FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–The New York Times is hiring a part-time copy editor for its New York Times Editing Center. Candidates should have at least three years of experience as an editor for a professional publication and a willingness to work a flexible schedule.
–Gumbo Media is hiring writers based in Albuquerque, Austin, Memphis, Minneapolis, Rochester, and St. Paul for a project on their city’s histories of racial inequities. The project will last at least three months and pay at least $1,000. The deadline to apply is January 1.
–Inverse is hiring a New York-based editor to work on their slide-based “card stories” for the web. Candidates should have at least two years of digital publishing experience and be able to produce 10-14 card stories per week. The job pays $28 per hour, and the editor must be able to work 24 hours per week.
–Austonia is hiring an Austin-based breaking news writer on a freelance contract. Candidates should have at least one professional media internship, previous journalism experience, and extensive knowledge of the city. The writer will be required to work from 8 AM to 2 PM from Monday to Friday.
-Youth Communication is hiring a part-time editor to work with teen writers on stories and co-teach their six-week writing workshop. Candidates should have at least five years of writing and editing experience, and a “personal awareness about how their own racial identity influences how and why they do this work.” The position can be based in New York or be done remotely.
–Influence Group is hiring freelance writers to cover real estate and facility management for their blog. Candidates should have some experience publishing B2B content, and have some knowledge of architecture, design, construction, operations, and engineering. The rates range from $150-$200 for 800-1,200 words.
EVENTS
-Study Hall member Ruth Terry is hosting a talk about pitching on December 14. She will talk about how she cold-pitched her way into The New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME, and other publications. You can send questions about pitching to [email protected] and she will answer as many as she can during the call. If you can’t attend, you can still sign up and receive a video recording of the call after the event.
-Poynter is hosting a webinar on how to cover the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines in local communities on December 14. The online training course will feature the president of the American Medical Association and other immunology experts. The course is being offered for free, but has a suggested donation of $15 if you have the financial means.
-Hearst Connecticut Media is hosting a virtual career fair on December 10. The fair will offer an overview of what it’s like to work at Connecticut’s largest news organization. They also offer informational interviews with some of the group’s editors to discuss multiple open positions in reporting and editing.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND FELLOWSHIPS
-The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is accepting applications for its paid fact-checking fellowship in collaboration with the Facebook Journalism Project. Fellows will be assigned to newsrooms across the US, including PolitiFact, AP, Reuters, USA TODAY, and others. The fellowship lasts for one year, and fellows are expected to work full-time. The deadline to apply is December 31.
-The Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is accepting applications for its full-tuition scholarship in collaboration with the NABJ. The scholarship will be awarded to a member of the NABJ who enrolls in their Fall 2021 program. Candidates should preferably be interested in finance, business, or political reporting.
–Outside Magazine is accepting applications for their paid fellowship program. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with editors in editorial, production, and video production work. The fellowship pays $15 per hour (and time-and-a-half for any overtime hours), and fellows are expected to work around 40 hours per week for six months. The fellowship can be based in their Santa Fe newsroom or be done remotely from California, Illinois, New York, or Colorado. The deadline to apply is January 8.
–Business Insider is accepting applications for its New York-based summer 2021 fellowship program. Fellows will choose from a variety of beats to focus on, including finance, investing, transportation, healthcare, energy, business, and gaming-focused influencers and esports, or fellows can work for their market data site, Markets Insider. They are also accepting applications for a San Francisco-based fellowship covering technology startups and tech investors. All fellowship programs are paid and require that you work 30 hours per week for six months.
–Marie Claire is accepting applications for its paid 2021 fellowship program. Fellows will start in January and work from Monday to Friday for six months. There is “lots of writing involved,” and the fellowship is remote-friendly. Send inquiries and clips to [email protected].
-Narratively is accepting applications for their fellowship program in collaboration with the NABJ. Fellows will work with the editorial team to produce content for their online publication and production studio. The fellowship pays a $2,000 stipend, and fellows are expected to work 10 hours per week. Candidates must be NABJ student members. The deadline to apply is December 12.
–The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its paid art criticism fellowship. Fellows will work in the Arts in Review section commissioning reviews, researching, fact-checking, and editing content. The fellowship lasts 10 weeks and may be remote if it is not safe to return to their New York offices by June. The deadline to apply is December 13.
–High Country News is accepting applications for its climate justice fellowship. Applicants should be print or visual journalists based in the Western United States who are interested in reporting on climate change and environmental justice within the region. Journalists will produce reported stories, analysis pieces, and essays, and visual journalists will produce photo essays, multimedia projects, and videos. Fellows will be paid a $1,187.25 stipend on a bi-weekly basis, which includes a work-from-home allowance. The deadline to apply is December 14.
–Insider, Inc is accepting applications for their fellowship program in collaboration with the NABJ. Fellows will report, write, and edit stories across one of their dozens of beats. Candidates should have some reporting and writing experience. The fellowship pays $18 per hour, and fellows are expected to work around 40 hours per week for six months. Fellows will also receive an additional monthly $1,000 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 14.
-The American Political Science Association is accepting applications for its nine-month Congressional Fellowship for Journalists. Fellows will serve on a congressional staff to gain hands-on experience in Congress. The fellowship pays a stipend of $54,000 plus a travel allowance. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in writing, reporting, editing, producing, or directing. The deadline to apply is December 16.
-The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute is accepting applications for its 2021 fellowship program. This year’s fellowship projects address the increasing challenges in covering climate change, unpublishing, harassment of marginalized journalists, and other topics. Fellows who choose to work from their headquarters in Columbia, Missouri will receive an $80,000 stipend. Fellows who work from any location around the world or within a US newsroom will receive a $20,000 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 18.
-NPR is accepting applications for their one-year, DC-based Kroc Fellowship. Fellows will receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing, and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates, but previous journalism experience is not required. Fellows are paid a stipend of more than $45,000 and receive benefits, including a paid vacation. Applications are accepted from October 15 to December 31.
-The Sidney Hillman Foundation is accepting applications for its 2021 Hillman Prizes for Journalism. The prize honors excellence in investigative journalism and commentary. Entries must have been published or broadcast in 2020 and been made widely available in the US. Hillman Prize winners will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium. The deadline to apply is January 30.
INTERNSHIPS
–Forbes is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program in Jersey City. Interns will work with an editor to cover business, education, innovation, lifestyle, money, or several other beats throughout the summer. The internship lasts for 10-12 weeks, and interns are expected to work around 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply is December 14.
–Audubon Magazine is accepting applications for its paid, remote winter 2021 internship. Interns will pitch and write articles for print and web, and assist with research, story development, and fact-checking. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work up to 35 hours per week for 16 weeks.
-The Emma Bowen Foundation is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program for students of color. Interns in the content track will learn about production, social media, digital media, and broadcast and online journalism. There is no set deadline to apply, but they recommend that students apply as soon as possible.
-The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association is accepting applications for their paid internship program. Interns will assist reporters from various news organizations at the state Capitol in Harrisburg from mid-May to late July or early August. The internship pays $575 per week, and interns are expected to work five days per week. The deadline to apply is February 1.
–High Country News is accepting applications for its paid internship program. Interns will develop, report, and write two articles per month about the Western United States, and will work with editors to learn how to perform interviews, frame a story, and more. The internship pays a $600 bi-weekly stipend for interns working remotely from within the Western United States; an additional $125 bi-weekly work-from-home allowance; and a one-time signing bonus of $500 to help with IT equipment. Interns can be based anywhere in the Western region of the US. The deadline to apply for the summer internship is March 15.

–The New York Times is hiring a staff editor to fact-check Ezra Klein’s new, twice-weekly podcast and weekly opinion column, as well as other shows as needed. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in journalism, including experience editing, conducting research, and fact-checking.
–NBC News Digital is hiring a reporter to expand their commerce content and shopping recommendations. Candidates should have at least two years of editorial experience, and previous commerce experience is preferred.
–HuffPost is hiring an editor-in-chief to lead its US newsroom. Candidates should have a deep understanding of politics, and a demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, covering issues of race and multiculturalism. The position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.
–The Information is hiring a reporter to cover how tech companies interact with Wall Street. Candidates should have a proven track record of breaking news and know how to read financial statements. The position can be based in New York or San Francisco.
–Bon Appétit is hiring an assistant editor to work on digital and print content, with an emphasis on the print magazine. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience, and while food expertise is not a prerequisite, an interest in food is “a must.”
–Consumer Reports is hiring a writer to cover shopping tips, trends, and deals. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting and writing experience, and a strong knowledge of retail trends in the home and technology markets.
–Insider, Inc is hiring an editor to run their new Voices of Color editorial team. Candidates should have excellent editing and storytelling skills, and deep knowledge of issues related to ethnicity, race, bias, and inclusion in the US and internationally. The position will be remote until they return to their office in July 2021.
–Business Insider is hiring for multiple positions, including a reporter to cover the lives of the world’s richest people, an associate editor to lead their US markets team, a correspondent to cover the grocery business, a reporter to grow their Markets Insider site, and a senior reporter to cover investment advice. All positions will be remote until they return to their office in July 2021.
–Markets Insider is hiring an associate editor to lead their freelance content initiative. Candidates should have at least two years of editorial experience, and experience developing a freelance network is preferred.
–Barron’s is hiring a story editor for its website and magazine. Candidates should have some experience editing at a major publication and have a working knowledge of issues related to finance, markets, and business.
–MarketWatch is hiring a reporter to explain complex market analysis in daily columns, news posts, and deep dives. Candidates should have a working understanding of currencies, stock and bond markets, and other assets.
–The Staten Island Advance is hiring a reporter to cover City Hall, the mayor, and politics through a Staten Island lens. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience, and a knowledge of Staten Island’s issues, key players, and geography is preferred.
WASHINGTON, DC
-The Washington Post is hiring for multiple positions, including a copy editor and a TV critic to “make sense of what we see on our screens every day.” The copy editor will be required to work from 2:30 PM to 10 PM, but may need to work as late as 2 AM on big news nights. The deadline to apply for the TV critic position is December 18, and is December 19 for the copy editor position.
–NPR is hiring a supervising planning editor to lead their Morning Edition team. Candidates should have at least a decade of journalism experience and two years of management experience, with knowledge of the public radio system preferred.
–Politico is hiring an editor to lead their healthcare team. Candidates should have some experience managing large teams of reporters and editors, and must have a track record of covering government, business, and economics.
–MarketWatch is hiring a bureau chief to lead their coverage of politics, policy, finance, and economics. Candidates should have at least seven years of experience covering Washington and be well-sourced inside the Beltway.
–STAT is hiring a correspondent to join their Washington bureau. Candidates should have some experience as a beat reporter covering health-related political stories, and a background reporting on Congress, the White House, the FDA, HHS, hospitals, or health tech is preferred.
-Kiplinger Washington Editors is hiring a digital journalist to produce personal finance guides and newsletters. Candidates should have at least three years of digital editorial experience, and an understanding of personal finance topics that include home ownership, insurance, budgeting, and taxes.
–E and E News is hiring an editor to lead their Congress and campaigns team. Candidates should have proven experience staying on top of developments and breaking news, and must have a deep knowledge of American politics and Congress.

-The Pulitzer Center is hiring for multiple positions for their new Rainforest Investigations Network, including an editorial coordinator and a data journalist. The network will cover stories at the intersection of climate change, corruption, and governance in the world’s three main tropical rainforest regions: Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia. TEXAS
-The Dallas Morning News is hiring a breaking news reporter to cover politics, education, the social justice movement, and other community concerns. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience, and fluency in Spanish is preferred.
–The Texas Tribune is hiring a breaking news reporter to cover biennial sessions of the Texas Legislature, races for state and federal elected offices, and major court cases. Candidates should have at least one year of journalism experience. The position will eventually be based in Austin, but all employees are working remotely until summer 2021. –The Information is hiring for multiple San Francisco-based positions, including an Apple reporter, Wall Street reporter, and a gig economy and autonomous vehicles reporter. Candidates for the Wall Street reporting position can be based in San Francisco or New York.
–KPBS is hiring a San Diego-based reporter to cover social equity, systemic racism, shifting demographics, and inequality in the Imperial Valley. Candidates should have at least two years of professional media experience, and must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
-The Solutions Journalism Network is hiring a Western region manager to lead their work in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Hawaii. Candidates should have “serious journalism chops” and a familiarity with the Western region. The position can be based anywhere in California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Nevada. –STAT is hiring a reporter to shape their coverage of the intersection of technology and health. Candidates should have some previous reporting experience, and a track record as a beat reporter covering health, technology, or both is preferred. The position can be remote, but occasional trips to and from their Boston headquarters and travel to other cities for reporting will be required.
-The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is hiring an assistant managing editor for their Sports team. Candidates should have at least five years of sports news experience and a keen understanding of the Pittsburgh sports scene.
–North Country Public Radio is hiring for two reporter positions. One reporter will be based in Canton and cover the St. Lawrence Valley region, and the other will be based in Plattsburgh and cover the Champlain Valley region.
