Call for Pitches 2023

For the coming months, Study Hall is accepting pitches for Digest blogs (informal, bite-sized essays based on personal experience) as well as story-driven how-to guides, first-person reports on the state of media (especially emerging labor and business practices), and longform projects such as essays or features that investigate the culture of media work.

In terms of voice, we want to work with writers who have developed a unique perspective about the media industry that challenges the status quo. Your Study Hall pitch should be grounded by a strong sense as to why you, as a culture worker and writer, care about this subject on a personal level.

Whether it’s a Digest piece or a longform essay, we hope to publish writing that privileges vulnerability and personal experience. Reported pieces should be deeply-sourced and researched, and essays should go beyond the highly reactive, impulsive-take-driven nature of social media. Here are a few fantastic past pieces for reference on what we are looking for:

  • Hannah Doctor Loeb’s feature on the dating lives of journalists.
  • James Factora and Evan Kleekamp’s deep-dive on legacy media leveraging transphobic narratives.
  • Chantal Flores’s report on the lack of diversity in investigative journalism.
  • Jane Drinkard’s Digest on freelance writers trying to get higher rates.
  • Allegra Hobbs’ prescient essay, “The Writer As Influencer.”

An accepted pitch will come with some expectations that may be different from working with other outlets: a meeting with Study Hall editorial staff to discuss the idea and scheduled milestones for research, outline, and sourcing. Since Study Hall has a policy of paying kill fees in advance, you will be compensated for this research period. We just want to make sure that your pitch has legs and is adding something new to the conversation!

Pitches may be submitted using this Airtable form or sent to [email protected]. We will respond to relevant pitches in a timely manner.
