The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Chris Erik Thomas, who is going to eat a lot of meat during their long-overdue getaway to Prague this weekend. The newsletter is (usually) released on Thursdays. Once in a while, we take a day off or publish late for mental health breaks and holidays.

-The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides emergency grants of up to $10,000 for stories on threats to democracy in the US. The fund reviews proposals on a rolling basis and ends on December 31st, 2023.

–Logic(s) is looking for pitches of features, essays, and other formats on technology and society. They are particularly interested in queer and trans stories and “non-Americans writing about non-America.” The rates range from $1,200-$4,000. Send pitches to [email protected] by TOMORROW, June 30.
–Insider is looking for pitches of “deeply-reported, character-driven narrative features that break ground, help us make sense of the world, and are fun to read.” The rates start at $1 per word. Send pitches to [email protected].
-The National Forest Foundation is looking for pitches of personal essays on memorable experiences in “connection to water in a National Forest or Grassland” for its Winter/Spring 2024 issue. The rate is $1 per word for 1,000 words. Send pitches by next Thursday, July 6.
–KneeDeep Times is looking for pitches of reported features on “how specific cities or towns in the San Francisco Bay Area are adapting to climate change, as well as profiles of Bay Area climate adaptation activists and leaders.” The rate is $1 per word for pieces of 500-1,000 words. –Bloomberg Businessweek is looking for pitches of reported narrative features on topics related to business, including for an upcoming “Culture Wars” issue. They are specifically not looking for pitches of personal essays. The rate is generally $1 per word. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Insider is commissioning a Casper, Wyoming-based writer to attend and write about a local store opening on July 14. The rates start at $450 for the quick-turnaround piece. Send inquiries and work samples to @nuclearunicorns on Twitter by July 8.
–Nonprofit Quarterly is looking for pitches of science-grounded fiction stories for the Fall 2023 issue of NPQ Magazine. The rate is $300 for short stories of around 500 words and $500 for “substantive science-grounded stories.” See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches by TOMORROW, June 30.
–Barn Raiser is looking for pitches of opinion pieces, reported stories, Q&As, and book reviews for an upcoming editorial package on the 2023 Farm Bill. The rate is $200 for opinion pieces, $500 for reported stories, and ranges from $200-$500 for Q&As and book reviews. Send pitches to [email protected] by this Wednesday, July 5.
NEW EVERGREEN PITCH CALLS, SORTED BY HIGHEST TO LOWEST RATES
–FoodPrint is always looking for pitches of reported stories and analysis on a wide range of food-related topics focused on sustainability. They are specifically interested in pitches focused on the US food system. The rates range from $550-$700 per piece. Send pitches (and a link to some of your prior work) to [email protected].
–Longreads is always looking for pitches of reported and personal essays of “compelling stories with a strong narrative.” The rates start at $500 and vary depending on the level of reporting and research required. See their pitch guide for more info and send pitches to [email protected].
–Diem is always looking for pitches of personal essays and opinion pieces for its weekly newsletter, The Things We Don’t Talk About. They are interested in “taboo, candid, fun, and thoughtful conversation starters around relationships, health, sex, and money. The rate is $200 for around 700 words. FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–POPSUGAR is hiring an interim content director to lead their Wellness vertical on a temporary contract. Candidates should have at least eight years of digital media experience, including at least five years of experience managing a team. The annual salary range is $104,000-$133,000; however, it isn’t clear how long the contract will last. The position can be remote within the US. No application deadline was given for this role.
–Wellcome is hiring a science writer on a paid consultancy basis to attend two neuroscience workshops and produce reports on them on September 20-21 and October 19 in London. The rate is £750 ($952.46 USD) per day. The deadline to apply is July 14.
–New York Focus is hiring a freelance reporting assistant for a “document-based investigation into county jails.” Candidates should have reporting or research experience, and “be good with spreadsheets, DocumentCloud or like programs, and source-building.” The rate is $30 per hour and the assistant will ideally work 32 hours per week for 16 weeks beginning in August. “New York-based candidates are preferred, but remote work is an option.” The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, July 5.
–Boston.com is hiring a freelance weekend sports producer to work from 3-11 PM every Friday and Saturday, with a “chance to contribute to other major events and/or fill in as needed.” Candidates should have at least two years of writing and editing experience, “preferably focused on the Boston region.” No application deadline or salary info was given for the role.
–New York Amsterdam News is hiring part-time copy editors to assist with their print and digital platforms. Candidates should have at least three years of writing and editing experience, and competence in or knowledge of African American culture and history. The rates range from $25-$30 per hour and candidates must be available to work from 9 AM to 6 PM EST on Wednesdays and “flexible hours” from Thursday to Tuesday. -Knology Ltd is hiring a freelance editor to review reports, peer review publications, and blog for about eight hours per month. Candidates should have some experience “editing and proofing social science reports and peer-reviewed publications.” The rates range from $30-$35 per hour and the position can be remote across the US. Applications are open until the position is filled.
EVENTS
-The Institute for Independent Journalists is hosting a freelance business workshop with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) on July 20 in Washington, DC. The program will include assigning editors at CNN, the New York Times, Washington Post, and Vox discussing what they’re looking for in a pitch. Registration is free for those attending the AAJA 2023 conference, and the fee is $99 for those not attending.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
-PEN America is accepting applications for its Bare Life Review Grant program. The program aims to support literary works in progress by immigrant and refugee writers. The works must be fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry. The program awards grants of $5,000 each. The deadline to apply is July 21.
-Little, Brown Spark, in partnership with the Psychotherapy Networker, is accepting submissions for its New Voices Award program. Applicants can submit a “non-fiction book proposal on any topic within any branch of psychology.” The program is specifically for “previously unpublished (with the exception of articles, academic papers, or self-published books) and unagented writers from underrepresented backgrounds.” The award provides a $50,000 advance, a ticket to the Psychotherapy Networker’s 2024 Symposium in Washington, DC, and a $500 travel stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
NEW: –CalMatters is accepting applications for its 2023/2024 College Journalism Network Fellowship. The program is aimed at undergraduate student journalists at California colleges or universities who want to cover higher education. Fellows will “receive training in reporting, higher education policy, and navigating the journalism industry.” The program includes a stipend of $1,200 per month and fellows will work about 10-15 hours per week. The program begins September 1 and runs through May. The deadline to apply is July 17.
NEW: –ProPublica is accepting applications for its Diamonstein-Spielvogel Visual Journalism Fellowship program. The fellow will join the editorial team for two years and collaborate on in-depth investigative projects, and pitch and produce independent visual stories. Candidates should have at least three years of professional photojournalism experience and be able to travel for photo assignments around the US. The salary is $75,000 and will begin by September 15. The deadline to apply is August 8.
NEW: -The Cullman Center of the New York Public Library is accepting applications for its 2024-2025 Fellowship program in New York City. The program awards 15 fellowships to scholars and writers, including journalists, whose work will “benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.” The fellowship includes a stipend of up to $75,000, the use of an office with a computer, and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic resources. The program runs from September through May. The deadline to apply is September 29.
-The Climate Change Media Partnership is accepting applications for its CCMP COP28 Reporting Fellowship program. The program aims to bring “up to 20 journalists from low- and middle-income countries to report in-person at COP28.” Additionally, the program will award ten virtual fellowships, “with spots for up to five journalists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and up to five from the Lower Mekong region in two separate cohorts.” THe program covers travel, accommodation, and meal costs. The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, June 30.
–Rest of World is accepting applications for its paid audience internship program in New York. The intern will “work with the audience team and collaborate with [their] editorial staff on new initiatives in social media.” The internship will pay $20 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. The program will last from July to September, “with the possibility of extending through the end of the year.” The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, June 30.
-NPR and The John Alexander Project are accepting applications for its Above the Fray reporting fellowship. The fellowship aims to provide one up-and-coming radio journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported international stories for NPR. Applicants should have at least five years of professional journalism experience, including some radio experience. The fellowship covers all production and living expenses for the duration of the program. The deadline to apply is this Saturday, July 1.
-Nova Institute is accepting applications for the Nova Media Fellowship, which “supports print, broadcast, and digital journalists proposing to immerse themselves in the health field.” Ideal candidates are full-time journalists with an established record of publication. The fellowship runs for 12 months and begins in Fall 2023 in Baltimore, Maryland, though the start date is flexible. The pay is $105,000 and is all-inclusive. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, July 5.
–The Walrus is accepting applications for its 2023 TD Fellowship on Disability and Inclusion program. The fellowship is exclusively open to media professionals with a disability. The fellow will work with the marketing, events, digital, and editorial teams to produce marketing and editorial content. The position pays $800 CAD ($608 USD) per week and the fellow is expected to work 35 hours per week for nine months. The deadline to apply is July 9.
-Humanity in Action is accepting applications for its 2023/24 Landecker Democracy Fellowship program. Each fellow will create or expand on a project that “helps strengthen democracy,” with the theme this year being: “Democracy and the Politics of Memory.” Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Fellows will receive hands-on training, support, and a stipend of €15,000 ($16,380.90 USD). Applicants can be based anywhere within the US, UK, EU, or Ukraine. The deadline to apply is August 6.
-NPR is accepting applications for its Next Generation Radio training program in various cities throughout 2023. The five-day program is designed to give participants “the opportunity to learn how to report and produce a non-narrated audio piece and a companion multimedia story.” The program partners include WUNC/North Carolina Public Radio, St Louis Public Radio, and NAJA Next Gen Radio: Indigenous, among others. There is no fee for the program, and stipends are available to selected reporters. The deadline to apply varies depending on the location.
JOBS
NEW YORK CITY
–The Drift Magazine is hiring an essays editor to commission and edit longform essays for issues that come out three times a year in print and online. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience. The salary range is $50,000-$70,000. “While The Drift is based in New York City, [they] are open to considering remote candidates.” The deadline to apply is July 14.
–The New York Times is hiring a staff reporter for its Wedding section to “write roughly one to three in-depth, reported articles a week.” Candidates should have at least two years of experience in lifestyle or wedding reporting, and be “passionate about love, marriage, and relationships.” The salary range is $108,878.22-$125,000, and the position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. No application deadline info was given for this role.
–Insider is hiring an executive creative director to manage its data graphics, illustration, and photography teams. Candidates should have “a breadth of experience leading creative teams, ideally in a newsroom setting.” The salary range is $175,000-$250,000. No application deadline was given for this role.
NORTHEAST
–Boston Globe is hiring for multiple positions, including a writer for their daily newsletter, B-Side, an addiction reporter to cover drug and alcohol misuse, gambling, and vaping, an assistant digital editor to maintain Globe Opinion’s online presence, a higher education reporter to cover Boston and the greater New England region, and more. All three positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild. No application deadline or salary info was given for these roles.
-WBUR is hiring a Boston-based investigative senior reporter to cover criminal justice, the environment, businesses, local and state government, and healthcare. Candidates should have at least six years of experience producing in-depth watchdog stories. The minimum salary is $88,868 and the position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. No application deadline info was given for this role.
WASHINGTON, DC
-Freedman Consulting, LLC is hiring a senior writer and editor to research, report, and write content about public-sector innovation as part of its Bloomberg Cities Insights Unit. Candidates should have at least six years of experience in communications, journalism, government, or media, including some experience “reporting, writing, and editing digital stories.” The expected salary range is $110,000-$125,000. The position can also be based in New York; however, travel to Washington, DC one to two times per quarter is expected.
–POLITICO is hiring a data and graphics reporter to contribute to their premium subscriber offerings, which include DataPoint and Pro Analysis. Candidates should have some professional newsroom experience, and “experience with at least one programming language, such as JavaScript, Python or R” is preferred. No application deadline or salary info was given for this role.
–Global Witness is hiring a senior investigator to produce investigations on climate critical forests, primarily focused in Latin America. Candidates should have “expertise in all aspects of an investigation process from copy editing, production, and source protection to factual and legal checks.” The position can be based in Washington, DC with a salary of $97,482 or in London with a salary of £52,494. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, July 5.
CENTRAL
–Wisconsin Watch is hiring a digital producer to assist with distributing editorial content online and to its statewide and national news partners. Candidates should have some experience working in a digital news environment, and some familiarity with Wisconsin, its history, and its politics. The salary is $47,500 and the position can be based in Wisconsin, “ideally close enough to Madison to work occasionally in-person with the editorial team.” The deadline to apply is next Friday, July 7.
CALIFORNIA
–El Tímpano is hiring a Bay Area-based community reporter to engage with its Spanish-speaking audience “via service journalism and interaction primarily through text-messaging (SMS).” Candidates must be bilingual with spoken and written Spanish proficiency and have at least three years of journalism experience. The salary range is $70,000-$85,000. The deadline to apply is July 17.
-The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation is hiring a content writer to create content for its blog, e-blasts, website, research summaries, and other formats. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations. No salary info was given for the role. The deadline to apply is July 10.
NORTHWEST
–The Seattle Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a graphics and design editor ($70,400-$96,800) to create enterprise and breaking news graphics, a metro editor ($89,900-$127,000) to oversee its large Metro team, and a PM news editor ($77,700-$106,800) to supervise news desk editors and oversee the Evening Brief newsletter. No application deadline info was given.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–The Marshall Project is hiring an engagement reporter to support its Life Inside essay series, produce a “Reader to Reader” column for its quarterly magazine, and other tasks. Candidates should have extensive community journalism experience, and some familiarity with FOIA requests “would be helpful, though not required.” The salary range is $80,000-$95,000. The position can be remote within the US or based in New York City. The deadline to apply is July 28.
–CQ Researcher is hiring a features editor to research and build “The Next Step” reading list for each of its reports on sensitive issues in current events. Candidates should have experience and expertise in data journalism and visualization. The salary range is $26.34-$30.29 per hour. No application deadline info was given for this role.
-The Tiny News Collective is hiring an executive director to help build “sustainable news organizations that reflect and serve their communities.” Candidates should have a strong understanding of non-profit management and “experience managing relationships with partners, donors, founders, board members and other stakeholders.” The salary is $165,000 and the position is fully remote within the US. The deadline to apply is July 17.
–USA TODAY is hiring a breaking news reporter to cover top national news stories and monitor real-time news. Candidates should be able to file quickly and accurately and have an understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing. The minimum salary is $62,000 and the position can be based anywhere in the US except Alaska and Hawaii. No application deadline info was given for this role.
-Human Rights Watch is hiring a communications associate to provide editorial assistance and administrative support, including distributing reports, news releases, letters, and other content. Candidates should have at least one year of relevant experience, including some office and administration experience. The salary range is $52,000-$56,415. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, July 2.
–The Drift is hiring an editor to commission and edit longform essays for print and online. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience and “a strong interest in cultivating and introducing emerging writers.” The salary range is $50,000-$70,000. The position can be remote or based in New York. The deadline to apply is July 14.
-The International Women’s Media Foundation is hiring a communications coordinator to “create and [execute] innovative social media campaigns and content.” Candidates should have at least one year of experience working in external-facing communications, and some “experience in a media, journalism, gender equity, or related/adjacent issues-based industry is a plus.” The starting salary is $55,000. The position can be remote, “however, residency in Washington, D.C., New York City, or Los Angeles is a plus for this position.” The deadline to apply is July 15.
