NEW: ProPublica is hiring a temporary audience editor to “write and edit concise, compelling headlines and decks for stories, explainers, impact follow-ups, and more.” Candidates should have some “experience creating social content and running social platforms.” The rate is $45 per hour and the role requires working 15-20 hours per week. There is no deadline to apply but the position is expected to run from mid-October through December, so apply ASAP

NEW: Rest of World is hiring a “regular contributor in Bangladesh who can pitch, report, and write sharp, incisive stories on tech and its impact on the country.” Candidates should have some experience covering tech and/or business. NEW: -mybest is hiring a content editor to edit buying guides, product reviews, and other content. Candidates should have at least five years of editing experience and must be comfortable editing translated text. The rate is $300 per piece and the position is remote. Calvin A. Walker was paid $300 to write about the similarities between one of Beyoncè’s tour costumes and his favorite kitchen tool for Food & Wine. He pitched the story after seeing a pitch call in a previous Opps newsletter asking for pitches that could connect pop culture with commerce. He has since written four more articles with the same editor for $300 per piece. 

Nomi Kaltmann was paid $275 AUD to write about her experience running for Parliament for Crikey Magazine. She “connected with Jack Calil, the editor, in January via Study Hall and this is the third piece [she has] published since then.” She also shared that “it is always a great experience publishing with him.”

Candidates should have at least a decade of “experience reporting and editing science articles for established journalistic publications.” The salary range is $225,000-$275,000. NEW: WIRED is hiring for multiple positions, including two senior writers to “focus on the intersection of politics and technology” and a senior editor to lead its Politics coverage. Candidates for all positions should have at least seven years of relevant experience. The salary ranges are $94,000-$140,000 for the senior writers and $95,000-$150,000 for the senior editor. NEW: The Real Deal is hiring a news editor to assign and edit content for its site and monthly magazine. NEW: The New York Times is hiring a Los Angeles-based assistant editor to help manage its Home team, including “writing and approving home screen headlines and summaries, push notifications, and targeted emails.” Candidates should have at least five years of digital news editing experience. NEW: The Real Deal is hiring a Los Angeles-based reporter to “write several original web stories per week on a real-estate beat,” in addition to in-depth features for the site and monthly magazine. REMOTE-FRIENDLY

NEW: The 19th is hiring a managing editor to supervise its team of editors, reporters, and producers, including managing its editorial calendar. High Country News is hiring an Indigenous Affairs editor to “produce stories that are important to Indigenous communities and tribal nations across the Western United States.” Candidates should have “a deep understanding of Indigenous communities and experience working with Indigenous writers, photographers and illustrators.” The salary range is $72,493-$80,548. The position can be based anywhere within the Western US. The deadline to apply is October 20. 

The Hechinger Report is hiring an executive editor to lead its newsroom’s coverage of education. Candidates should have at least five years of leadership experience. The salary is $150,000. The position can be remote but “preference will be given to candidates in the New York City area” and they are “exploring a preference for Virginia and D.C.” The deadline to apply is October 22. 

Marketplace is hiring a Producer I or Producer II to join its Podcasts team to help book, edit, and research for its suite of podcasts. Candidates for the Producer I role should have at least five years of journalism, writing, reporting, and producing experience (or six years for the Producer II role). The salary range is $38.46-$46.15 per hour for Producer I and $42.31-$50.77 for Producer II. The position can be remote or based in Los Angeles. Both positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The deadline to apply for both positions is October 27.

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities.”

-Little, Brown Spark, in partnership with the Psychotherapy Networker, is accepting submissions for its New Voices Award. Applicants can submit a “non-fiction book proposal on any topic within any branch of psychology.” The program is specifically for “previously unpublished (with the exception of articles, academic papers, or self-published books) and unagented writers from underrepresented backgrounds.” The award provides a $50,000 advance, a ticket to the Psychotherapy Networker’s 2024 Symposium in Washington, DC, and a $500 travel stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15. 

-The Neal Pierce Foundation is accepting applications for its Journalism Travel Grant. The grant provides up to $1,500 to “enable journalists to travel to cities within the US to produce one or more stories for a publication.” The grant is for both freelance and staff writers. The deadline to apply is October 16. 

-California Humanities is accepting applications for its California Documentary Project (CDP) grant. The program provides support for “film, audio, or digital media projects that document California subjects and issues.” Funding is available in two categories: research and development grants of up to $15,000 and production grants of up to $50,000. The deadline to apply is November 1.

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no deadline to apply; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


 

FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

Human Rights Watch is accepting applications for its one-year Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship. Fellows will “monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site/in-office investigations, draft reports,” and other tasks. The salary is $70,000 and the fellow can be based in New York or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 9.

POLITICO is accepting applications for its one-year fellowship program in Arlington, VA. The program “features monthly training sessions, mentoring and editorial rotations for career exploration.” Fellows receive a salary of $60,000 “and [will] be invited to a full-time reporting role at POLITICO upon successful completion of the program.” The deadline to apply is October 15.

ProPublica is accepting applications for its Local Reporting Network Fellowship. The program will pay for five fellows from local newsrooms to work on a two-year contract taking on “ambitious accountability projects that wouldn’t otherwise be done.” Applicants must have some prior investigative reporting experience. The program will pay the fellows’ annual salary (up to $80,000) “plus an allowance for benefits.” The deadline to apply is October 17 and “applications should be submitted by newsroom leaders.”

-Penguin Random House is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into multiple tracks, including audio production, publicity (adult), editorial (children’s), editorial (adult), marketing (adult and children’s), and editorial production. The internship is fully remote, pays $20 per hour, and interns are expected to work 28 hours per week. The deadline to apply is October 20. 

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its nine-month Gwen Ifill Mentorship Program. The program provides mentorship to women, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming journalists from underrepresented backgrounds through pairing with senior media professionals. The deadline to apply is October 22.

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into the following tracks: news producer, metro reporter, business reporter, features, copy editing, graphics, and photojournalism. The internship pays $18.69 per hour and interns will work full-time. There will be an info session on October 6 at 1PM PST. The deadline to apply is November 3. 

-Narratively is accepting submissions for their 2023 Memoir Prize. They are looking for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives from unique and overlooked points of view.” The guest judge will be New York Times bestselling memoirist Stephanie Land. One Grand Prize Winner will receive $3,000, and the two finalists will receive $1,000 each. There is a $20 entry fee and the deadline to submit is November 30.

-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The deadline to apply is January 7.

-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee and the deadline to apply is January 8.
