$10,000 PROTOTIPE X STUDY HALL GRANT PROGRAM

Have a story that’s made for the big (or small screen)? Good news! We’ve partnered with Prototipe Media, a Hollywood-based production company, to launch our biggest grant program yet. We’ll be awarding 10 micro-grants of $1,000 exclusively to Study Hall members. Your submission can be as short or long as you want, and it can be pulled from your archives or a story you’re currently working on – there’s no hard and fast rule.

CALLS FOR PITCHES 

Please note that we are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently split pitch calls into three sections: Time-Sensitive (Above Fair Rates), Evergreen (Above Fair Rates), and Time-Sensitive + Evergreen (Below Fair Rates) — and sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces. However, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS (ABOVE FAIR RATES)

NEW: Narratively and Creative Nonfiction Magazine are looking for pitches for their new series, The Art of Nonfiction Storytelling. They are interested in getting at the heart of “what makes a great story truly great.” According to executive editor Jesse Sposato: “They’re looking for pieces quite literally about the art of narrative, an obscure essay you once read that changed your life; an aha moment you had while reporting undercover for your local alt-weekly; the subtle difference between immersion journalism and due-diligence reporting (and why it matters). NEW: Broccoli is looking for pitches of “thoughtful criticism, unexpected essays, and insightful reporting that is thoughtful, approachable, conversational, curious, and inclusive” for a new annual publication on “sounds.” They are not looking for pitches of poetry, fiction, or already written pieces. They will be commissioning 20-30 writers for this project. Rates will be $.50/word, negotiated as a flat fee. NEW: Barn Raiser‘s guest editor, Lydia Moran, is looking for pitches of reported features, creative nonfiction, and photo essays for a special series of arts and culture stories. “Stories will explore the work of artists, environmental stewards, community organizers, and artistic and social justice movements informing Midwestern creativity and social change, with a focus on reimagined or nontraditional forms of cartography and mapping.” The rate is a flat fee of $1,000. NEW: Full Stop Quarterly guest editor Natália Affonso is accepting submissions of essays, book reviews, interviews, and more on the theme of “Tender Tongues.” She is interested in “the power of multilingualism,” how “critics, artists, and writers push back against imperialist/colonial hierarchies (of tongues),” and other topics. Cunning Folk Magazine is looking for pitches of “interviews with musicians and artists, personal essays, articles, rituals, poetry, and short fiction” on the theme of Sound and Vision. “Due to limited capacity, we are not open to fiction submissions from North America at this time.” The rate is £100 ($126.57 USD) for each commissioned article and short story. Briarpatch Magazine‘s interim editor, Sophie Jin, is looking for pitches of “investigative journalism, interviews, feature articles, narrative reporting, project profiles, comics and graphic texts, book reviews, and photo essays that are rooted in anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, feminist struggle in Canada.” The rates range from $150-$350 CAD ($112-$261 USD), depending on word count. NEW: -New_Public is hiring a researcher on a part-time contract to “research local communities and institutions, what is and isn’t working in local digital public spaces, and the needs of local leaders and the people they serve.” Candidates should have some experience conducting literature reviews and planning for and conducting expert interviews. NEW: Talkiatry‘s managing editor, Elissa Suh, is commissioning freelancers to write informational articles and guides for their blog. NEW: The Dodo is hiring a staff writer on a temporary contract to write “fun, entertaining, emotional stories about animals.” Candidates should have “superb writing and grammar skills, and imbue your work with style and humor.” The annual salary range is $70,000-$74,000, but it’s unclear how long the contract is for and what the final salary will be for the contract. NEW: Freelancing With Tim’s founder, Tim Herrera, is hiring an assistant to help improve and grow the newsletter and its resources. NEW: -Art Omi Pavilions @ Chatham, a new development in Chatham, NY, is hiring a part-time curator and program manager in the Hudson Valley to “help plan, curate, and develop programming for various legacy and rotating exhibition spaces and public gathering spaces. EVENTS AND RESOURCES

NEW: -Sterling College is hosting an eight-week workshop on food and environmental nonfiction. The course will teach students to craft compelling stories, allow them to workshop their pieces, and receive feedback on pitches. The tuition fee is $1,250, but a large number of tuition-free fellowships are available. The course begins the week of March 11.

-The Institute for Independent Journalists is conducting a survey that “aims to take a census of the journalists laid off or bought out in the last year-plus, uncover any trends, and assess the impact on newsroom demographics headed into a pivotal election year. Results will be published in Nieman Reports and shared through IIJ Foundation channels. The survey should take 5-7 minutes. They are “aiming to collect data through mid-February and release results in March.”

-NYU School of Professional Studies is hosting a paid winter program, How to Write Op-Eds and Personal Essays. The program will teach participants how to pitch a story to an editor and will conclude with a complete essay ready for publication. The tuition for the course is $1,099, and the course will run from March 4 through May 6. NYU Instructor Jennifer Mattson edits two essays and a pitch letter, so you’ll come away with plenty of finished material to send off.

-Gabrielle Sierra, the director of podcasting at the Council on Foreign Relations, is hosting a Women in Podcasting Meet Up at South By Southwest in Austin, TX. Join the meetup “to mingle with fellow female podcasters and producers and join a community filled with very cool and talented women. Come one, come all!” The event will take place March 11 from 4-5 PM CT at the Hilton Austin Downtown, Room 410. 

-Reporters Without Borders is conducting a survey “to help create the first U.S. State Press Freedom Index in partnership with Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI).” The project will rate the press freedom records of all U.S. states and territories based on information gathered from working journalists and media experts around the country. They are specifically looking for journalists from all 50 states and U.S. Territories to get involved. Sign up to take the survey when it launches here.

-The Institute for Independent Journalists is hosting its 2024 Freelance Journalism Conference from this Thursday, February 29 through March 1. The conference will feature “inspirational keynote addresses, eight live, interactive 75-minute long panel discussions, two networking sessions with other freelancers, the bundle of bonuses, webinars, and resources.” Speakers include Sara Goo, editor-in-chief of Axios, and Nikita Roy, host of Newsroom Robots and lead of the AI Journalism Lab at CUNY. The signup fee for the conference is $89, but Study Hall members are able to use the code STUDYHALL10 for 10% off registration at checkout. 

-The International Women’s Media Foundation will be launching a “Newsroom Safety Across America” initiative to bring its journalism safety training to local newsrooms across the United States. Fill out their web form to “express interest in bringing a workshop to your newsroom or news organization.”


GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

-The Daniel Singer Foundation is accepting submissions for its Millennium Prize Essay Contest. The foundation offers a $10,000 prize for a published article about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Essays must have been published in English any time after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Essays may be submitted by authors, editors, readers, or publishers, and the maximum length of the submission is 8,000 words. See our Opportunity Finder listing for more info. -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting submissions for its 2024 Courage in Journalism Awards. They are “currently accepting third-party nominations (no self-nominations) in English, Spanish, and French,” and “this includes the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award intended for women and nonbinary journalists who are detained, jailed, or imprisoned.” Self-nominations are not accepted. The Atlantic is accepting submissions for its 2024 Michael Kelly Award. The award recognizes work published in a US-based print or online publication that exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth.” Please keep in mind that entries must be for work published in a U.S.-based print or online publication in 2023. There is no entry fee, and the deadline to apply is March 29. 

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and [need] support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no application deadline; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: –ProPublica is accepting applications for its Investigative Editor Training Program. The program includes an intensive weeklong boot camp held June 2-6, 2024, in New York, with remote sessions via Zoom throughout the year. Expenses for meals, travel, and lodging will be covered during the boot camp. NEW: -New_Public is accepting applications for their Social Media Fellowship, which runs from March through July 2024. “The goals of this fellowship are to help further develop your skills in a professional work environment through hands-on, industry-related experience and mentorship opportunities and to make an impact on our work and culture by bringing your valuable skills and perspectives.” The rate is $40 per hour and requires working 20-25 hours per week.
