NEW YORK CITY
–The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a Home editor and an editor for their new read-aloud, audio version of Times articles. The Home editor will be responsible for the programming and presentation of the section’s digital platforms, including the home screen and push notifications. The narrated article editor should have at least five years of story editing experience and a passion for podcasts.
–Newsweek is hiring a reporter to cover breaking news and pop culture. Candidates should have at least four years of news writing experience and should have a strong interest in internet trends, US politics, crime, and other topics.
–The Wall Street Journal is hiring for multiple positions, including a deputy editor for their standards and ethics division, a photo editor to work on features coverage, and a science editor. The standards and ethics editor will help focus on race and identity and should have at least a decade of journalistic experience. The science editor should have at least three years of newsroom experience, and a focus on covering STEM fields is preferred.
–Last Week Tonight is hiring a news producer to pitch stories, investigate subjects as a news reporter, and assemble research memos for the show’s comedy writers. Some investigative reporting experience is preferred. The position will be remote for now, but eventually candidates will need to be based in New York. The deadline to apply is July 23.
–The Forward is hiring a digital journalist to cover Israel, US politics through a Jewish lens, and the organized and professional Jewish world. Candidates should have a deep knowledge of the Jewish world and at least five years of experience working in journalism. The job will be based in their Manhattan office once it is safe to do so.

CALIFORNIA
–CNN is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior editor to cover race in America, a senior writer to cover policing, a writer to cover race and cultural trends, and a data and visual journalist to cover race and policing. The positions are listed for LA but can also be done from Washington, DC; Atlanta; or New York.
–The Los Angeles Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a deputy editor for their Business section and a writer for their editorial board. The editorial board writer should have at least five years of experience reporting and writing and the ability to clearly describe governmental actions and their consequences. Both positions will begin remotely but will be based in El Segundo when the LA Times returns to the newsroom.
–The Sacramento Bee is hiring for multiple positions, including an equity reporter, a black communities reporter, an economic mobility reporter, and a team editor. All three reporting positions will report to the team editor as part of a new “community voices” team, so engagement with the Sacramento community will be critical.
–SFGATE is hiring for multiple positions, including a newsletter and social media producer, deputy managing editor, copy editor, and sports editor. Candidates for all positions should live in the Bay Area or be able to move there once it’s safe to do so.
–CalMatters is hiring a reporter to cover their new state justice beat. Candidates should have experience covering legal and justice issues and have an understanding of how the court system works. They prefer for the reporter to be based near Sacramento.
– NBC Universal is hiring a bilingual digital news producer to report and write original stories for the NBCLA.com and Telemundo52.com digital platforms. Candidates must be fully bilingual in English and Spanish and be able to work overnight hours. The position will begin as remote, but candidates must be willing to work in Universal City when it is safe to do so.

–Sentinel Colorado is hiring a managing editor to manage their team. Candidates should have experience in print, video, and digital storytelling, and they prefer candidates with knowledge of the Aurora-Denver metro area.
–Westword is hiring a Denver-based news editor to lead and manage its reporting team. Candidates should have at least five years of editorial management experience and an understanding of SEO and social media strategies.
–Austin Woman Magazine is hiring a managing editor to develop their content strategy and build relationships across various business, philanthropic, and social arenas. Candidates should have at least five years of writing experience and three years of editing experience.
-The Dallas Observer is hiring a news editor to lead and manage its reporting team. Candidates should have at least three years of editorial management experience and an understanding of SEO and social media strategies.
-The Albuquerque Journal is hiring a reporter for their Sante Fe bureau, Journal North. The beat includes crime and courts, city and county government issues, and general assignment reporting on issues impacting northern New Mexico. Candidates should have prior journalism experience, and proficiency in Spanish is a plus.

-The Freedom Forum, a nonprofit focused on First Amendment advocacy, is hiring for a senior content producer. Candidates should have at least five years of multimedia communications experience and be able to break down complex First Amendment issues for a diverse audience.
–The American Independent is hiring a political reporter to focus on original and enterprise reporting. Candidates should have at least five years of experience writing for online publications and a solid understanding of national politics.
-The Center For Public Integrity is hiring a senior reporter to cover racial inequality issues. Candidates should have at least a decade of journalism experience, including several years writing about systemic racism, and have extensive knowledge of US civil rights laws. The deadline to apply is July 29.
–Axios is hiring an executive producer to oversee their podcasts. Candidates should have at least eight years of experience in audio storytelling and two years of experience leading production on a successful podcast or radio program. The position is remote, but they expect the person to eventually be in DC.
SOUTHEAST
–INDY Week is hiring an editor-in-chief to guide the print and digital publication in Durham, NC. Candidates should have a minimum of five to seven years of journalism experience and previous editing experience.
-The Daily Memphian is hiring a Memphis-based enterprise and investigative reporter to focus on stories that explain, analyze, and hold local leaders accountable.
–MLK50, a nonprofit newsroom in Memphis, is hiring a managing editor to supervise coverage of poverty, power, and policy reform. The candidate will be expected to live in Memphis or relocate as soon as possible. Applicants should have at least seven years of local or regional news experience and at least two of experience as an editor.

The newsroom is based in Toronto and has bureaus in Ottawa and Montréal, but they are also welcoming applicants from Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. The deadline to apply is July 26.
–Newsweek UK is hiring for multiple positions, including a news reporter and sub-editor. Both positions are freelance and based in London, but can be done remotely up to five days per week.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–INSIDER is hiring an editor to build a team of freelance writers for their news division. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience. The position reports to the New York headquarters, but they are open to remote employment.
–Business Insider is hiring a weekend news editor to work alongside Insider News weekend editors, as well as a small team of reporters and fellows who help cover weekend shifts. Candidates should have a few years of experience covering news for a digital publication. The position can be done from New York or remotely, but candidates must be able to work East Coast business hours.
–Quartz is hiring a reporter to cover the future of capitalism. Candidates should have at least five years of professional reporting experience and a deep understanding of and fascination with economics, markets, banking, and finance.
-Dipsea, an audio platform for sexual wellness, is hiring a staff writer to conceptualize and write original stories that are are ”feminist, real, inclusive—and sexy.” Candidates should have experience as an editorial writer, creative writer, screenwriter, or playwright, but do not need prior experience in erotica or romantic content. The position can be remote or based in San Francisco.
GIGS AND FELLOWSHIPS
-ProPublica is hiring for multiple temporary remote positions, including an editor to work on Electionland and a research reporter to work on the Local Reporting Network. The Electionland editing position will run through November 2020, and the deadline to apply is July 31. The Local Reporting Network reporting position runs through August 2020, and the deadline to apply is July 19.
–The New York Times is hiring a temporary staff editor for T Magazine. The position includes producing a weekly newsletter and working with designers on layout and digital presentation.
–SFGATE is hiring three associate editors to cover California State Parks, Lake Tahoe, and Disneyland. All positions require that you live in the Bay Area or are able to move there once it is safe to do so. The positions are part-time and start with a temporary, three-month contract.
-Southern California Public Radio is hiring a temporary engagement producer for four to five months to report on early childhood education and serve as liaison between KPCC’s newsroom, community organizations, and academic community. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience. The deadline to apply is July 17.
–Prism, a BIPOC-led nonprofit newsroom, is hiring contributing writers to cover workers’ rights and gender justice. The position is remote and works on a six-month contract with the option to renew. Writers would be responsible for one or two pieces per month and be paid $1,000 per month.
–New Scientist is hiring a features editor to shape their coverage of physics, cosmology, and technology. The weekly science and technology magazine is based in London but welcomes applicants from anywhere in the world. Candidates should have significant feature editing experience and a passion for science and technology. The deadline to apply is July 24.
-Parcast, a Spotify-owned podcast studio focused on scripted content about true crime, history, and the supernatural, is hiring freelancers to write scripts based on assigned episode topics. The rate is $600 per 5,500-6,500 word script. Send a resume and two writing samples to [email protected].
–Topical Cream, a nonprofit magazine covering women, femmes, and gender-nonconforming individuals in contemporary art, is hiring a remote copy editor. Candidates should have an interest in gender studies, contemporary art, and New York art production. The position pays $25 per hour, and the deadline to apply is July 18.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Howard G. Buffett Fund. Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience. Grant amounts vary depending on the proposal and inclusion of a detailed budget. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
-Literary Arts is accepting applications from Oregon writers for their new Booth Emergency Fund for Writers. The fund is designed to provide financial relief to Oregon’s writers, including cartoonists, spoken word poets, and playwrights. Priority is given to BIPOC writers. The deadline to apply is July 17.
–CalMatters is accepting applications for its Fall 2020 internship program. The internships are for the following sections: health reporting, project reporting for the California Divide program, photography, revenue development, and audience engagement for election coverage. The internships are paid, run 10-12 weeks, and can be done in their Sacramento newsroom or remotely. (Some positions will require travel.) The deadline to apply is July 26.
-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant. The grant prioritizes stories told in the US, with minimal travel required. Stories should cover systemic, underreported issues like police brutality, the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, and environmental racism. The grant amount is $2,500, and the deadline is July 31.
-Investigative Reporters and Editors, a grassroots nonprofit for investigative reporters, is accepting applications for its Freelance Investigative Reports and Editors project. The grant offers two programs for applicants. The Virtual Newsroom offers everything from open-records coaching to a trained research assistant and may include a grant up to $12,500; the Editorial Consultancy is more informal, offering an advice consultation they compare to “having a one-hour meeting with a friendly editor.” The deadline to apply is August 3.
-American Public Media is accepting applications for its Fall 2020 internship in St. Paul, Minnesota. The interns will work for APM Reports, the investigations and documentary unit of American Public Media. The internship is full-time, pays $15 per hour, and will run from September 14 to December 18. The deadline to apply is August 7.
EVENTS
-The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is conducting their 21st International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) virtually this year. The conference will take place from July 20 to 24 on Zoom and will feature keynote sessions, panels, workshops, and networking events with journalists, media executives, and scholars from around the world. Registration is free and ongoing.
–Fast Company is conducting the first panel in their “Conversations for Early-Career Journalists of Color” series on July 15. The panel, How to Stand out as an Entry-Level Journalist, will include Kate Davis, Deputy Editor at Fast Company, Allegra Kirkland, Senior Politics Editor at Teen Vogue, and Yvette Miley, Senior Vice President of MSNBC and NBC News.
