The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Chris Erik Thomas, who signed a lease on a flat yesterday. The newsletter used to be released on Wednesdays, but Thursday is more of a vibe lately. Once in a while, we take a day off for mental health breaks and holidays.

–Atmos is looking for pitches of features on the climate and culture, inspired by nature, for their upcoming print issue. The rate is $1 per word. Send pitches to [email protected] by November 13.
–Nexus Media News is commissioning a freelance writer to contribute up to three short features per month. Writers should ideally have some environmental justice or climate experience, and “BIPOC writers [are] encouraged to apply.” The rate is $500 per reported feature. –Canopy Atlanta is looking for pitches of features on “civic issues — [including] housing, food access, equity, [and] policy — affecting Black and brown communities in Atlanta.” The rate is $0.60 per word. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Quartz at Work is looking for pitches of reported pieces on mental health and well-being in the workplace to be published in December. The rate is $0.50 per word. Send pitches to [email protected] with “Pitch” in the subject line by November 14.
–Nota, formerly The Doe, is looking for pitches of “bylined or anonymous first-person narratives rooted in a personal experience” on student debt relief, experiences with wildfires, pro-Tory perspectives, and other topics. They are especially interested in pitches from “insiders, agitators, and marginalized voices.” The rate is $300 for 500-700 words. –Alliance Magazine is looking for pitches of opinion pieces, interviews, reported features, and other formats on “decolonizing philanthropy.” The rates start at £250 ($279 USD) for 1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by mid-November.
–Fifty Grande is looking for pitches of essays, travelogs, guides, photo essays, and reported pieces “that explore travel as a way to ‘unplug’ and see the world differently with special attention to music, food and hotels as entry points.” They are particularly interested in “assigning destination or profile pieces (about people, places or hotels), first-person travelogs, think-piece essays, historical stories, sustainable tourism features, and prominent Q&As.” The rates range from $250-$700, depending on the piece. –Sidetracked Magazine is looking for pitches of “personal stories [on] adventure, accompanied by top-quality photography.” The rates range from £200-£450 ($224-$503 USD), which “encompasses everything from short, 500-600-word Single Moments to 2,000-word features.” See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches within the next two or three weeks.
–IMPACT Magazine is looking for pitches of short, timely stories with a Canadian focus, profiles of Canadian athletes, and narrative-based travel stories. The rate is $0.40 CAD ($0.29 USD) per word. Send pitches to [email protected] by November 7.
–Ars Technica is looking for pitches of stories on video games that “would be a good fit for [their] heavily tech-literate audience.” They are especially interested in takes or trend pieces on the industry and culture, gaming tech and development, unseen gaming history, interesting groups of players, and more. The rates range from $200-$300 per piece. Send pitches to [email protected] with “Freelance Pitch” in the subject line by the end of 2022.
–Autostraddle is commissioning a trans male writer to produce a holiday gift guide “for your ‘dapper/stylish trans boyfriend.’” They are particularly interested in QTPOC writers for this assignment. –Maisonneuve Magazine is looking for pitches of “reported features, essays, memoir, and cultural reviews with some kind of Canadian connection.” The rate is $0.15 CAD ($0.11 USD) per word. Send pitches to [email protected] by this Tuesday, November 8.

–New York Focus is always looking for pitches of investigative stories on “all things New York (state, city, what have you).” The rate is $800 for investigative stories, and they can “negotiate [rates] on a case-by-case basis.” Send pitches to [email protected].
-Asana is always looking for pitches of narrative features, interviews, science reporting, and practical guides on large-scale leadership, digital transformation in business, future-of-work concepts for today’s workers, and other topics for their new publication (launching in early 2023). –The Amp is always looking for pitches of essays, reviews, profiles, and interviews on art, music, theater, film, and dance. They are particularly interested in pitches from AAPI writers on AAPI art and culture in New York. –Insider is always looking for pitches of evergreen and holiday stories for the health and parenting section. The rate averages around “$250 for around 700ish words.” Send pitches to [email protected].

FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
NEW: –Harper’s Magazine is hiring a freelance taxonomist to assist with the maintenance of their 172-year digital archive. Candidates must be familiar with “both Library of Congress Subject Headings and SEO keywords.” The rate ranges from $40-$50 per hour, commensurate with experience, and is remote, permanent, and part-time. No deadline to apply was given.
NEW: -Asana is hiring freelance contributors to produce reported features on business, science, and innovation for their new publication aimed at an audience of executive leaders. Candidates should have some experience reporting on these topics, and “special focus is given to those who are interested in a [recurring] role to sustain series, beats, and [their] editorial calendar.” The rates range from $0.40-$0.75 per word. -CivicStory is hiring a freelance senior editor to create brief bi-weekly news updates, recruit for their fellowship, and guide editorial meetings. Candidates should have some journalism experience and a technical proficiency in Excel, Word, and Mailchimp. The rate is $35 per hour, and the editor is expected to work 15 hours per week for a minimum of three months. Send inquiries about the position to [email protected]. -eCommerceFuel is hiring a freelance researcher and writer to turn “research into organized outlines and how-to guides on topics applicable to eCommerce business owners.” Candidates should have extensive research experience and a background in eCommerce or business. The rate ranges from $75-$125 per hour depending on experience, and the writer would be expected to work 10-20 hours per week. The deadline to apply is this Saturday, November 5.
-The Institute for Palestine Studies is hiring a freelance writer to assist with production of their monthly “Press on Palestine” roundup, which “highlights bias in mainstream American reporting on Palestine.” Candidates “must be skilled in media analysis and have critical knowledge of Palestinian affairs.” The rate is $100 per roundup, and the writer will write one roundup per month for six months. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
–Thin Air Magazine is accepting submissions for their paid Bird in Your Hands writing contest for BIPOC writers. Applicants can submit a piece (or multiple pieces) of poetry, fiction, or nonfiction under 500 words. There is no fee to submit and the prize is $500. Submit through their web form by November 20.
-The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is accepting applications for their Gender Equality Grant. The program aims to “help journalists take to a new level the reporting on issues related to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.” The grant is open to both US-based and international journalists. The grant does not have a budget range, but the average size is $5,000. Grant proposals are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
NEW: –FRONTLINE is accepting applications for their Investigative Journalist Equity Initiative program. The program provides investigative journalists interested in long-form documentary storytelling with one-on-one support and seminars, and places them within “a production company to expose them to the business side of documentary filmmaking.” Applicants should have at least a decade of news experience. The program is remote and there is no deadline to apply, but the first cohort will begin in early December.
NEW: -The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics is accepting applications for their two-week fellowship program. The fellowship focused on professional ethics and ethical leadership by “examining the actions and choices of German and international journalists in covering and supporting Nazi policies.” Applicants should have less than a decade of journalism experience. The program requires spending two weeks in Berlin and Poland, where fellows will “visit key sites of Nazi history and participate in daily seminars led by specialized faculty.” The program is fully-funded and cost-free for participants, and 14-16 fellows will be chosen. Send inquiries about the program to their program director, Rebecca Scott, at [email protected]. The deadline to apply is January 3.
–Insider is accepting applications for its paid Careers Reporting Fellowship program. The fellow will write about hiring, recruiting, interviewing, and salaries, as well as contribute to story packages like Talent Insider. Candidates should have some reporting experience (“school publications are great”). The program is remote, pays $20 per hour, and fellows are expected to work 40 hours per week for six months beginning in January 2023. There is no deadline to apply, but they are accepting and reviewing applications on a rolling basis.
–BuzzFeed News is accepting applications for their paid Health Reporting Fellowship program. The fellow will assist with the publication of “engaging, entertaining, and science-backed stories on the health beat.” The program pays a range of $18-$20 per hour with benefits, but is not covered by the union. The fellowship requires fellows to work full-time for nine months, and can be remote or based in New York. There is no deadline to apply.
–Sports Illustrated is accepting applications for their paid copy desk internship program. The program begins in spring (but the “start date is flexible”) and is fully remote. “Candidates with copy editing experience at a campus or professional publication will be strongest.” The rate is $17.39 per hour, and the intern is expected to work 24 hours per week (“preferably split into three full days”) for 10 weeks. –The Nation is accepting applications for their paid Victor S. Navasky Internship program in New York. The editorial interns will learn fact-checking and are “encouraged to pitch and write their own articles for the magazine.” There will be five editorial positions and one position “dedicated to a business internship, focused entirely on the publishing process.” The internship pays $18 per hour, and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week for six months, which works out to $630 per week. They are “open to remote candidates on a case-by-case basis.” The deadline to apply is November 25.
JOBS
NEW YORK
–NYT Cooking is hiring for multiple positions, including a newsletter editor to edit, produce, and publish their daily and weekly newsletters, and an assistant content strategist to coordinate on the placement and promotion of their recipes, recipe collections, videos, and special projects. Candidates for both positions should have at least two years of experience. The salary ranges are $115,506.56-$125,000 for the editor and $74,816-$76,000 for the strategist position. Both positions are represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
–Crain’s New York Business is hiring a political reporter to cover power, money and property in New York City. Candidates should have some writing and reporting experience meeting daily deadlines, and must be “comfortable working with campaign finance and other publicly available data, as well as filing Freedom of Information requests.” The salary range is $55,000 to $80,000, but “the upper end is not a cap, and there is room to negotiate for an enthusiastic candidate with experience,” according to their assistant managing editor, Anne Michaud. –T Magazine is hiring for multiple positions, including an assistant managing editor to plan, create, and close the magazine, and a staff editor to assist with editing front of book pieces and their weekly newsletter. The salary ranges are $120,000-$140,000 for the managing editor and $105,308.84-$110,000 for the staff editor position. Both positions are represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
-Urban Design Forum is hiring for multiple positions, including a communications manager to write and edit newsletters, invitations, and other content, as well as a program associate to plan and execute their programs and publications. Candidates for both positions should have at least one year of writing experience. The salary is $65,000 for the manager and ranges from $55,000-$58,500 for the associate position. There is no deadline to apply, but “applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the role is filled.”
NORTHEAST
-The Associated Press is hiring a Philadelphia, PA-based video journalist. Candidates should have at least three years of video journalism experience, and “professional competency in a language besides English” is preferred. No salary information was given for the role. Candidates for the senior editor position should have a “proven track record of conceiving, assigning, and editing high-impact investigative stories.” The salary ranges are $50,000-$60,000 for the operations coordinator and $100,000-$125,000 for the senior editor, commensurate with experience. –Dwell is hiring a commerce editor to oversee their shoppable content section, including assigning and editing freelance writers. Candidates should have at least five years of editorial experience. –Rewire News Group is hiring a social media editor to “create, appear in, edit, and promote digital content across all [their] platforms, including video for Instagram and TikTok.” Candidates should have at least two years of experience using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and photo and video editing software. The salary range is $60,000-$65,000. The position can be remote, but candidates based in Washington, DC or New York are preferred.
