CALLS FOR PITCHES 

Please note that we are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently split pitch calls into three sections: Time-Sensitive (Above Fair Rates), Evergreen (Above Fair Rates), and Time-Sensitive + Evergreen (Below Fair Rates) — and sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces. However, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS (ABOVE FAIR RATES)

NEW: Light & Seed, a publication of the National Forest Foundation, is looking for pitches of personal essays on “how you’ve been able to connect to or rely on a National Forest or Grassland despite residing in a major city” for its upcoming Winter/Spring 2025 issue. New Lines Magazine‘s North Africa editor, Erin Clare Browne, is looking for pitches for two verticals at the magazine that will run in June, July, and August. One is Spotlight, a newsletter about underreported news and cultural trends from around the world. The other is pitches of “insightful, complex, and provocative stories that tackle the culture and intellectual life of North Africa, the Sahel, and Francophone West Africa.” Spotlight features are usually $600 and regular essays are $800. NEW: The Drift is looking for pitches of fiction and nonfiction stories and essays “driven by sharp, surprising argumentative interventions in ongoing conversations.” These may include: socially engaged cultural criticism; class-sensitive analysis; pieces that point out what’s being avoided or talked around in politics, media, arts, or even academia. Parks & Rec Business (PRB) is looking for pitches of stories about waterparks for their July issue. “Tell us all about your slides, obstacle courses, lazy rivers, and everything in-between.” The rate is $400 for 1,200-word articles. NEW: The Daily Beast‘s Senior Editor of Innovation, Tony Hồ Trần, is looking for pitches of “stories focused on solutions-oriented climate technology (e.g., geoengineering, infrastructure, future cities/communities)” for Earth Day. 100 Days in Appalachia columnist Rainesford Stauffer is looking for pitches of opinion pieces, essays, reporting, or photography from Appalachian “folks ages teen-24.” They are “actively looking for April pieces,” but you can pitch at any time. No prior experience is required. The rates start at $200 for opinion and $300 for reporting and increase based on the scope of work. -Reporters Without Borders is conducting a survey “to help create the first U.S. State Press Freedom Index in partnership with Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI).” The project will rate the press freedom records of all U.S. states and territories based on information gathered from working journalists and media experts around the country. They are specifically looking for journalists from all 50 states and U.S. Territories to get involved. Sign up to take the survey when it launches here.

GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

The Atlantic is accepting submissions for its 2024 Michael Kelly Award. The award recognizes work published in a US-based print or online publication that exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth.” Please keep in mind that entries must be for work published in a U.S.-based print or online publication in 2023. The winning entry will be awarded $25,000, and each finalist will receive $3,000. See our Opportunity Finder listing or the award page for more info, including how to apply. -The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is accepting applications for its grant program. They provide “grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial or business issues across a wide array of subjects.” They consider proposals from both freelance and staff journalists in all forms of media — text, audio, photo, and short-form video. -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and [need] support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no application deadline; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 

FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: -The Daniel K. Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy (Democracy Center) is accepting applications for its Irene Yamamoto Arts Writers Fellowship. The fellowship provides two emerging writers of color with a $5,000 grant each to write critically about theater, dance, and/or performance art. NEW: -The Asian American Journalists Association is accepting applications for its 2024 VOICES Fellowship, which provides student journalists with career-ready skills to succeed in the continually evolving media landscape. The fellowship includes training and project work that begins in late spring and culminates in person at the #AAJA24 Convention in Austin, Texas, from August 7 through 11. AAJA will pay for fellows’ travel, accommodations, meals, and registration fees for the conference. -Mother Jones is accepting applications for its Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program, which offers a crash course in investigative journalism. The next fellowship cycle will begin in June 2024, and run for one year. Fellows receive $23.52 per hour and are covered by the AFL-CIO union. The program is remote, but fellows can work in a bureau office in San Francisco, Washington, DC, or New York City.
