The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Chris Erik Thomas, who is back in Berlin and looking for a new flat. The newsletter used to be released on Wednesdays, but Thursday is more of a vibe lately. Once in a while, we take a day off for mental health breaks and holidays.

TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES 

-The Center for American Progress is looking for pitches of graphic journalism, audio, video, art, and other “alternative formats” on tech and electricity in marginalized communities for their new editorial project. They are particularly interested in pitches on a tech fix for a policy problem that backfired, a place still missing a basic technology, a memoir about getting access to something, and other topics. The rate is $1,000 per piece. Send pitches to [email protected] by TOMORROW, October 7.

The Parliament is looking for pitches of reported features on EU-focused policy issues centered on either of their two upcoming themes: “Food and Drink/Holiday” for December and “Climate” for January. They are looking for “both creative/whimsical and more serious approaches to each month’s policy theme,” and pitches should be tailored to their readership of “thoughtful EU policy-focused folks across the bloc (and beyond).” The rates range from €0.50-€0.60 ($0.50-$0.60 USD) per word, depending on experience and the amount of reporting. Send pitches to [email protected] by TOMORROW, October 7 for “Food and Drink” and by November 1 for “Climate.” 

The Local Toronto is looking for pitches of features, essays, photography, and other experimental formats on the theme of “Toronto at 3AM.” They want pitches on “what happens in the middle of the night? Fun, labor, food, weird stuff I can’t imagine.” The rate is $0.75 CAD ($0.55 USD) per word. Send pitches to [email protected]. 

Audubon Magazine is looking for pitches of reported features and concise front-of-book pieces that combine “visual storytelling (data graphics, maps, etc.) [with] birds and birding seasonal service.” They are particularly interested in pitches on birds and birding, conservation, and environmental reporting. They are also looking for stories they will consider for publication in their 2023 quarterly print issues. The rates start at $0.50 per word for shorter pieces and are $1.50 per word for features. The Vinyl Factory is looking for pitches of “features, columns and all things related to vinyl culture, vinyl releases, and more.” The rate is £0.40 ($0.45 USD) per word. Send pitches and inquiries to [email protected]. 

Insider is looking for pitches of job diaries from cruise workers, Disney and Six Flags employees, executive assistants of celebrities or high profile CEOs, wait staff at famous restaurants (Carbone, Norma), or fun Halloween jobs. The rate is £270 ($302 USD) per piece. Send pitches to [email protected]. 

Alliance Magazine is looking for pitches of opinion pieces, interviews, reported features, and other formats on “decolonizing philanthropy.” The rates start at £250 ($280 USD) for 1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by mid-November. 

Positive News is looking for pitches of solutions-focused features on “progress and possibility anywhere in the world” for their upcoming January print issue. The rate is £0.30 ($0.34 USD) per word. Ars Technica is looking for pitches of stories on video games that “would be a good fit for [their] heavily tech-literate audience.” They are especially interested in takes or trend pieces on the industry and culture, gaming tech and development, unseen gaming history, interesting groups of players, and more. The rates range from $200-$300 per piece. Send pitches to [email protected] with “Freelance Pitch” in the subject line by the end of 2022. 

Apartment Therapy is looking for pitches of personal essays from Indigenous writers on their identity and home in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. The rates start at $150 per essay. Send pitches to [email protected] by TOMORROW, October 7

-JoAnna Haugen is looking for pitches of travel stories on “place-based experiences, cultural traditions, or daily aspects of life told from the perspective of people identifying as ‘local’” for a new travel publication launching in 2023. She is specifically looking for stories from locals in Gambia, Kenya, Montenegro, Nepal, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Romania, and Vietnam. The rate is £100 ($112 USD) for 500-800 words. Tech Radar is looking for pitches of features, listicles, opinion pieces, and other formats on PC gaming for PC Gaming Week, which runs from October 17-23. They would “love to hear from LGBTQ, POC, and other underrepresented writers.” The rate is $160 for 1,000 words, and “up to $200” for more involved pieces. Send pitches to [email protected]. 

Compost Magazine is looking for pitches of fiction, non-fiction, personal essays, profiles, and other formats on the theme of “water bodies.” The rates range from $100-$600 for pieces and there is a flat rate of $300 for “participation in development of this project.” See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches by this Wednesday, October 12.

NEW EVERGREEN PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES

Hakai Magazine is always looking for pitches of “colorful, action-packed, behind-the-scenes profiles of scientific research.” The stories must relate to “coastal peoples or coastal ecosystems (marine coasts — needs to be salty).” The rate is $1.10 CAD ($0.80 USD) per word for around 800 words. Wellcome Collection is always looking for pitches of articles, photo essays, series, and other formats on “health and human experience, from a wide variety of perspectives.” The rate is £0.50 ($0.56 USD) per word. See their pitch guide for more info. 

Truvere is always looking for pitches of travel guides, reported features, profiles, interviews, short stories, satire, and other formats on “travel and everything (food, culture, etc) that comes with that.” “Women, people of all abilities, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ or nonbinary individuals” are strongly encouraged to pitch. Longreads is always looking for pitches of essays, features, reading lists, and other formats on art, the internet and social media, nature, climate change, inflation, subcultures, and more. The rates start at $350 for reading lists, $500 for personal essays, and $1 per word for features. Giddy is always looking for pitches of articles, essays, interviews, and reported features on any topic related to sexual health. The rate is $350 for 800-1,200 words. Send pitches to [email protected]. 

Catapult is always looking for pitches of personal essays on travel and postcolonial writing, immigration and homes, gender and sexuality, and other topics. The rates “start at $200, vary with the length and the degree of research or reporting proposed, and are always negotiable.” See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches to [email protected]. 

IGN is always commissioning writers to produce feature stories, reported stories, explainers, op-eds, video scripts, reviews, and more on games, movies, TV, and other pop culture topics. The rates start at $150 and can exceed $1,000 depending on the format and topic. See their freelance guide for more info.

FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS 

BBC Worklife is hiring a freelance editor to help launch a new leadership and management section. Candidates must have “at least three years of editing experience with leadership, management or business features (background in narrative and reporting highly preferred over profiles and listicles).” The position begins at two days per week, with the potential to scale up. The rate will be per day, but is “still being confirmed within budget.” The position can be remote but New York-based candidates are encouraged to apply. Eater is hiring a temporary cities manager to assist with running a digital team spanning 26 cities while one of their managers is on maternity leave. Candidates should have experience managing a team, and a diverse background in reporting, writing, and editing. No salary information was given. The position can be remote within the US. 

Inverse is hiring a freelance guides writer to produce five weekly “how-to” posts, including topical and newsworthy guides (i.e. ‘How to get your Google Stadia refund ASAP’) and hardware-centric guides. Candidates must be familiar with software like iOS, Android, and Windows, and some experience writing about tech/guides is preferred but not required. “Candidates who can use screenshots to create custom images are also a major plus.” The rate is $800 per week for five guides. TODAY Digital is hiring a temporary editor to lead their holiday coverage, “predominantly [their] gift guide slate.” Candidates should have some experience with managing multiple freelancers and must be able to edit six to eight guides per day. The rate is $40 per hour and the position will begin at 20 hours per week before expanding to 40 hours per week during peak holiday coverage starting in November. The position can be remote “as long as the person’s cool with working East Coast hours.” The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, October 7

-Bloom Works is hiring a bilingual copy editor to copy edit content in Spanish and English on a temporary contract. Candidates should have at least five years of experience creating content “using plain language best practices” in both Spanish and English, as well as two years of experience editing content from other writers. The rate ranges from $80-$120 per hour, commensurate with experience, and the copy editor is expected to work full-time for four months. There is no deadline to apply.

-Naman Nepal is hiring freelance content writers to produce diet guides, build lists of recipes, and do science-backed research. Candidates should have some experience writing diet, nutrition, or health content. The rate is $200 per article. Send inquiries — including your website and writing samples — to @growthpolice.

Cratejoy is hiring a freelance editor to assist with assigning and editing blog content. Candidates must have experience with SEO writing, and assigning and working with writers. The rate ranges from $20-$30 per hour and the editor must be able to work 10-15 hours per week. The position can be remote within the US. Send resumes to [email protected]. 

OptOut is hiring a part-time, New York-based editor to write a news roundup newsletter every other week, research news outlets, and manage a Discord channel for NYC and New York state journalists. Candidates should have at least three years of experience reporting or editing news about New York. The position pays $40 per hour and requires working five hours per week. The deadline to apply is this Tuesday, October 11

-Springboard, an education tech startup, is hiring a content writer on a five-week contract to “update and edit web page copy across the site and other ad-hoc brand copywriting tasks.” The rate is $30 per hour, and the writer is expected to work 40 hours per week, with the possibility of extending after the initial contract period. Send inquiries — including “a quick summary of your experience, your CV, and a link to your portfolio or work” — to [email protected]. 

-The American Heart Association is hiring a bilingual writer on a one-year contract to assist with the production of a daily report on “the latest developments in heart disease, stroke, and health issues” in Spanish and English. Candidates should have at least five years of writing experience in English and Spanish — including some “experience creating content for consumers, health or wellness markets.” According to an email sent on behalf of a colleague at the organization, the position “can be remote within the US” and the salary is around $80,000. 

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -Periplus is accepting applications for their free mentorship program for BIPOC writers. The program aims to provide mentorship to people with “limited past access to writing resources and supportive communities.” Applicants are not eligible if they are “currently enrolled in a graduate program in creative writing or journalism” or “have published a book or have one under contract with a major US press.” The program is remote, but applicants must be based within the US and be over the age of 18. The deadline to apply is October 24.

-The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is accepting applications for their Gender Equality Grant. The program aims to “help journalists take to a new level the reporting on issues related to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.” The grant is open to both US-based and international journalists. The grant does not have a budget range, but the average size is $5,000. Grant proposals are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. 

-Training for Good is accepting applications for their paid Tarbell Fellowship program. The program aims to assist early-career journalists with mentorship and training, including access to a two-week journalism summit in Oxford. The fellowship provides a stipend of up to $50,000 and is fully remote. While the fellowship is not associated with a specific news outlet, journalists are expected to work full-time to “gain experience.” The deadline for applications is this Sunday, October 9.

FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW:Insider is accepting applications for their paid editing fellowship program. The fellow will assist with editing stories for the lifestyle and entertainment sections of their Insider Life vertical. The fellowship pays $20 per hour, and fellows are expected to work 40 hours per week for six months beginning in January 2023. The program can be remote anywhere in the US, but fellows “should expect to work from 9 AM to 5 PM EST.” There is no deadline to apply, but please note that “applications without a cover letter WILL NOT be considered” and they “are beginning to look at applications now” so they would advise applying by mid-October.

BuzzFeed News is accepting applications for their paid reporting fellowship program.  The program offers four reporting verticals: breaking news (remote), culture (LA or NY, with LA “strongly preferred”), entertainment news (LA), and health (remote or NY). According to the unit chair of their union, Cody Corrall, the fellowship pays $20 per hour with benefits, but is not covered by the union. The program requires fellows to work full-time for nine months. There is no deadline to apply.

-National Geographic Society is accepting applications for their paid National Geographic Explorers grant program. The program aims to provide funding for work in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that focuses on the ocean, land, wildlife, human ingenuity, or human history and culture. The grant can be up to $20,000, and the project can be up to one year in length — “although projects with ‘Technology’ as the primary focus can be up to two years.” The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, October 12.

In These Times is accepting applications for their paid winter editorial internship program. Interns will learn to fact-check, research, pitch articles, and other duties, and be paired with an editorial mentor. The program offers a monthly stipend of $1,440 per month and interns are expected to work four days per week for three or four months. The internship can be remote or based in Chicago. The deadline to apply is next Saturday, October 15.

-The Texas Newsroom, a collaboration between NPR and Texas public radio stations, is accepting applications for its paid Legislative Reporting Internship program in Austin, TX. The intern will assist with coverage of the 2022 Texas legislative session, be matched with a mentor, and attend workshops on audio editing, political reporting, and other topics. No radio experience is required. The internship pays $15 per hour, paid every other week, and interns are expected to work 20 hours per week. The deadline to apply is October 31.  

JOBS 

NEW YORK

The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior staff editor to provide critical editing assistance on their Flex desk, and a preview editor to assign and edit reviews of nonfiction books on their Book Review team. Candidates applying for the senior staff editor position must be able to work some nights and weekends. No salary information was given for either role, but both positions are represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

-The Tricycle Foundation is hiring an editorial assistant to support their team’s production of content for their website and quarterly print magazine, Tricycle: The Buddhist Review. Candidates should have some writing and editing experience and a “knowledge of Buddhist history, philosophy, and practice across traditions.” No salary information was given.

The New Republic is hiring a product manager to oversee product workflows and manage development products across the company. Candidates should have at least two years of experience. The salary range is $63,800, commensurate with experience. This a union position, and the candidate must live in either New York or Washington, DC. Send inquiries about the position to their digital director, Mindy Kay Bricker, at [email protected]. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 10.

Documented is hiring a deputy editor to shape and oversee their news coverage, including managing their team of five full-time reporters. Candidates should have at least four years of experience working in either digital or print journalism, including some experience editing stories in a digital newsroom and an ability to work with journalists of diverse backgrounds. The salary range is $80,000-$100,000, commensurate with experience. The position requires coming to their office at least once per week. NORTHEAST

-The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is hiring an Ithaca-based associate editor to produce content for their All About Birds website, including their Online Bird Guide. Candidates must have a strong expertise in North American birds and should have at least two years of writing experience. The salary range is $57,480-$66,802.

WASHINGTON, DC

The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a congressional correspondent to cover politics, policy, and national issues on Capitol Hill, and a reporter to cover the Supreme Court. For candidates applying for the reporter position, “previous experience covering the judiciary is helpful but not required.” The congressional correspondent position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY, while union representation for the reporter position is unclear. 

CENTRAL

Injustice Watch is hiring for multiple, Chicago-based positions, including an investigations editor to develop and guide their investigative and public-service projects, and an editorial director to develop and execute an editorial vision for the newsroom. Candidates should have at least two years of experience for the editing position and at least five for the editorial director position. The salary ranges are $80,000-$100,000 for the investigations editor and $100,000-$115,000 for the editorial director — both commensurate with experience. The deadline to apply for both positions is October 17. 

REMOTE-FRIENDLY

Prism is hiring a community engagement editor to manage their daily social media campaigns and amplify their reporting on social media, newsletters, and other channels. Candidates should have some content management experience and strong, creative writing abilities. The salary range is $70,000-$75,000. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 10.

IGN is hiring a features editor to help lead their coverage of video games, the industry, and the gaming community, and will onboard and edit freelancers. Candidates should have some previous writing and editing experience at a senior level and be knowledgeable and passionate about the video game industry. No salary information was given for the role. 

Morning Brew is hiring a reporter to join their CFO Brew team covering the world of corporate finance. Candidates should have at least three years of journalism experience, some knowledge of corporate finance, and an interest and expertise in business writing and reporting. The salary starts at $75,000. The position can be remote or based in New York. 

Wirecutter is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior SEO content strategist to optimize portions of their evergreen catalog, an associate projects editor to join their Managing Edit team, and a lead editor and an updates writer for their Discovery products section. All positions can be remote or based in New York. All positions are union positions as classified by the News Guild of New York. 

The Intercept is hiring a copy editor and digital producer to edit stories, spot check numbers, curate and edit newsletters, and develop their style guide. Candidates should have at least three years of copy editing experience and one year of newsletter production experience. The position is recognized as part of the WGA-East union and, according to the union contract, the minimum salary is $75,000. 

-SalientMG is hiring a senior writer to produce “thought leadership content for executives who lead tech companies across various sectors.” Candidates should have at least seven years of content writing experience — including “at least two years writing thought leadership content on the brand or agency side (other ghostwriting experience at the executive level may also be considered).” The salary range is $90,000-$110,000. The position can be remote within the US. 

BuzzFeed News is hiring a reporter to cover LGBTQ rights, with a focus on transgender rights. Candidates should have at least two years of experience reporting on the LGTBQ+ community and a fluency in internet culture, including “how to avoid misinformation.” According to the unit chair of their union, Cody Corrall, the minimum salary is $60,000 with benefits and the position is covered by the union. There is no deadline to apply. 

INTERNATIONAL

Canadaland is hiring for multiple, Toronto-based positions, including a managing editor to oversee their small team of podcast producers, editors, hosts, and reporters, and an editor-in-chief to lead their newsroom and set their editorial vision. Candidates should have at least three years experience for the managing editor position, and nine years experience for editor-in-chief position. The salary ranges are $90,000-$105,000 CAD ($66,268-$77,313 USD) for the managing editor and $105,000-$120,000 CAD ($77,313-$88,358 USD) for the editor-in-chief.
