Please note that we are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently split pitch calls into three sections: Time-Sensitive (Above Fair Rates), Evergreen (Above Fair Rates), and Time-Sensitive + Evergreen (Below Fair Rates) — and sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces. However, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. –MIT Technology Review is looking for pitches of narrative features, reported essays, and profiles on the theme of “Build” for its upcoming print issue. The rate is $1-$2 per word. NEW: –National Geographic is commissioning a “series of stories on [Japanese] history/culture.” They are specifically interested in “writers based in or from Japan.” The rate is $1,000 for 1,000 words. Send inquiries to [email protected] ASAP, as they will “start picking writers and moving forward” by this Wednesday, November 22.
NEW: –Field Notes is looking for pitches of reported features and case studies on the following content themes: “Care is the Antidote to Violence,” “Surviving Supremacy,” and “democracy, tbd.” Submissions are accepted from writers around the world. NEW: –Healthline is looking for pitches of reported features on veteran healthcare. The rate is $500 for 700-800 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by November 30.
NEW: –Fields & Stations is looking for pitches of stories “about an inexpensive, low-input, and truly carefree holiday. Something ad hoc, joyful, sensory-rich. Think sleeping on the beach, free campsites, absolute abandon.” The rate is €0.50 ($0.54 USD) for 1,000-1,500 words. Send pitches to [email protected]. The deadline for pitches is “before the new year” but they might “commission before then — just depends on the pitches coming in.”
NEW: –Allrecipes is looking for pitches of features on casual dining — specifically Rainforest Cafe, BWW, and Sizzler. “Give [them] the weird and unusual.” The average rate is $0.50 per word. –Lazo Magazine is looking for pitches of stories on “political and cultural pluralism – especially quirky international stories [with] a multicultural angle.” The rate is $400 for 1,200-3,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by November 27.
NEW: –Sonder is looking for pitches of “short stories, flash fiction, and creative nonfiction all based on the theme of ‘MADNESS.’” The rate is €300 ($326 USD) per piece. See their pitch guide for more info and submit through their pitch form by December 30.

–The Lighthouse is looking for pitches of “nontraditional ideas to share about the holidays” from Black women, femmes, and folks from the Southeast. NEW: –Cosmopolitan is looking for pitches of “Confessays,” which are “erotic personal essays detailing real-life sexperiences — ideally of a particularly hot, surprising, out-there, or otherwise memorable nature. The rate is $250 per essay. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Insider is looking for pitches of essays or as-told-to’s on anyone who travels “with their spouse or parent who works on a cruise ship.” The rate is $250 per piece. Send pitches to @nuclearunicorns on X.
–Insider is looking for pitches of cost breakdown essays from writers who spent “a LOT for/on a recent trip to Disney” (like over “$1,500+ and [the trip was] sometime this year). NEW: –Good Beer Hunting is always looking for pitches of features for its Olly Olly vertical that “explore nature as a character” — and “beer need not be a part of the story.” They also always look for stories that “explore the origins, craft, traditions, and geography” of drinks that “go beyond beer.” The rate is around $700 per feature and starts at $200 for smaller, one-off pieces with primary sources and interviews. NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting submissions for its Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. The award is open to women, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming journalists and celebrates “photojournalists whose work inspires us to take action and better understand the world.” The winner will receive a cash prize of $20,000. You can self-nominate or be nominated by an editor. The deadline to apply is December 17.
NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting submissions for its Kim Wall Memorial Fund. The program aims to “fund women or non-binary reporters covering subculture, broadly defined, and what Kim liked to call ‘the undercurrents of rebellion.’” Multiple grants of $5,000 will be awarded to “affiliated or freelance women or nonbinary journalists.” The deadline to apply is December 17.
-MOZAIK Philanthropy is accepting submissions for its 2023 Future Art Writers Award. The program is for “emerging and established art writers, whose work engages the art on view in the current ‘WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.’ and ‘WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.: YEAR OF HOPE’ virtual exhibitions, or alternatively, any proposed written work that takes art as its focus in the struggle for freedom in Iran.” Selected pitches will be awarded a $1,000 honorarium to the writer for the full development of their piece. The deadline to apply is November 20.
–Narratively is accepting submissions for its 2023 Memoir Prize. The contest is for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives [of 2,000-7,000 words] from unique and overlooked points of view.” The grand prize is $3,000, and two finalists will receive $1,000 each. “Narratively editors will work with the Finalists to potentially adapt their stories into larger projects in different mediums (TV, film, podcasts, etc.).” The entry fee is $20, and the submission deadline is November 30.
–McSweeny’s is accepting submissions for its Column Contest. Submissions can be any form and type of content, including creative nonfiction, personal narratives, serial visual columns, political columns, travel columns, art columns, and more. The “three winners will receive $1,000 and commit to writing a minimum of eight installments of their columns.” The deadline to apply is November 30.
-The Asian Cultural Council is accepting applications for its 2024 Grant. The program aims to support “cultural exchange projects by individuals and organizations between Asia and the US and between Asian countries.” The grant provides “cultural enrichment opportunities” (not monetary funding) to artists and cultural creators, including art critics. The application deadline is November 30.
-The Overseas Press Club Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholar Awards. The program is aimed to support “graduate and undergraduate students at North American colleges and universities or American students studying abroad.” “Winners receive either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work or a $4,000 fellowship to…fund time in a bureau of a leading news organization.” The application deadline is December 1.
–NPR is accepting submissions for its College Podcast Challenge scholarship. The contest requires that students “create a podcast on any topic they wish to explore,” which can take the form of “an interview, narrative story, or even investigative reporting” and be done “by yourself, with a friend, or with your entire class.” The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, while the ten finalists will receive $500 each. The contest is open “to students of all ages pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who have already graduated earlier in 2023.” The deadline to submit is January 5.
-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”
-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and [need] support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no application deadline; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.”
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
NEW: -The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is accepting applications for its Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Digital News in Oxford, UK. Applicants “should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be close to completion) or have equivalent experience in” journalism, communications, or another relevant field. The salary range is £36,024-£44,263 ($44,757.84-$54,994.34 USD) per year, and the fellowship runs through August 31, 2025. The deadline to apply is November 27.
–The Nation is accepting applications for its six-month Victor S. Navasky Internship Program in New York. Interns will pitch and write articles and learn about source confidentiality, fact-checking, and other tasks. There are five editorial internship slots and one business internship “focused entirely on the publishing process.” The internship pays $18 per hour ($630 per week), and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week. The application deadline is this Sunday, November 19.
–Grist is accepting applications for its one-year Climate News Fellow program. The fellow will “write quick takes on the news, newsletter items, and more in-depth reported stories.” The salary is $55,000, the position is covered by the Grist NewsGuild, and the fellow can be remote within the US or based in Seattle, WA. The application deadline is November 26.
–ProPublica is accepting applications for its two-year Ancil Payne Reporting Fellowship. The fellow will take on short-, medium- and long-term stories. Applicants should have “at least three and no more than seven years of professional journalism experience.” The fellowship pays $75,000 per year. The deadline to apply is November 27.
–The New Republic is accepting applications for its six-month social media and writing internship. The intern will draft social media copy, collect analytics data, write for the breaking news feed, and perform other tasks. The pay range is $17-$19 per hour, and interns are expected to work full-time. The internship is remote, but applicants “must be based in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland tri-state areas.” The application deadline is November 30, “but please apply immediately if you’re interested.”
–The New York Times is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Fellowship in New York. Prospective fellows can apply for the following tracks: graphics, photographer, Upshot data reporter, reporting (multiple beats to choose from), Opinion photo editor, Visual Investigations reporter, audience producer, audience, Opinion international editor, digital news designer, and print editorial designer. All fellowship tracks have a salary of $79,214.76 and are represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The application deadline is December 1.
-The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for its 2024-25 Nieman Visiting Fellowships in Cambridge, MA. The program is split into two fellowships (International and US), and offers “short-term research opportunities to individuals interested in working on special projects designed to advance journalism.” “For fellows not supported by an employer during the fellowship, a stipend of $1,325 per week will be provided.” The application deadline is December 1 for non-US citizens and January 31 for US citizens.
-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The application deadline is January 7.
-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee, and the application deadline is January 8.
–Sierra Magazine is accepting applications for its six-month editorial fellowship. Fellows will write for the website and print edition, fact-check articles, and other tasks. The fellowship can be remote or based in Oakland, CA. The rate is $20 per hour, and fellows must work 28 hours per week. There is no application deadline, and they are “evaluating candidates on a rolling basis.”
–USA TODAY is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Election Reporting Fellowship. The fellows can be based in a number of cities across the US, including Helena, MT; Santa Fe, NM; Montgomery, AL; Lincoln, NE; Little Rock, AK, and Hartford, CT, among others. The program also includes one fellowship focused on voter access, which can be based in the Southern or Southeastern US, “ideally Mississippi or Georgia.” The pay ranges for the program vary depending on location. No application deadline info was given for the program.
