DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR $10,000 PROTOTIPE X SH GRANT

Prototipe Media, a Hollywood-based production company, is awarding 10 micro-grants of $1,000 exclusively to Study Hall members with film/TV ideas. The deadline for micro-grant applications has been extended to April 17th. Sign up for Prototipe Media to apply. 

Prototipe Media encourages you to submit as early as possible because they “will be selecting the micro-grant winners on a rolling basis” until the deadline. Your submission can be as short or long as you want, and it can be pulled from your archives or a story you’re currently working on – there’s no hard and fast rule.


CALLS FOR PITCHES 

Please note that we are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently split pitch calls into three sections: Time-Sensitive (Above Fair Rates), Evergreen (Above Fair Rates), and Time-Sensitive + Evergreen (Below Fair Rates) — and sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces. However, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. TIME-SENSITIVE PITCH CALLS (ABOVE FAIR RATES)

NEW: -Center for Victims of Torture editor Zuri White-Gibson is looking for pitches of stories on mental health or human rights advocacy for AAPI Heritage Month. Light & Seed, a publication of the National Forest Foundation, is looking for pitches of personal essays on “how you’ve been able to connect to or rely on a National Forest or Grassland despite residing in a major city” for its upcoming Winter/Spring 2025 issue. Parks & Rec Business (PRB) is looking for pitches of stories about waterparks for their July issue. “Tell us all about your slides, obstacle courses, lazy rivers, and everything in-between.” The rate is $400 for 1,200-word articles. The Daily Beast‘s Senior Editor of Innovation, Tony Hồ Trần, is looking for pitches of “stories focused on solutions-oriented climate technology (e.g., geoengineering, infrastructure, future cities/communities)” for Earth Day. NEW: Wired for Adventure editor Annaliese Smith is looking for pitches of practical guides on adventuring in the mountains. “For this the trip shouldn’t be the main focus of the piece, the advice should be.” The rate is about $315.32 (or £250) for 1,200-1,600 words plus images. NEW: 100 Days in Appalachia columnist Rainesford Stauffer is always looking for pitches of opinion pieces, essays, reporting, or photography from Appalachian “folks ages teen-24.” They are “interested in stories across themes and beats, as long as it connects to Appalachia and the experiences young people are having/issues they’re thinking about or impacted by/etc.” No prior experience is required. -Reporters Without Borders is conducting a survey “to help create the first U.S. State Press Freedom Index in partnership with Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI).” The project will rate the press freedom records of all U.S. states and territories based on information gathered from working journalists and media experts around the country. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -High Desert Museum is accepting submissions for its 2024 Waterston Desert Writing Prize. The prize provides financial and other support to writers whose work reflects a similar connection to the desert, recognizing the vital role deserts play worldwide in the ecosystem and the human narrative. In 2024, the Prize will recognize the winner with a $3,000 cash award and a reading and reception at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon, on September 26, 2024. The Atlantic is accepting submissions for its 2024 Michael Kelly Award. -The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is accepting applications for its grant program. They provide “grants up to $15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce deeply reported enterprise and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial or business issues across a wide array of subjects.” They consider proposals from both freelance and staff journalists in all forms of media — text, audio, photo, and short-form video. -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and [need] support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no application deadline; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: Texas Highways is accepting applications for its 2024 Summer Editorial Internship in Austin, TX. Interns will fact-check articles for print and write and pitch stories for texashighways.com, among other tasks. The internship is full-time and pays $18 per hour. NEW: -WHYY is accepting applications for its Summer 2024 internship program in Philadelphia, PA. All internships pay $15 per hour; each session is a 12-week program with interns working 16 hours a week for all internships, except Newsroom internships, which are 20 hours a week. NEW: -The International Women’s Foundation is accepting applications for its Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship for women and nonbinary journalists. The Fellow will complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and journalism internships at The Boston Globe and The New York Times. They receive a fixed monthly stipend to cover their living costs; the IWMF also arranges and covers the cost of housing in Cambridge and New York City. NEW: -The Environmental Solutions Initiative (ESI) is accepting applications for the 2024 MIT Environmental Solutions Journalism Fellowship. The Fellowship awards a stipend of $10,000 and is designed to enable Fellows to work on the project over a four-month period while still maintaining their regular employment and/or other contracts. Fellows will also be awarded up to $5,000 for project-related expenses and will have significant discretion with how to use these funds. -Mother Jones is accepting applications for its Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program, which offers a crash course in investigative journalism. The next fellowship cycle will begin in June 2024, and run for one year. Fellows receive $23.52 per hour and are covered by the AFL-CIO union. The program is remote, but fellows can work in a San Francisco, Washington, DC, or New York City bureau offices.
