-Ethan Freedman has published three stories with Ambrook Research after their recent call for contributors in the Opps last month. He reports that it has been “lovely working with” his editor, Jesse Hirsch.

Hannah Macready has published three stories with Ambrook Research after their recent call for contributors in the Opps last month. She was paid $500 per piece to write about farming influencers, chick culling, and antibiotic labeling in meat. She now works regularly with them, publishing around one article per week — and she got a shoutout in their editor Jesse Hirsch’s newsletter after her first piece.

NEW: Bloomberg is hiring a retail reporter to cover Walmart and its “big-box rivals, from Target to Best Buy, all of which are trying to adapt in the age of Amazon.” Candidates should have “first-rate” writing and reporting skills, and some “experience covering companies, the economy, markets or labor, or an interest in learning.” The salary range is $115,000-$140,000. Harper’s Magazine is hiring an assistant editor to assist with “fact-checking, proofreading, and using InDesign to input copy changes and adjust layouts.” Candidates with some InDesign experience are strongly preferred. NEW: -Syracuse University is hiring an assistant teaching professor of journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. NEW: -Lookout Santa Cruz is hiring an investigative correspondent to lead a beat focused on criminal justice. NEW: The Guardian US is hiring for multiple positions, including an investigative reporter  and a senior investigative reporter to “develop and report stories and projects that hold power to account.” Candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience or at least seven for the senior role. The salary ranges are $95,000-$115,000 for the junior role and $115,000-$140,000 for the senior role. NEW: Inverse is hiring a deputy gaming editor to “produce special issues focused on Gaming and collaborate with other section editors on site-wide packages.” Candidates should have “several years” of relevant experience, including a “record of innovating the look and feel of gaming journalism.” The salary range is $88,000-$90,000. The position can be remote or based in New York, and is covered by the WGA-East. No application deadline info was given for this role.

The Hechinger Report is hiring an executive editor to lead its newsroom’s coverage of education. Candidates should have at least five years of leadership experience. The salary is $150,000. The position can be remote but “preference will be given to candidates in the New York City area” and they are “exploring a preference for Virginia and D.C.” The deadline to apply is October 22. 

Marketplace is hiring a Producer I or Producer II to join its Podcasts team to help book, edit, and research for its suite of podcasts. Candidates for the Producer I role should have at least five years of journalism, writing, reporting, and producing experience (or six years for the Producer II role). The salary range is $38.46-$46.15 per hour for Producer I and $42.31-$50.77 for Producer II. The position can be remote or based in Los Angeles. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -Narratively is accepting submissions for their 2023 Memoir Prize. They are looking for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives from unique and overlooked points of view.” The guest judge will be New York Times bestselling memoirist Stephanie Land. One Grand Prize Winner will receive $3,000, and the two finalists will receive $1,000 each. There is a $20 entry fee and the deadline to submit is November 30.

NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities.”

-Little, Brown Spark, in partnership with the Psychotherapy Networker, is accepting submissions for its New Voices Award. Applicants can submit a “non-fiction book proposal on any topic within any branch of psychology.” The program is specifically for “previously unpublished (with the exception of articles, academic papers, or self-published books) and unagented writers from underrepresented backgrounds.” The award provides a $50,000 advance, a ticket to the Psychotherapy Networker’s 2024 Symposium in Washington, DC, and a $500 travel stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15. 

-The Neal Pierce Foundation is accepting applications for its Journalism Travel Grant. The grant provides up to $1,500 to “enable journalists to travel to cities within the US to produce one or more stories for a publication.” The grant is for both freelance and staff writers. The deadline to apply is October 16. 

-California Humanities is accepting applications for its California Documentary Project (CDP) grant. The program provides support for “film, audio, or digital media projects that document California subjects and issues.” Funding is available in two categories: research and development grants of up to $15,000 and production grants of up to $50,000. The deadline to apply is November 1.

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no deadline to apply; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.”

 


 

FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: The New York Times is accepting applications for its one-year Local Investigations Fellowship. The program “gives journalists the opportunity to produce signature investigative work focused on their state or region that will be published by The Times and made available for free for co-publication by local newsrooms.” The salary range is $140,000-$160,000. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 1.

NEW: ProPublica is accepting applications for its Local Reporting Network Fellowship. The program will pay for five fellows from local newsrooms to work on a two-year contract taking on “ambitious accountability projects that wouldn’t otherwise be done.” Applicants must have some prior investigative reporting experience. The program will pay the fellows’ annual salary (up to $80,000) “plus an allowance for benefits.” The deadline to apply is October 17 and “applications should be submitted by newsroom leaders.”

NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its nine-month Gwen Ifill Mentorship Program. The program provides mentorship to women, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming journalists from underrepresented backgrounds through pairing with senior media professionals. The deadline to apply is October 22.

NEW: -The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee and the deadline to apply is January 8. 

-The Cullman Center of the New York Public Library is accepting applications for its 2024-2025 Fellowship in New York City. The program awards 15 fellowships to scholars and writers, including journalists, whose work will “benefit directly from access to the research collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.” The fellowship includes a stipend of up to $75,000, the use of an office with a computer, and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic resources. The program runs through May. The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, September 29

This American Life is accepting applications for its six-month production fellowship in New York City. The fellow will “observe and participate in all aspects of the radio show’s weekly production.” Applicants must have “experience with Pro Tools or similar digital editing software.” The fellowship pays about $6,250 per month before taxes, and the program offers “benefits like health insurance and a relocation reimbursement.” The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 1.

-NPR is accepting applications for its Next Generation Radio training program in various cities throughout 2023. The five-day program is designed to give participants “the opportunity to learn how to report and produce a non-narrated audio piece and a companion multimedia story.” The program partners include NAJA Next Gen Radio: Indigenous and Oregon Public Broadcasting. There is no fee for the program, and stipends are available to selected reporters. The remaining deadlines to apply are this Sunday, October 1 for the Oregon-based newsroom and October 15 for the Albuquerque, NM-based newsroom.

-The Wilson Center is accepting applications for its 2024-25 Fellowship. Fellows will “conduct research and write in their areas of interest, while interacting with policymakers in Washington and Wilson Center staff and other scholars in residence.” “Applicants must have a doctorate or JD.” The program offers a furnished office and stipend of $90,000 for the nine-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 1

-Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) is accepting applications for its Chauncey Bailey Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship. The one-year program provides assistance to attend a Data Journalism Bootcamp, the NICAR and IRE conferences, and more. The fellowship provides travel stipends, covers conference registrations, and other fees. The deadline to apply is next Thursday, October 5

Human Rights Watch is accepting applications for its one-year Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship. Fellows will “monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site/in-office investigations, draft reports,” and other tasks. The salary is $70,000 and the fellow can be based in New York or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply is October 9.

POLITICO is accepting applications for its one-year fellowship program in Arlington, VA. The program “features monthly training sessions, mentoring and editorial rotations for career exploration.” Fellows receive a salary of $60,000 “and [will] be invited to a full-time reporting role at POLITICO upon successful completion of the program.” The deadline to apply is October 15.

-Penguin Random House is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into multiple tracks, including audio production, publicity (adult), editorial (children’s), editorial (adult), marketing (adult and children’s), and editorial production. The internship is fully remote, pays $20 per hour, and interns are expected to work 28 hours per week. The deadline to apply is October 20. 

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into the following tracks: news producer, metro reporter, business reporter, features, copy editing, graphics, and photojournalism. -Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The deadline to apply is January 7.
