STUDY HALL IS HIRING!
–Study Hall is hiring a newsletter editor to edit and publish our newsletter and editorial content, including the weekly Digest, Opportunities, and Updates newsletters. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience, strong copy-editing skills, and some experience in the Study Hall community is preferred, but not required. The position can be full- or part-time, and can be remote anywhere within the US. The full-time salary starts at $60,000 per year and requires working 30 hours per week. The deadline to apply is June 5.

–Ile-Ife Okantah will be paid $200 per episode to recap the next four episodes of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” for Vulture. She landed the gig after responding to a pitch call last week looking for TV recappers.
–Mariella Rudi was paid £200 (USD $247) to write about actor Sarah Ramos’s exhibition of Y2K autographs and celeb photos for i-D . She landed the piece after responding to an evergreen pitch call by editor, Jenna Mahale, who was “highly receptive to [Rudi’s] ideas.” She also ended up at the exhibit’s opening night where she talked to internet boyfriend Dylan O’Brien about fandom and fame.
–Car Drakes was paid $300 to write about the “Naparima Girls’ High School Cookbook” for Stained Page News . The cookbook was “a staple of Trinidadian cooking and [Drakes’s] childhood.” She landed the piece after responding to a pitch call in a February edition of Opps.

–Input is looking for pitches of stories on Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) creators, innovators, and founders for AAPI Heritage Month. They are also interested in pitches from AAPI writers “who have stories that fit within [their] verticals (tech, culture, gaming, style, reviews, guides, etc.).” The rates generally range from $0.50-$1 per word. –Maclean’s Magazine is looking for pitches of “compelling narratives” about Canada, especially “stories that amplify underrepresented voices.” They are particularly interested in pitches from BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ writers. –Monitor Magazine is looking for pitches of feature articles, investigative journalism, and book reviews on the theme of “how REITs [real estate investment trusts] have reshaped Canada’s rental market” for their upcoming September/October 2022 issue. The rate is CAD $300 (USD $232) for pieces of 750 words, CAD $500 (USD $386) for pieces of 1,450 words, and up to CAD $800 (USD $618) for features. –Healthy Rich, a personal finance blog for women, is looking for pitches of service journalism pieces on financial rules that we should get rid of (Money Rules), as well as non-financial habits that impact your relationship with money (Habits). –Variable West is looking for pitches of critical and analytical dispatches on West Coast artists showing at the Whitney Biennial from writers based in (or traveling to) NYC. The rate is $200 per dispatch of 1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by the end of May or early June.
–Kernel Magazine is looking for pitches of essays, interviews, and other nonfiction pieces on “almost any topic related to technology,” including “climate, labor, and technology in a non-US [or] non-Western setting.” The rates range from $200-$300, depending on the piece. –Adventure Uncovered is looking for pitches of stories on “the intersection of adventure and social [or] environmental change through the lens of abundance” for their upcoming issue. The rate is £100 (USD $123) per piece. –Autostraddle is looking for pitches of personal essays on kink, fetish, leather, and BDSM for Pride Month. They are specifically looking for pitches by lesbian, bi, and queer women and trans writers, and are “primarily interested in hearing from writers of color.” The rates range from $100-$150. –Vogue India is looking for pitches of interviews, profiles, opinion pieces and other formats on India’s queer community for an upcoming print issue. –Oprah Daily is always looking for pitches of first-person essays, reported features, and op-eds on finance, current events, family, health and wellness, and relationships. They “have special interest in essays with a unique angle or realization. This is less so the place for straightforward observation or testimony and more the space for analysis, self-realization, and “ah HA!” moments.” The rate is approximately $1 per word for pieces of up to 800 words. –TransLash is always looking for pitches of stories on trans and gender nonconforming joy. The rate is $350 for pieces of 750-1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected].
–Refinery29 is always looking for pitches of personal essays “that fit into the headline template ‘blank made me gay’ or are about being single and queer.” The rates start at $300 for short, non-reported essays and increase depending on reporting. Send pitches to [email protected] .
–The Long Now is always looking for pitches of reported features, essays, interviews, profiles, and book reviews “that take the (very) long view to make us think differently about now.” They are particularly interested in pitches from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ writers. FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–Popular Mechanics is hiring a regular contributor to “write about all things physics.” The rate is $400 for short pieces of around 600 words, and starts at $1 per word (up to 800 words) for longer and more deeply reported pieces. The contributor will begin with a few paid pieces and work up to doing four assignments per month. Send inquiries, including work samples, to [email protected] .
-Blue Stoop is hiring a part-time co-director of programs to implement programs that create “pathways to access writing education, inspiration, and professional support.” Candidates should have a passion for the literary arts and must be located in Philadelphia or in one of their six county service areas. The rate is $40 per hour (paid monthly), and the position requires working 15 hours per week. The deadline to apply is this Monday, May 16.
EVENTS AND COURSES
-Writer Meredith Talusan is hosting a weekend workshop for “academics who want to transition to writing for the public.” The two-day bootcamp will include a lecture on May 21 and workshops on May 21 and May 22 that will cover op-eds, long-form essays, narrative nonfiction, memoir, and autobiographical fiction. Tickets are $125 for the lecture only, and $300 for the lecture and workshops, however there are scholarships available to cover the costs for both the lecture and workshop.
–Raconteur is offering a free, 12-week online course for budding business journalists, “particularly writers from communities and groups that have typically been marginalized and under-represented in our industry.” Applicants cannot have previously paid, published work or a degree in journalism, and they must be residents of the UK or the Republic of Ireland. The course runs from June 6 to August 29.
-NYU School of Professional Studies is hosting a paid summer program, How to Write Op-Eds and Personal Essays. The program will teach participants how to pitch a story to an editor and will conclude with a complete essay ready for publication. The tuition for the course is $829, and the course will be self-paced and run from June 13 to August 5.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS
NEW: -The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for their Reproductive Rights Reporting Fund program. The program supports reporting on reproductive rights that affect people across the U.S., including access to abortion and contraceptives, maternal health, health policy, and abortion bans. The grants will vary depending on need, “but the average grant size will be $5,000.” Applications will be accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
-The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) is accepting applications for their Story Grant on U.S. Public Lands program. The program aims to fund public service reporting on the environment through grants of up to $5,000 that cover “stipends and expenses such as travel, multimedia production, translation, and more.” The deadline to apply is this Monday, May 16.
-The Andy Warhol Foundation is accepting applications for their Arts Writers Grant program. The program provides grants ranging from $15,000-$50,000 to “emerging and established writers who write about contemporary visual art” in three categories: articles, books, and short-form writing. The deadline to apply is next Wednesday, May 18.
–Oxford American is accepting submissions for their Fall 2022 Fiction Contest. Submissions must be made by a “writer whose fiction has not yet been published in a print publication with a circulation over 5,000 copies.” They are especially interested in submissions with “ties to the South or a story that furthers our mission of exploring the complexity and vitality of the South.” The contest winner will receive a prize of $1,000 and be included in their Fall 2022 issue. The deadline to submit is this Sunday, May 15.
–NPR and LAist Studios are accepting applications for their paid Oye: The Lab for Latinx Creators funding program. The program aims to provide training and resources to Latnix creators “who bring fresh perspectives and stories in audio that will resonate with Latinx listeners.” The six-week program provides access to recording equipment, a team stipend of up to $2,500 to cover time dedicated to pilot production, and other resources. The deadline to apply is May 25.
FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS
–Grist is accepting applications for their paid fellowship program. Fellows can choose between programs covering climate solutions, data, environmental justice, the Midwest, Indigenous affairs, and the news. The fellowship pays $3,334 per month and fellows are eligible for health benefits. The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 13.
–Phenomenal World is accepting applications for its paid editorial fellowship. The fellow will copy edit and proofread articles, work through multiple stages of editing on drafts, and other editorial tasks. Applicants should have at least two years of news, magazine, or book publishing experience. The fellowship pays $2,500 per month, and fellows are expected to work roughly 20 hours per week. The fellowship can be remote or based in their New York office. The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 13.
–Apple News and the National Association of Black Journalists are accepting applications for their paid fellowship program. The program is aimed at recent graduates and early career journalists, and fellows will rotate between various editorial teams before choosing a single focus area. Candidates must be able to work out of New York or Cupertino. The fellowship is for one year, runs from June 2022 through February 2023, and the rate is $42 per hour. The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 13.
–Jewish Currents is accepting applications for their paid 2022-2023 fellowship program. The fellow will evaluate pitches and other editorial content; fact-check print and web pieces; edit, report, and write pieces; and other tasks. The fellowship pays $41,000, and the fellow is expected to work full-time for one year. The fellowship is remote, but “applicants should be able to work on Eastern Time.” The deadline to apply is this Sunday, May 15.
–Words Without Borders is accepting applications for their paid editorial fellowship program. The fellow “gain hands-on experience with all aspects of the publication of a digital literary magazine – from issue planning to online promotion.” Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in international literature. The fellowship is remote, pays $16 per hour, and fellows are expected to work at least 16 hours per week for nine months. The fellow must be able to work between the hours of 10AM and 4:30PM EST. The deadline to apply is this Monday, May 16.
–Chatelaine is accepting applications for their paid Editorial Fellowship for Racialized Journalists program. The fellow will “learn the ins and outs of magazine editing for both print and digital,” including assigning and editing a range of content. The fellowship is only for “a woman or non-binary person in journalism who is Black, Indigenous, or a person of color.” The fellowship pays CAD $4,250 (USD $3,283) per month, and the fellow will be expected to work full-time for three months — including two days per week in their Toronto office. The deadline to apply is May 24.
-The Solutions Journalism Network is accepting applications for their paid Climate Change Cohort fellowship program. The program provides training to “frame, research, and write rigorous stories about climate change solutions.” Fellows will be expected to produce three or four stories during the program. The fellowship is remote, pays a $3,000 strident, and will run from July 2022 through July 2023. The deadline to apply is May 31.
–Insider is accepting applications for their paid fellowship program on their Health team. The program offers three fellowship tracks: a London-based fellow to cover health news, personal health, and service stories; a remote fellow to focus on fitness and nutrition; and a remote fellow to focus on the business side of healthcare. All fellowships are six months, and the London fellow will be paid £23,000 (USD $28,307), while the two New York-based fellows will be paid $20 per hour. There was no deadline given to apply, but the fellowship runs from June to December.
–Insider is accepting applications for their paid Hollywood and Entertainment Contributors Fellowship program. The fellow will seek out and interview “people working in Hollywood and its related entertainment industries” for a series of “as-told-to” first-person articles and essays. The fellowship is remote, pays $20 per hour, and fellows are required to work 40 hours per week for six months. There was no deadline given to apply, but the fellowship runs from June to December.
–Insider is accepting applications for their paid Transportation Reporting Fellowship program. The fellow will focus on aviation and space, and will “interview C-suite executives, cover breaking news on major industry players like Rivian, and analyze trends caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.” The fellowship is remote, pays $20 per hour, and fellows are required to work 40 hours per week for six months. There was no deadline given to apply, but the fellowship runs from June to December.
–Marie Claire is accepting applications for their paid editorial fellowship program. The fellow will write for “all [their] verticals, in addition to supporting [their] senior editorial staff.” The fellowship is based in New York, and fellows will be expected to work Monday through Friday from 10AM to 5PM for six months. The fellowship is paid, but the rate was not publicly given. Send clips and a resume to [email protected].
–StreetsblogMASS is accepting applications for their paid summer and fall fellowship program. Fellows will cover the election, housing, and transportation issues in Massachusetts. Applicants should have a strong interest in transportation policy, and must live in or near Massachusetts in order to attend public meetings, conduct interviews, or visit project sites. The program can last for either three or six months, and will pay $12,500 per quarter as well as up to $1,000 in “registration fees or travel costs associated with professional development events or training.” No deadline to apply was publicly given.
JOBS
NEW YORK
–ARTNews is hiring a senior staff writer to report on the art industry, including contributing to their print magazine, Art in America , and their annual Top 200 Collectors issue. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience. “Candidates with experience outside traditional arts and culture reporting (i.e. business, politics, etc.) are encouraged to apply.”
–New York Focus is hiring a staff reporter to produce “a mix of investigations and news stories on issues related to climate, energy, and environmental justice in New York state.” Candidates should have a familiarity with climate and environmental policy, and with New York politics. The starting salary is $55,000, commensurate with experience. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, May 15.
TEXAS
–Texas Monthly is hiring a newsletter editor to produce and manage their editorial newsletters, as well as building new campaigns. Candidates should have demonstrated experience producing editorial products via email newsletters, as well as some experience writing and testing headlines and subject lines. The position can be remote within Texas – or elsewhere in the United States, for someone with strong existing Texas knowledge – but candidates based in or willing to relocate to Austin are preferred. The deadline to apply is next Friday, May 20.
NORTHEAST
-The Institute to End Mass Incarceration is hiring a Cambridge, MA-based managing editor to oversee the publication of their online journal, Inquest . Candidates should have at least five years of editing experience, and an “understanding of the landscape of current efforts to address the crisis of mass incarceration” is preferred. The salary range is $69,100-$116,100, commensurate with experience, and the editor will be expected to work 35 hours per week. The deadline to apply is this Friday, May 13.
–City Cast Philly is hiring a newsletter editor to lead their daily newsletter on Philadelphia news, culture, and information. Candidates should have at least three years of writing or editing experience, including some reporting experience, and a “voracious Philly news diet.” The salary range is $60,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience. The deadline to apply is next Thursday, May 19.
CENTRAL
–The Chicago Reader is hiring a reporter to cover social justice issues, and a senior editor to lead and co-create their new Racial Justice Reporting Hub and Writers Room. Candidates for both positions should have some investigative reporting experience. The starting salary is $43,000 for the reporter and the deadline to apply is May 20. The salary range is $65,000-$70,000 for the senior editor and the deadline to apply is May 27.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–Modern Farmer is hiring an Indigenous affairs reporter to cover agriculture and food spaces in the Indigenous community. Candidates should have at least five years of newsroom experience and be “passionate and keenly versed in tribal and Indigenous affairs.” The salary range is $50,000-$55,000. The deadline to apply is June 1.
–Black Feminist Future is hiring a director of communication to build the communications team and “develop our culture shift work that will focus on building narrative and cultural power to disrupt misogynoir and advance Black feminisms.” Candidates should have at least seven years of communications experience. The salary range is $85,000 to $100,000. The deadline to apply is in May.
INTERNATIONAL
–New Scientist is hiring a features editor to commission and edit “at least 23 timely and compelling features” per year, as well as building contacts with writers and scientists. Candidates should have significant editing and feature writing experience, and a passionate interest in both science and technology. The position can be based in London or “be worked remotely from the US.” The deadline to apply is next Friday, May 20.
