STUDY HALL IS HIRING!
–Study Hall is hiring a newsletter editor to edit and publish our newsletter and editorial content, including the weekly Digest, Opportunities, and Updates newsletters. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience, strong copy-editing skills, and some experience in the Study Hall community is preferred, but not required. The position can be full- or part-time, and can be remote anywhere within the US. The full-time salary starts at $60,000 per year and requires working 30 hours per week. The deadline to apply is June 5.

-Cam Smith was paid CAD $350 (USD $273) to write a personal essay about how getting herpes helped her come out as bisexual for Xtra Magazine. She reports that “the editors were great [and] super easy to work with,” including being “very responsive” and “fair and kind in their edits.”

–Toronto Life is looking for pitches of long-form investigations, profiles, memoirs, and other features on entertainment, politics, food, real estate, and life in Toronto and the GTA. They are also interested in growing their pool of freelance writers. The rates range from CAD $3,500-$6,000 (USD $2,731-$4,682) for features of 4,000-6,000 words, and are around CAD $400 (USD $312) for shorter web pieces. –TIME is commissioning a health and science reporter to produce a feature on “living with a urostomy or radical cystectomy.” The rate is $1 per word for a feature of 1,800 words. Send inquiries to [email protected] by Monday, May 23.
–The Prepared is commissioning a feature on “the Great Mosque of Djenne, a mud building in Mali which is maintained through an annual community practice.” The rate is $1,000 for a feature of 1,250-2,500 words. Send inquiries through their web form.
–Input is looking for pitches of stories on Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) creators, innovators, and founders for AAPI Heritage Month. They are also interested in pitches from AAPI writers “who have stories that fit within [their] verticals (tech, culture, gaming, style, reviews, guides, etc.).” The rates generally range from $0.50-$1 per word. FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–Rest of World is hiring a part-time fact checker on a contract basis to “fact check several stories weekly, on pieces with word counts ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 words.” Candidates should have at least two years of fact checking experience and an understanding of how to use various research tools, such as LexisNexis and Pacer. The rate is $30 per hour, and the position requires working 15-25 hours per week on average. The deadline to apply is June 10.
-The Forbes Content & Design Studio is hiring freelance writers to produce branded content articles. Candidates should have some background in tech and finance writing. The rate is $1,500 for articles of approximately 800 words. Send inquiries — including a brief bio, list of beats you cover, and three to five curated writing samples — to [email protected].
–The Prepared is hiring freelance writers to produce content for their weekly Monday newsletter on engineering, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Candidates must be able to “combine technical understanding with incisiveness and clarity of thought.” The rate is $500 per newsletter of 700-1,200 words.
-Moonlight Editorial, a boutique content studio, is hiring a part-time assistant editor to write article briefs, do first-pass edits on articles, and publish content on client websites. Candidates should have at least one year of editorial experience, and familiarity with SEO is preferred. The starting rate is $4,200 per month (according to founder Mallory Farrugia), and the editor is expected to work 25-30 hours per week.
-Cash App is hiring a journalist and copywriter on a long-term contract. “Candidates must have a portfolio to be considered.” The rate is $45 per hour, and the writer would be expected to work 20-30 hours per week. Send inquiries to [email protected] by this Friday, May 20.
EVENTS AND COURSES
-Writer Meredith Talusan is hosting a weekend workshop for “academics who want to transition to writing for the public.” The two-day bootcamp will include a lecture this Saturday, May 21 and workshops this Saturday, May 21 and this Sunday, May 22 that will cover op-eds, long-form essays, narrative nonfiction, memoir, and autobiographical fiction. Tickets are $125 for the lecture only, and $300 for the lecture and workshops, however there are scholarships available to cover the costs for both the lecture and workshop.
–Raconteur is offering a free, 12-week online course for budding business journalists, “particularly writers from communities and groups that have typically been marginalized and under-represented in our industry.” Applicants cannot have previously paid, published work or a degree in journalism, and they must be residents of the UK or the Republic of Ireland. The course runs from June 6 to August 29.
-NYU School of Professional Studies is hosting a paid summer program, How to Write Op-Eds and Personal Essays. The program will teach participants how to pitch a story to an editor and will conclude with a complete essay ready for publication. The tuition for the course is $829, and the course will be self-paced and run from June 13 to August 5.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for their Reproductive Rights Reporting Fund program. The program supports reporting on reproductive rights that affect people across the U.S., including access to abortion and contraceptives, maternal health, health policy, and abortion bans. The grants will vary depending on need, “but the average grant size will be $5,000.” Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
–NPR and LAist Studios are accepting applications for their paid Oye: The Lab for Latinx Creators funding program. The program aims to provide training and resources to Latnix creators “who bring fresh perspectives and stories in audio that will resonate with Latinx listeners.” The six-week program provides access to recording equipment, a team stipend of up to $2,500 to cover time dedicated to pilot production, and other resources. The deadline to apply is next Wednesday, May 25.
NEW: –Narratively is accepting submissions for their Spring 2022 Memoir Prize contest. The contest awards prizes to “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives from unique and overlooked points of view,” and also helps adapt stories into larger projects. The grand prize is $3,000, while two additional finalists will be awarded $1,000 each. The deadline to submit is June 27.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
–Chatelaine is accepting applications for their paid Editorial Fellowship for Racialized Journalists program. The fellow will “learn the ins and outs of magazine editing for both print and digital,” including assigning and editing a range of content. The fellowship is only for “a woman or non-binary person in journalism who is Black, Indigenous, or a person of color.” The fellowship pays CAD $4,250 (USD $3,283) per month, and the fellow will be expected to work full-time for three months — including two days per week in their Toronto office. The deadline to apply is next Tuesday, May 24.
NEW: -The Peace Studio is accepting applications for their paid Arts & Journalism Fellowship program in the Bay Area of California. The program provides “support in the planning, developing, and creation of a peacebuilding project,” including a grant of $10,000. Applicants must be able to attend a four-day retreat in the Bay Area from July 27-30, 2022. The deadline to apply is May 30.
NEW: –The 19th is accepting applications for their paid Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Fellowship program. Fellows will spend a year working in editorial, audience, product, or technology roles, and will receive training, mentorship, and other opportunities. Applicants must be either students, former students, or recent graduates from an Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Fellows will be paid $70,000-$75,000, “depending on the fellowship track they are selected for.” The deadline to apply is May 31.
-The Solutions Journalism Network is accepting applications for their paid Climate Change Cohort fellowship program. The program provides training to “frame, research, and write rigorous stories about climate change solutions.” Fellows will be expected to produce three or four stories during the program. The fellowship is remote, pays a $3,000 stipend, and will run from July 2022 through July 2023. The deadline to apply is May 31.
–Insider is accepting applications for their paid fellowship program on their Health team. The program offers two fellowship tracks: a London-based fellow to cover health news, personal health, and service stories; and a remote fellow to focus on fitness and nutrition. Both fellowships are six months, and the London fellow will be paid £23,000 (USD $28,528), while the remote fellow will be paid $20 per hour. There was no deadline given to apply, but the fellowship runs from June to December.
–Marie Claire is accepting applications for their paid editorial fellowship program. The fellow will write for “all [their] verticals, in addition to supporting [their] senior editorial staff.” The fellowship is based in New York, and fellows will be expected to work Monday through Friday from 10AM to 5PM for six months. The fellowship is paid, but the rate was not publicly given. Send clips and a resume to [email protected].
–StreetsblogMASS is accepting applications for their paid summer and fall fellowship program. Fellows will cover the election, housing, and transportation issues in Massachusetts. Applicants should have a strong interest in transportation policy, and must live in or near Massachusetts in order to attend public meetings, conduct interviews, or visit project sites. The program can last for either three months with a stipend of $12,500, or six months with a stipend of $25,000, as well as up to $1,000 in “registration fees or travel costs associated with professional development events or training.” No deadline to apply was publicly given.

NEW YORK
–The Wall Street Journal is hiring an editor to “launch a first-of-its-kind climate newsletter” on the intersection of business, money, and climate. Candidates should have some experience building an audience, producing audio and visual stories, and doing live journalism, as well as a passion for climate coverage.
–ARTNews is hiring a senior staff writer to report on the art industry, including contributing to their print magazine, Art in America, and their annual Top 200 Collectors issue. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience. “Candidates with experience outside traditional arts and culture reporting (i.e. business, politics, etc.) are encouraged to apply.”
–Urban Omnibus, the publication of The Architectural League of New York, is hiring a managing editor to “oversee the editorial pipeline, from receiving and soliciting pitches, to issuing contracts, image research, proofreading, managing the publication’s CMS, and more.” Candidates should have excellent writing and editing skills, and knowledge of architecture and urbanism. The salary range is $55,000-$60,000. They are “accepting applications on a rolling basis, but giving priority to those received before June 2.”
–BET is hiring an editorial manager to manage the website and copy for their app, BET+, as well as supervising a small team of writers and editors. Candidates should have at least three years of editing, writing, and copy editing experience, as well as at least two years of “people management skills.” No salary information was given.
TEXAS
–Texas Monthly is hiring a newsletter editor to produce and manage their editorial newsletters, as well as building new campaigns. Candidates should have demonstrated experience producing editorial products via email newsletters, as well as some experience writing and testing headlines and subject lines. The position can be remote within Texas – or elsewhere in the United States, for someone with strong existing Texas knowledge – but candidates based in or willing to relocate to Austin are preferred. The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 20.
NORTHEAST
–City Cast Philly is hiring a newsletter editor to lead their daily newsletter on Philadelphia news, culture, and information. Candidates should have at least three years of writing or editing experience, including some reporting experience, and a “voracious Philly news diet.” The salary range is $60,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience. The deadline to apply is tomorrow, May 19.
SOUTHEAST
–The Post and Courier is hiring a Charleston, SC-based reporter to cover breaking news, crime and courts. Candidates should have some previous reporting experience. No salary information was given. Send a cover letter, resume, and clips to Quick Response Editor Steve Garrison at [email protected].
CENTRAL
–The Chicago Reader is hiring a reporter to cover social justice issues, and a senior editor to lead and co-create their new Racial Justice Reporting Hub and Writers Room. Candidates for both positions should have some investigative reporting experience. The starting salary is $43,000 for the reporter and the deadline to apply is May 20. The salary range is $65,000-$70,000 for the senior editor and the deadline to apply is next Friday, May 27.
–The Minnesota Reformer is hiring two St. Paul, MN-based politics reporters to lead coverage of the Minnesota Legislature and statewide elections. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting or editing experience, and “bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.” The starting salary is $50,000 and a “relocation stipend will be considered.”
SOUTHWEST
–5280 Magazine is hiring for multiple, Denver, CO-based positions, including a digital editor to oversee their daily editorial operations, including editing their daily and biweekly newsletters, as well as an associate editor to assign, edit, and write for their front-of-the-book print section. Candidates for both positions should have at least four years of digital media experience, preferably in local journalism. The starting salaries are $70,000 for the digital editor and $48,000 for the associate editor.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–Forbes is hiring a staff writer to cover the business of music, movies, TV, podcasts and celebrities. Candidates should have at least five years of financial or business reporting experience, and should understand financial terms, markets, and international tax laws. No salary information was given.
–The Verge is hiring an editor to develop and edit stories about “online platforms, the people who use them, and how everyone involved is trying to get paid,” including editing their Hot Pod newsletter. Candidates should have “a keen sense for assigning and editing insightful reported stories,” as well as a “perceptive view into the online Creator world.” The position is part of the Vox Media Union. The starting salary will be at least $53,000.
-The Forbes Content & Design Studio is hiring two senior editors to oversee the production of both text-driven and multimedia branded content features. Candidates should have at least six years of editing, writing, and content production experience, and should be comfortable communicating with clients and collaborating with designers. No salary info was given for the role.
–Modern Farmer is hiring an Indigenous affairs reporter to cover agriculture and food spaces in the Indigenous community. Candidates should have at least five years of newsroom experience and be “passionate and keenly versed in tribal and Indigenous affairs.” The salary range is $50,000-$55,000. The deadline to apply is June 1.
INTERNATIONAL
–Rest of World is hiring for multiple positions, including a copy editor ideally based in the UK, Hong Kong, or India, as well as an Africa-based regional editor to lead their coverage of the continent. Candidates for the regional editor position should have at least seven years of journalism experience, including at least three years of editing experience. No salary information was given for either position. The deadline to apply is June 10 for the copy editor position and June 15 for the regional editor position.
–New Scientist is hiring a features editor to commission and edit “at least 23 timely and compelling features” per year, as well as building contacts with writers and scientists. Candidates should have significant editing and feature writing experience, and a passionate interest in both science and technology. The position can be based in London or “be worked remotely from the US.” The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 20.
–The Walrus is hiring an associate editor to commission and edit features for their digital and print publications.
