 

-Future PLC is hiring a UK-based trainee news writer on a one-year contract. The writer will produce content for brands that include TechRadar, T3, Tom’s Guide, PCGamer, and Games Radar. Candidates do not need any prior experience, but should have a passion for technology or gaming. 

EVENTS

-The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting a free course on online privacy that runs from November 16 to December 13. “Online Harassment: Strategies for Journalists’ Defense” is a four-week course that teaches journalists how to better protect themselves from online harassment. 

GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS

El Tímpano is accepting applications for its paid, Bay Area-based Health and Housing Reporting Fellowship. Fellows will report on the impact of COVID-19 on overcrowded housing in Oakland’s Latinx and Mayan immigrant communities. The fellowship pays a $1,000 monthly stipend for six months, and fellows will be expected to work at least eight hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 16.

Insider is accepting applications for its paid, remote fellowship program. Fellows will write about celebrity news and music, and candidates should have some experience reporting and writing. The fellowship pays $18 per hour and requires 40 hours of work per week for six months. 

-Election SOS is accepting applications for its Rapid Response Fund. The fund offers newsrooms and freelance journalists grants that range from $500-$10,000 to help meet emergent needs of journalists covering the 2020 US election. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until funds run out. 

-The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute is accepting applications for its 2021 fellowship program. This year’s fellowship projects address the increasing challenges in covering climate change, unpublishing, harassment of marginalized journalists, and other topics. Fellows who choose to work from their headquarters in Columbia, Missouri will receive an $80,000 stipend. Fellows who work from any location around the world or within a US newsroom will receive a $20,000 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 18.

Harpers Bazaar is accepting applications for its paid six-month and one-year editorial fellowships. Fellows will cover fashion, beauty, politics, culture, and celebrity news, with an emphasis on the royal family. The fellowship pays $15 per hour and requires 40 hours of work per week. The program will begin remotely in December. 

The New York Times is accepting applications to its fellowship program in New York. Fellows can apply to work in a variety of roles, including reporting; photography; arts criticism; data reporting on the Upshot team; editing for the Op-Ed section; editing their digital news designs; editorial design for print; and investigative reporting for their Video department. The deadline to apply for all roles is December 9.

The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its paid art criticism fellowship. Fellows will work in the Arts in Review section commissioning reviews, researching, fact-checking, and editing content. The internship lasts 10 weeks and may be remote if it is not safe to return to their New York offices by June. The deadline to apply is December 13. 

The New York Times is accepting applications for its London-based fellowship program. Fellows will cover breaking news in the UK and Europe to build the skills necessary to be a foreign correspondent. Candidates should have some journalism experience, as well as an interest in international reporting. Applicants from around the world are welcome to apply, but fellows must be eligible to work in the UK.

Grist is accepting applications for their paid spring 2021 fellowship program. Applicants can choose between two programs: news and politics or environmental justice. Both fellowships pay $3,334 per month for six months and are eligible for health benefit coverage. Fellows can be based anywhere in the US or at Grist’s hubs in Seattle or New York when it is safe to do so. The deadline to apply is November 16.

Business Insider is accepting applications for several paid, US-based fellowships. Fellows can work for their buying guide team, markets team, home and kitchen review team, personal finance review team, editorial partnerships team, subscription strategy team, and freelance health editorial team. All fellowships are full-time and remote. The program lasts for six months and pays $18 per hour. The deadline to apply to the editorial partnerships, subscription strategy, home and kitchen review, and personal finance review fellowships is November 30. 

Politico is accepting applications for its paid, yearlong fellowship program in Washington, DC. Fellows will work with teams across their newsroom covering the White House, Congress, state capitals, and policy issues. Candidates should have at least two years of newsroom experience related to policy, analysis, or journalism. The total compensation is $60,000 plus benefits. The deadline to apply is November 30.

-Noor Images is accepting applications for its one-year Stanley Greene Legacy Prize and Fellowship. The fellowship aims to support the work and professional aspirations of underrepresented photojournalists from the US. Fellows will receive training, grant-writing support, a $10,000 fellowship prize, and be compensated for travel expenses for field reporting or research up to $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 1.

-The American Political Science Association is accepting applications for its nine-month Congressional Fellowship for Journalists. Fellows will serve on a congressional staff to gain hands-on experience in Congress. The fellowship pays a stipend of $54,000 plus a travel allowance. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in writing, reporting, editing, producing, or directing. The deadline to apply is December 16.

-NPR is accepting applications for their one-year, DC-based Kroc Fellowship. Fellows will receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing, and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates, but previous journalism experience is not required. Fellows are paid a stipend of more than $45,000 and receive benefits, including a paid vacation. Applications are accepted from October 15 to December 31. 

INTERNSHIPS

Catapult is accepting applications for its paid, remote spring internship. Interns will do social media research, draft pitches, compose press releases, and research and gather media lists. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is November 13. 

Audubon Magazine is accepting applications for its paid, remote winter internship. Interns will pitch and write articles for print and web, and assist with research, story development, and fact checking. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work up to 35 hours per week for 16 weeks.

-The Emma Bowen Foundation is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program for students of color. Interns in the content track will learn about production, social media, digital media, and broadcast and online journalism. There is no set deadline to apply, but they recommend that students apply as soon as possible. 

-KQED is accepting applications for their paid arts and culture editorial internship. Interns will report and write weekly event picks, news briefs, and shorter breaking stories. They will also be strongly encouraged to file at least one in-depth, feature length story. They don’t list geographic requirements, but they want someone with “deep knowledge of the Bay Area arts scene.”

The Virginian-Pilot is accepting applications for its summer 2021 internship program. Interns can focus on reporting, audience engagement, data journalism, or videography and photography. The deadline to apply is November 13.

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program. Interns can apply for programs in a number of fields, including photojournalism, business, sports reporting, copy editing, investigative journalism, features, and metro reporting. Interns must be students residing in either Washington or Oregon. Interns will be paid $16.39 per hour, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 13.

-The Los Angeles Times is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program. Interns will have the opportunity to work in all newsroom departments, including sports, politics, business, fashion, food, foreign, national, metro, local, arts, entertainment, and more. Interns will be paid $17.50 per hour, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 15.

The News & Observer is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship in Raleigh, NC. Interns are assigned an editor and mentor, and they will write stories, shoot photos and videos, and create social media content. Interns will be paid $500 per week, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 30.

The New York Times is accepting applications for their free Student Journalism Institute. The intensive short-term program is for people who are either college students at a historically Black colleges or universities or college students who are also members of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), or the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA). The program will be hosted virtually so that anyone from around the US can participate. The deadline to apply is December 7.

High Country News is accepting applications for its paid internship program. Interns will develop, report, and write two articles per month about the Western United States, and interns will work with editors to learn how to perform interviews, frame a story, and more. The internship pays a $600 bi-weekly stipend for interns working remotely from within the Western United States; an additional $125 bi-weekly work-from-home allowance; and a one-time signing bonus of $500 to help with IT equipment. Interns can be based anywhere in the Western region of the US. The deadline to apply for the summer internship is March 15.

NEW YORK

The New Republic is hiring a politics writer with expertise in political analysis, reporting, and opinion. Candidates should have at least three years of experience, as well as a track record of promoting their work on social media, newsletters, and other channels. The position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.

The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including an editorial assistant for two Opinion columnists and a deputy editor to manage their Opinion video team. Candidates for the editorial assistant positions should have at least one year of experience in journalism, research, and fact-checking. Candidates for the deputy editor position should have at least a decade of significant journalistic news experience.  

-Vox Media is hiring a branded content editor for their Vox Creative studio. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in branded content writing, copywriting, editorial writing, or a related field, and experience in beauty, fashion, CPG, travel, finance, or health is preferred but not required. The Wall Street Journal is hiring a graphics reporter to create news graphics, interactive stories, and data visualizations. Candidates should have prior experience in a newsroom, a good understanding of business news, and experience with visual journalism.

The New Yorker is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior digital photo editor and a fact checker. Candidates for the senior digital photo editor positions should have at least four years of experience producing photo shoots. Candidates for the fact checker position should have a strong understanding of ethical reporting standards and practices. 

GQ is hiring a staff writer to contribute to their Sports vertical. Candidates should have some experience pitching and writing sports-adjacent coverage, and specific experience reporting on the NFL and NBA is a plus.

Morning Brew is hiring a writer to join their Retail Brew team. Candidates should have at least two years of professional writing experience working in or around B2B retail, and a deep interest and expertise in business writing. The position is currently remote but will be based in New York when it is safe to do so.

-Meredith Corporation is hiring a senior editor to produce commerce content related to fashion, beauty, home, travel, tech, food, and entertainment. Candidates should have at least five years of experience as a writer and editor for an online publisher. 

Pitchfork is hiring a special projects editor to work with audience development, commerce, and consumer revenue partners on brand projects. Candidates should have experience editing across a wide range of writing styles and be well-versed in music media. 

Insider is hiring a reporter to work with their digital culture team covering internet trends, influencers, internet subcultures, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and other topics. Candidates should have some journalism experience and an interest in influencers and online culture.

Tom’s Guide is hiring for multiple positions, including a news editor, a deputy editor, and a finance editor. Candidates for all positions should have experience editing or writing consumer product news, and a strong understanding of technology and consumer products.

Consumer Reports is hiring a staff writer for their Home and Appliance team. Candidates should have a genuine interest in a variety of topics related to the home and should have experience in writing, reporting, and editing. 

Jewish Insider is hiring a reporter to “tap into and drive the daily conversation in the Jewish philanthropic world.” Candidates should have some prior journalism and writing experience. The position can be done remotely, but living in New York is preferred.

The Markup is hiring for multiple positions, including a labor reporter to cover the effects of technology on the labor force and a privacy reporter to cover the erosion of privacy in “just about every aspect of our lives.” The deadline to apply for both positions is November 15.

WASHINGTON, DC

The New Republic is hiring a politics writer with expertise in political analysis, reporting, and opinion. Candidates should have at least three years of experience, as well as a track record of promoting their work on social media, newsletters, and other channels. The position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.

Politico is hiring a reporter to cover the White House. Candidates should have experience covering politics or policy, a deep understanding of government, and a demonstrated ability to write across a variety of story forms. 

Axios is hiring a senior associate editor to manage a group of entry-level reporters. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in news and the evolution of the media industry, and editing experience on a breaking news desk. 

Inside Higher Ed is hiring a senior editor to oversee a small team of reporters. Candidates should have at least five years of professional experience, and a deep interest in the important issues facing the higher education system in the US.

-ProPublica is hiring an investigative reporter to cover healthcare. Candidates should have a track record of aggressive reporting on government, but previous investigative reporting experience is not necessary. The deadline to apply is November 22.

CALIFORNIA 

CapRadio is hiring a Sacramento-based reporter to cover Northern California. The reporter will produce content for the radio and the web. Candidates should have some journalism experience, but it is not required.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring for multiple positions, including an investigative reporter and a quick strike reporter who can produce quick-turnaround investigations. Candidates for the investigative reporter position should have at least five years of reporting experience. Candidates for the quick strike reporter position should know how to quickly background an individual or company using online criminal and civil court dockets. 

The Albany Business Review is hiring an associate editor to produce special reports and package print content for the web. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting or editing experience, and experience managing editorial projects.

SOUTHEAST

WLRN News is hiring a Miami-based producer to oversee their regularly scheduled newscasts and their weekly public affairs program, The South Florida Roundup. Candidates should have at least three years of professional experience and a deep knowledge of South Florida news, issues, and culture.

-McClatchy is hiring a deputy regional sports editor to collaborate with sports editors and reporters across their Southeast regional newsrooms. The primary focus will be coordinating high school sports coverage, but will also include professional and college sports coverage. The position can be based at The News and Observer in Raleigh or at The Observer in Charlotte. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are open in Rockingham and Myrtle Beach

CENTRAL

The Chicago Sun-Times is hiring an audience engagement specialist to curate the homepage and section pages of their site, and identify trending and breaking news. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in digital news.

-PBS Wisconsin is hiring a Madison-based multimedia journalist to produce news, with a strong focus on racial and social justice reporting. Candidates should have at least three years of broadcast or professional online video reporting experience, and at least two years of experience reporting on racial and social justice issues.

NORTHWEST

The Seattle Times is hiring an assistant metro editor for their morning team. The editor will identify stories that locals will want to read as they start their day. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in a newsroom, and prior management experience is a plus.  

-Oregon Public Broadcasting is hiring a producer for their daily news and discussion program, Think Out Loud. Candidates should have at least one year of experience in a daily newsroom environment and be able to work some evenings and weekends. The deadline to apply is November 13. 

Jackson Hole Community Radio is hiring a news director to oversee their daily newscast; report radio spots, in-depth features, and web stories; and produce interviews and podcasts. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience and be prepared to provide mentorship to reporters.

REMOTE-FRIENDLY

The New York Times is hiring a staff writer for their Wirecutter vertical. Candidates should have at least two years of professional writing experience and familiarity with the home goods industry. The position can be based out of their offices in New York or LA, but working remotely is preferred.

Jewish Insider is hiring a reporter to “tap into and drive the daily conversation in the Jewish philanthropic world.” Candidates should have some prior journalism and writing experience. The position can be done remotely, but living in New York is preferred.

Morning Brew is hiring a writer to join their Retail Brew team.
