NEW: Lux, a feminist magazine of politics and culture, is hiring a temporary copy editor to work on the next issue of its print magazine, which closes in November. The work is flexible and self-directed, but the person must be able to start ASAP. Candidates should have at least one year of copy editing experience, and familiarity with Lux and with AP style is preferred. The rate is $30 per hour. NEW: DeSmog is hiring a freelance reporter to cover “climate accountability in the advertising and public relations industry.” Candidates should have some reporting experience, and “candidates in North America or Europe, or [those] able to work regularly in those time zones, [are] preferred.” The rate ranges from $35-$50 per hour, and reporters must be able to work 15-20 hours per week for six months, with the possibility to extend an additional three to six months. NEW YORK CITY

The Associated Press is hiring for multiple positions, including a newsletter and franchise editor and an AP News live blog news editor. Candidates for both positions should have at least three years of editing or reporting experience. The salary is $85,000 for the newsletter editor and $98,000-$108,000 for the news editor, Both positions can be based in New York or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply for both roles is this Tuesday, October 31

CENTRAL

The Illinois Answers Project is hiring an investigative reporter to join its new state investigative and solutions team. Candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience, including some familiarity with Illinois public records laws. The salary is $75,000 “but is negotiable based on experience” and the position is represented by SAG-AFTRA. The deadline to apply is December 4. 

CALIFORNIA

NEW: The San Francisco Standard is hiring for multiple positions, including a business reporter, a real estate reporter, a deputy breaking news editor, a features editor, a news enterprise editor, and a managing editor. The salary ranges are $75,000-$140,000 for the business reporter and real estate reporter, $90,000-$140,000 for the deputy breaking news editor, $110,000- $170,000 for the features editor and news enterprise editor, and $150,000-$225,000 for the managing editor. REMOTE-FRIENDLY

NEW: -The Solutions Journalism Network is hiring a director to lead its climate team. Candidates should have at least a decade of journalism experience, including at least five years of management experience. The salary range is $95,000-$125,000. The position can be remote or based in New York. The deadline to apply is November 8. 

NEW: USA TODAY is hiring a visual editor to pitch and produce stories for its photo and video department. Candidates should have some journalism experience and “a background in editorial decision-making is a must.” The minimum salary is $62,000. The position can be remote or based in Washington, DC. No application deadline info was given for this role. 

Marketplace is hiring a Producer I or Producer II to join its Podcasts team to help book, edit, and research for its suite of podcasts. Candidates for the Producer I role should have at least five years of journalism, writing, reporting, and producing experience (or six years for the Producer II role). The salary range is $38.46-$46.15 per hour for Producer I and $42.31-$50.77 for Producer II. The position can be remote or based in Los Angeles. Both positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The deadline to apply for both positions is TOMORROW, October 27.

INTERNATIONAL

NEW: The Loadout is hiring a UK-based site editor to manage the team’s coverage of console gaming. Candidates should have some management experience and “knowledge of the gaming industry and a passion for consoles and console gaming (especially PlayStation and Xbox titles).” The salary is £42,000 ($50,926 USD). -The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) is hiring a communications assistant for its international team to develop press plans, draft press releases, and more. NEW: -The Society of Environmental Journalists is hiring an executive editor to lead the organization, including overseeing all aspects of the Fund for Environmental Journalism. Candidates should have extensive experience in executive leadership, strategic planning, fundraising, and other related fields. The salary range is $160,000-$170,000. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -The Sitka Foundation is accepting applications for its Messengers of Biodiversity Reporting Grant. The program provides support for journalists looking to pursue “reporting and writing or broadcast stories about biodiversity issues in British Columbia.” Ten grants are available, and the fund provides either $10,000 CAD ($7,250 USD) for research-only, or $15,000 CAD ($10,870 USD) for research and travel costs. The deadline to apply is November 1.

NEW: -The EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) is accepting applications for its Cluster Fund Call for Proposals, which focuses on culture and climate action this year. The program “strongly welcomes project proposals that address the climate crisis directly through their cultural activities and combine culture with climate action.” The fund provides up to €20,000 ($21,100 USD) for colleagues working in clusters, and “proposals have to involve a minimum of three Full EUNIC Members.” The deadline to apply is November 6. 

-The Library of Africa and the African Diaspora is accepting applications for its 2024 LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency under the theme: “What is Africa to me?” The residency program is aimed at writers “from and/or based in Africa, the Caribbean, North America, South America, and Europe whose work engages with issues concerning Africa and/or the Diaspora, specifically, The Black Atlantic.” Applicants must be able to stay at the Library in Ghana for four weeks. The program provides $600 to cover travel costs to and from Ghana and a $500 stipend. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 29

-California Humanities is accepting applications for its California Documentary Project (CDP) grant. The program provides support for “film, audio, or digital media projects that document California subjects and issues.” Funding is available in two categories: research and development grants of up to $15,000 and production grants of up to $50,000. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, November 1.

Narratively is accepting submissions for its 2023 Memoir Prize. The contest is for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives [of 2,000-7,000 words] from unique and overlooked points of view.” The grand prize is $3,000 and two finalists will receive $1,000 each. “Narratively editors will work with the Finalists to potentially adapt their stories into larger projects in different mediums (TV, film, podcasts, etc.).” The entry fee is $20 and the deadline to submit is November 30.

-The Overseas Press Club Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholar Awards. The program is aimed to support “graduate and undergraduate students at North American colleges and universities or American students studying abroad.” “Winners receive either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work or a $4,000 fellowship to be used to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organization.” The deadline to apply is December 1.

NPR is accepting submissions for its College Podcast Challenge scholarship. The contest requires that students “create a podcast on any topic they wish to explore,” which can take the form of “an interview, narrative story, or even investigative reporting” and be done “by yourself, with a friend, or with your entire class.” The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, while the ten finalists will receive $500 each. The contest is open “to students of all ages pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who have already graduated earlier in 2023.” The deadline to submit is January 5.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no deadline to apply; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 

 

 


 

FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: The New Republic is accepting applications for its six-month social media and writing internship. The intern will draft social media copy, collect analytics data, write for the breaking news feed, and other tasks. The pay range is $17-$19 per hour and interns are expected to work full-time. The internship is remote, but applicants “must be based in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland tri-state areas.” The deadline to apply is November 30, “but please apply immediately if you’re interested.”

NEW: Sierra Club is accepting applications for its six-month editorial fellowship. Fellows will write for the website and print edition, fact-check articles, and other tasks. The fellowship can be remote or based in Oakland, CA. The rate is $20 per hour and fellows are required to work 28 hours per week. No application deadline info was given for this program. 

The Open Notebook is accepting applications for its 2024 Early-Career Fellowship Program for science journalists. Fellows will “work with a mentor to plan, report, and write articles” on the editorial team. The fellowship is remote, includes a stipend of $6,000, and is part-time for ten months. The deadline to apply is this Tuesday, October 31

Democracy Now is accepting applications for its one-year Video News Production Fellowship in New York. The program aims to “provide support and mentorship to underrepresented early-career journalists,” including “BIPOC, people with disabilities, and gender nonconforming people.” Applicants should have at least three years of shooting and editing experience. The salary is $62,400. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, November 1.

High Country News is accepting applications for its six-month 2024 News Fellowship. Two fellows will contribute to research and fact-checking, and produce reported stories, analysis, essays, and other content. The program pays a bi-weekly stipend of  $1,640.05, “as well as a work-from-home allowance of $46.15 bi-weekly and a one-time signing bonus of $1,000.” The position can be remote within the Western US. The deadline to apply is next Friday, November 3. 

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into the following tracks: news producer, metro reporter, business reporter, features, copy editing, graphics, and photojournalism. The internship pays $18.69 per hour and interns will work full-time. There will be an info session on October 6 at 1 PM PST. The deadline to apply is next Friday, November 3. 

Insider is accepting applications for its Personal Finance Editorial Fellowship. The fellow will “assist with updates to [their] existing coverage, with a focus on banking content.” Applicants should have “some knowledge of or interest in learning about credit.” The fellowship is remote within the US, the rate is $20 per hour, and the fellow is required to work 40 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is next Saturday, November 4.

-Johns Hopkins University is accepting applications for its Good Science Project-JHU MA in Science Writing Fellowship. The program “aims to improve science journalism and science itself by providing [four] $5,000 reporting grants for feature-length magazine articles on the funding and practice of science in the United States. The articles “must be completed within six months of receiving a grant, regardless of publication status, and should be at least 3,000 words long.” The deadline to apply is next Sunday, November 5.

The Paris Review is accepting applications for its six-month editorial internship in New York. Two interns will “assist with every step of the magazine’s production, particularly with fact-checking.” The program pays $20 per hour, with the option to enroll in health insurance, and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is November 15. 

The Nation is accepting applications for its six-month Victor S. Navasky Internship Program in New York. Interns will pitch and write articles, learn about source confidentiality and fact-checking, and other tasks. There are five editorial internship slots and one business internship, “focused entirely on the publishing process.” The internship pays $18 per hour ($630 per week), and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 19. 

The New York Times is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Fellowship in New York. Prospective fellows can apply for the following tracks: graphics, photographer, Upshot data reporter, reporting (multiple beats to choose from), Opinion photo editor, Visual Investigations reporter, audience producer, audience, Opinion international editor, digital news designer, and print editorial designer. All fellowship tracks have a salary of $79,214.76 and are represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The deadline to apply is December 1.

-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The deadline to apply is January 7.

-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee and the deadline to apply is January 8.
