The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Chris Erik Thomas, who can’t stop thinking about how awful The Idol is (yes, they will be watching it all). The newsletter is (usually) released on Thursdays. Once in a while, we take a day off or publish late for mental health breaks and holidays.

–Michelle Cohn was paid $350 to review the third season of The Other Two for InsideHook. She reports that the pitch-to-publishing process was smooth and quick.
–Sarah Wood was paid $340 to write a personal essay about the health effects of going sober in her mid-20s for Business Insider. She reports that the draft went through three rounds of revisions.

-The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides emergency grants of up to $10,000 for stories on threats to democracy in the US. The fund reviews proposals on a rolling basis and ends on December 31st, 2023.
–Accessible Social is a free resource hub that helps make your social media content more accessible to people with temporary or permanent disabilities, including vision and hearing impairments.
–Trusting News has launched a series of “trust kits” that are designed to help journalists build trust with their readership.

–KneeDeep Times is looking for pitches of reported features on “how specific cities or towns in the San Francisco Bay Area are adapting to climate change, as well as profiles of Bay Area climate adaptation activists and leaders.” The rate is $1 per word for pieces of 500-1,000 words. –Bloomberg Businessweek is looking for pitches of “great narrative features [and] weird ideas” for an upcoming “Out of Office” digital issue for August. Think: “Burnout, bed rot, OOO replies, travel nightmares, 24 hours in the world’s busiest youth hostel.” They are also thinking about a “Culture Wars” issue. The rate is generally $1 per word. –Yes! Magazine is looking for pitches of op-eds, cultural critiques, media analysis, and other formats on the theme of “growth” for their upcoming fall issue. The rate is $0.50 per word. See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches to [email protected] by this Tuesday, June 20.
–Earth in Color is looking for pitches of personal narratives, interviews, research-based features, photojournalism, and more on “the nexus of food, justice, sustainable agriculture, and climate solutions” for its Eatin’ Good series. Earth in Color stories are at the “intersection of Blackness and Greenness.” The rate is $680 for stories of 900-1,200 words. –Andscape is looking for pitches of reported pieces, artist interviews, cultural criticism, reported articles, and essays “reflecting on hip-hop’s 50th birthday” specifically from a Black lens. They are also interested in cultural articles and essays about TV, film, and visual or performing art (but no reviews). The rates start at $550. –Nonprofit Quarterly is looking for pitches of science-grounded fiction stories for the Fall 2023 issue of NPQ Magazine. The rate is $300 for short stories of around 500 words and $500 for “substantive science-grounded stories.” See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches by June 30.

They are particularly interested in pitches on saving money, the mysteries of pricing, and helping patients and consumers navigate our complicated healthcare system. FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–Insider is hiring a freelance writer to cover fitness tech and wearables on their Review team. Candidates should have at least two years of fitness writing experience. The rates range from $250-$500 per story. No application deadline info was given for this role.
–Better Homes & Gardens is hiring a remote editor to write timely home, garden, and other lifestyle content. Candidates should have at least two years of writing or editing experience. The rates range from $25-$30 per hour, for 20-40 hours per week, and applicants must be US- or Canada-based. No application deadline info was given for this role.
–InStyle is hiring a remote content update editor to fact-check, copy edit, and revise content as needed. Candidates should have at least two years of writing or editing experience. The rates range from $28-$30 per hour, and “applicants must live in the United States or Canada.” No application deadline info was given for this role.
–Morning Brew is hiring an IT Brew reporter to “help IT professionals make better decisions.” Candidates should have at least three years of journalism experience. The rate is $1,500 per week, and the position is full-time “beginning mid-July and continuing for 14 weeks.” No application deadline info was given for this role.
–Morning Brew is hiring a Money Scoop reporter to cover investing, taxes, jobs reports, budgeting, and other topics. Candidates with a few years of writing and reporting experience are strongly preferred. The rate is $1,500 per week, and the position is full-time “beginning ASAP through September.”
-Artistic Noise is hiring a freelance grant writer to research new funding opportunities and develop and write grant proposals. Candidates should have at least four years of writing experience and “a deep interest in arts education, mental health services, social justice, carcerally-connected initiatives, and youth development.” The rate is $60-$75 per hour, and the contract is for three months starting in July.
–The Guardian is hiring a London-based commissioning editor on a one-year contract to help shape their “environment coverage within the clear remit of [their] Age of Extinction biodiversity project.” Candidates should have some experience writing or editing for a media organization covering national and international issues. The position can be full- or part-time, four days per week. The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, June 16.
EVENTS
-The Freelance Solidarity Project is hosting a free virtual panel on “common failures of uninformed and anti-worker labor reporting” this Tuesday, June 20, at 12 PM EST. The panel will include labor journalists Maximillian Alvarez, Braden Campbell, Sarah Jaffe, and Kim Kelly.
–n+1 is hosting a free, 90-minute workshop on “global editing and assigning pieces” this Tuesday, June 20, at 7:30 PM EST. Attendees can either join remotely or attend in-person at their Brooklyn office (they will provide pizza).
-The Institute for Independent Journalists is hosting a freelance business workshop with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) on July 20 in Washington, DC. The program will include assigning editors at CNN, the New York Times, Washington Post, and Vox discussing what they’re looking for in a pitch. Registration is free for those attending the AAJA 2023 conference, and the fee is $99 for those not attending.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its one-year Ocean Reporting Network Fellowship program. The fellows will “devote a full year to their ocean investigation” and receive training and data, communication, research, and coordination support. The program covers a reporter’s salary for one year. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, June 18.
–Jewish Currents is accepting applications for its one-year remote fellowship program, which begins in September. The fellow will evaluate pitches, report and write pieces, and more. “You do not have to be Jewish — or a current expert in Jewish politics — to be right for this job.” The program pays an annual salary of $47,500 and includes benefits. -NPR and The John Alexander Project are accepting applications for their Above the Fray reporting fellowship. The fellowship aims to provide one up-and-coming radio journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported international stories for NPR. Applicants should have at least five years of professional journalism experience, including some radio experience. The fellowship covers all production and living expenses for the duration of the program. The deadline to apply is July 1.
-Nova Institute is accepting applications for the Nova Media Fellowship, which “supports print, broadcast, and digital journalists proposing to immerse themselves in the health field.” Ideal candidates are full-time journalists with an established record of publication. The fellowship runs for 12 months and begins in Fall 2023 in Baltimore, Maryland, though the start date is flexible. The pay is $105,000 and is all-inclusive. The deadline to apply is July 5.
JOBS
NEW YORK CITY
–The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a managing correspondent ($150,000-$200,000) to relaunch the On Politics newsletter, an editorial assistant ($77,808.68-$78,000) to focus on special projects in the Opinion section, and an updates writer ($59,000) to fact-check and update reviews for Wirecutter. The editorial assistant and updates writer positions are Guild positions. No application deadline info was given for these roles.
NORTHEAST
–PublicSource is hiring a Pittsburgh-based deputy editor to supervise two to three reporters, manage interns, and guide and edit stories. Candidates should have at least five years of newsroom experience, including some editing experience. The salary range is $58,000-$65,000. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, June 21.
WASHINGTON, DC
–Inside Higher Ed is a digital producer to “enhance the visual presentation of [their] news content,” a Special Content senior editor to manage reporters who produce advertiser-supported editorial content, and a senior editor to oversee several reporters. The salary ranges are $55,000-$70,000 for the digital producer and $75,000-$100,000 for the senior editor positions. The digital producer can be remote or hybrid, while the senior editors must be based in Washington, DC.
–National Geographic is hiring a photo editor to research, curate, and edit visual content for their platforms, including their website and app, social platforms, and newsletters. Candidates should have at least three years of photo research or photo editing experience. No salary or application deadline info was given for this role.
–POLITICO is hiring a data and graphics reporter to contribute to their DataPoint and Pro Analysis services, a deputy technology editor to lead their global tech coverage, and a deputy production editor to lead a team of 5-7 digital producers. No salary or application deadline info was given for these roles.
CALIFORNIA
-The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation is hiring a content writer to create content for their blog, e-blasts, website, research summaries, and other formats. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations. No salary info was given for the role. The deadline to apply is July 10.
–SFGATE is hiring a local editor to “cover the Bay Area’s neighborhoods in incredibly unique ways.” Candidates should have at least three years of writing and editing experience and “know the Bay Area inside out.” The salary range is $80,000-$85,000. No application deadline was given for this role.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–Morning Brew is hiring a Retail Brew reporter to cover the latest news and analysis from across the retail sector and an HR Brew reporter to cover pay disparity, DE&I, remote work, and other HR topics. Candidates for both positions should have at least three years of journalism experience, including some “interest and expertise in business writing and reporting.” The starting salary is $75,000 for both positions.
–Fortune is hiring a news reporter to cover business, the economy, and tech news in the US. Candidates should have at least three years of newsroom experience and have an interest in “tech, finance, markets, internet culture, and economics, and the desire to dig deeper into a beat.” The salary range is $65,000-$72,000. The position can be remote or based in New York City or one of their other offices. No application deadline was given for this role.
–American Theatre Magazine is hiring a managing editor to assist with the relaunch of their print edition as a quarterly magazine. Candidates should have at least three years of management experience and some familiarity with theater and the arts. The salary range is $70,000-$75,000. The deadline to apply is next Friday, June 23.
-Sierra Club is hiring a story editor to shape the editorial strategy of Sierra Magazine. Candidates should have substantial writing and editing experience, and “experience covering environmental issues, Earth sciences, social justice issues, or US politics” is preferred. The salary range is $70,000-$80,000. The position can be remote, but candidates based in Oakland, CA or Washington, DC are preferred.
–The Drift is hiring an editor to commission and edit longform essays for print and online.
