FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS

Input is hiring news writers to produce at least three news stories per shift on at least one of the following topics: technology, social media, gaming, internet culture, trends, streetwear culture, or design. Candidates should have at least two years of reporting and writing experience. The position pays $25 per hour, depending on experience, and requires up to 27 hours per week. They are particularly interested in someone with experience writing about streetwear, sneakers, fashion, and design. 

MIT Technology Review is hiring a part-time reporter for a three-month contract. The reporter will focus on their COVID-19 Tracking Project and produce stories, break news, and provide analysis on the development of digital contact tracing and other pandemic health technologies. Candidates should have some experience covering the way health policies disproportionately harm communities of BIPOC and historically marginalized people. The position pays $35 per hour for up to 20 hours per week and can be based anywhere, but requires daily communication with a team based on the East Coast.

-Equal Justice USA is hiring a freelance writer to refresh old pieces as well as create new content for a number of its publications. Candidates should have significant professional experience writing about justice issues. They don’t include an exact compensation rate because the rate “can vary widely depending on scope of work and need.” The project will last at least four months. 

Southerly Magazine is hiring a contributing editor on a six-month contract to edit stories about ecology, justice, and culture in the American South. The rates are $300 for news stories and short features of 500-1,200 words; $500 for features up to 2,000 words; $40-$60 per hour for longer features and investigative stories; and $25 per hour for copyediting. The position can be based anywhere in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, or Texas.

-ProPublica is hiring for multiple temporary, one-year positions, including a research reporter, copy editor, data reporter, engagement reporter, and visual journalist. They are willing to consider remote work for all positions, but some come with a preference for city-specific newsrooms. The deadline to apply is October 25 for the copy editor position, October 30 for the visual journalist position, November 1 for the data reporter and engagement reporter positions, and November 8 for the research reporter position. 

EVENTS

-The Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) is hosting a three-week Media Startup Bootcamp for Black journalists, editors, and content creators who want to strengthen or start up their own digital media publications. The program is free for CABJ members; those who want to become a CABJ member but cannot afford it due to COVID-19 can get in touch at [email protected] to be signed up, and the course will be free. The deadline to sign up is November 1.

-Tim Herrera is hosting two free panels on October 25 about freelancing. The panels include “How to Get Into and Write Better Cultural Criticism” with Vox film critic and guest host Alissa Wilkinson and “Travel Writing During the Pandemic” with Imani Bashir of Travel Noire and freelancer Maya Kachroo-Levine.

-The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting a free audio storytelling course that runs from October 26 to November 29. “The Power of Digital Audio Storytelling: From Podcasts to Voice Assistants” is a four-week course that explores the fundamentals of audio storytelling, podcasting, voice assistants, and more.

GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Grist is accepting applications for their paid spring 2021 fellowship program. Applicants can choose between two programs: news and politics or environmental justice. Both fellowships pay $3334 per month for six months and are eligible for health benefit coverage. Fellows can be based anywhere in the US or at Grist’s hubs in Seattle or New York when it is safe to do so. The deadline to apply is November 16.

-NPR is accepting applications for their one-year, DC-based Kroc Fellowship. Fellows will receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing, and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates, but previous journalism experience is not required. Fellows are paid a stipend of more than $45,000 and receive benefits, including a paid vacation. Applications are accepted from October 15 to December 31. 

-The Education Writers Association is accepting applications for their reporting fellowship. The fellowship provides financial awards to journalists who want to report on issues facing the education system. Fellows will receive up to $8,000 to use toward their reporting project, as well as other assistance. The deadline to apply is November 6.

-Los Angeles Press Club is accepting applications for their Reporting on Systemic Racism Grant. The grant provides up to $2,500 for reporting that focuses on effective responses to institutional racism. Candidates must live and work in Southern California to apply for funds. The deadline to apply is October 22.

-Press On is accepting applications for their Southern Movement Media Fund. The fund will focus on documenting, reporting, and archiving the 2020 election, uprisings, and coronavirus pandemic from the perspective of marginalized and oppressed people in the South. Applicants can request $5,000 for individuals and $15,000 for organizations. The deadline to apply for the first round is October 2, and the deadline for the second round is October 23.

-The Asian American Writers’ Workshop is accepting applications for their nine-month Open City Fellowship. The fellowship aims to assist emerging Asian American, Muslim, and Arab writers as they publish narrative nonfiction on the East Asian, South and Southeast Asian, Arab and West Asian, and North and East African communities of NYC. The fellowship provides a $2,500 grant and skill-building workshops. The deadline to apply is October 29.

The Texas Tribune is accepting applications for its paid 2021 fellowships in Austin. Fellows can focus on data visuals, engagement, engineering, events, marketing and communications, multimedia, photography, and reporting. There is also a reporting fellowship in Washington, DC. The deadline for the summer 2021 program is October 30.

-The Scripps Howard Foundation is accepting applications for their yearlong fellowship. Fellows will work in one the following tracks: investigative reporting for video at Newsy; data reporting at Newsy; newsletter reporting at ProPublica; or illustrator and visual journalism at Propublica. The deadline to apply is October 30.

The Economist is accepting applications for two paid fellowships. The fellows will spend six months writing articles about politics and policy in the US. The positions will be based in either their New York or Washington, DC office, and the monthly remuneration is about $3,000. The deadline to apply is October 30.

-The USA Today Network is accepting applications for its Pulliam Journalism Fellowship and Agriculture Data Fellowship. Pulliam fellows will work with journalists and editors at either The Indianapolis Star or The Arizona Republic and be paid $650 per week for 10 weeks. Agriculture data fellows will receive a $50,000 stipend paid bi-weekly over the course of a year and report on agribusiness and its impact on rural communities for one year at the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting in Champaign, IL. The deadline to apply for both fellowships is November 1.

The Texas Newsroom, a collaboration between NPR and public radio stations in the state, is accepting applications for their paid, Austin-based 2021 Legislative Fellowship. Fellows will work with high-level editors and producers while covering the 87th Texas legislative session. Fellows will be expected to work 20 hours per week. THe deadline to apply is November 9.

-Noor Images is accepting applications for its one-year Stanley Greene Legacy Prize and Fellowship. The fellowship aims to support the work and professional aspirations of underrepresented photojournalists from the US. Fellows will receive training, grant-writing support, a $10,000 fellowship prize, and be compensated for travel expenses for field reporting or research up to $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 1.

INTERNSHIPS

The Daily Beast is accepting applications for its paid reporting internship on the Cheat Sheet and breaking news team. Interns will write and post Cheat Sheet and express news articles, write article and SEO headlines, and more. The internship runs from mid-November to the end of January. The deadline to apply is October 28.

-KQED is accepting applications for their paid arts and culture editorial internship. Interns will report and write weekly event picks, news briefs, and shorter breaking stories. They will also be strongly encouraged to file at least one in-depth, feature length story. They don’t list geographic requirements, but they want someone with “deep knowledge of the Bay Area arts scene.”

High Country News is accepting applications for its paid internship program. Interns will develop, report, and write two articles per month about the Western United States, and interns will work with editors to learn how to do interviews, frame a story, and more. The internship pays a $600 bi-weekly stipend for interns working remotely from within the Western United States; an additional $125 bi-weekly work-from-home allowance; and a one-time signing bonus of $500 to help with IT equipment. Interns can be based anywhere in the Western region of the US. The deadline to apply for the Winter internship is November 1, and is March 15 for the summer internship.

-The Emma Bowen Foundation is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program for students of color. Interns in the content track will learn about production, social media, digital media, and broadcast and online journalism from top professionals and industry executives. There is no set deadline to apply, but they recommend that students apply as soon as possible. 

Quanta Magazine is accepting applications for its paid spring and summer writing internships. Interns will research and report on physics, mathematics, biology, computer science, and other topics. Both internships will take place in their New York office, and interns are expected to work 24 hours per week.

-The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its US Reporting Internship for summer 2021. The 10-week paid internship program can be based in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Washington, DC. Interns are paid $900 per week. The deadline to apply is October 30.

The Dallas Morning News is accepting applications for its 2021 internship program. Interns will report, write, photograph, and edit stories for publication in print and online under their own bylines. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. The deadline to apply is October 30. 

The Denver Post is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program. The 10-week internship offers three programs: city desk reporting, features reporting, and photography and multimedia journalism. Candidates should have previous internship experience and a reliable car. Interns will be responsible for their own travel, housing, and transportation costs. The deadline to apply is October 30.

-The Austin American-Statesman is accepting applications for their Austin-based spring and summer internships. The spring internship pays $8 per hour for up to 180 hours per semester, while the summer internship pays $450 per week for 11 weeks. The deadline to apply for both programs is October 31. 

-The Chicago Tribune is accepting applications for its 12-week and six-month paid internships. Interns will have the opportunity to work in all newsroom departments, including metro, sports, business, data visuals, copy editing, photo and video, audience, entertainment, and lifestyle. Candidates must have completed at least one internship at a daily news organization other than their college paper. The deadline to apply is November 1.

The Boston Globe is accepting applications for their summer internship. Most interns will work as general assignment reporters in the news department, but others will be hired for the paper’s sports, living and art, and business departments. The internship is full-time for twelve weeks and pays a weekly wage. The deadline to apply is November 1.

The Tampa Bay Times is accepting applications for their summer internship. Interns will work as news reporters, sports reporters, photographers, copy editors, or engagement producers. The internship pays $500 per week, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 1.

-The Sports Journalism Institute is accepting applications for their free, one-week “boot camp” in summer 2021. Attendees will go through a one-week program covering sports events and interviewing athletes, coaches, and prominent sports media figures. After the camp, attendees will be partnered with paid internships. The camp will be held at locations including the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism, Arizona State’s Cronkite School, and the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, FL. The deadline to apply is November 2.

-The Dow Jones News Fund is accepting applications for their paid summer internship program. Interns can apply to any or all of the following programs: data journalism, digital media, business reporting, or multiplatform editing. The fund provides pre-internship training, weekly salaries of at least $450 for a minimum of 10 weeks, and $1,500 scholarships. The deadline to apply is November 9.

The Virginian-Pilot is accepting applications for its summer 2021 internship program. Interns can focus on reporting, audience engagement, data journalism, or videography and photography. The deadline to apply is November 13.

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program. Interns can apply for programs in a number of fields, including photojournalism, business, sports reporting, copy editing, investigative journalism, features, and metro reporting. Interns must be students residing in either Washington or Oregon. Interns will be paid $16.39 per hour, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 13.

-The Los Angeles Times is accepting applications for its paid summer 20201 internship program. Interns will have the opportunity to work in all newsroom departments, including sports, politics, business, fashion, food, foreign, national, metro, local, arts, entertainment, and more. Interns will be paid $17.50 per hour, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 15.

The News & Observer is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship in Raleigh, NC. Interns are assigned an editor and mentor, and they will write stories, shoot photos and videos, and create social media content. Interns will be paid $500 per week, and the internship lasts 10 weeks. The deadline to apply is November 30.

NEW YORK

The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a push notifications editor and an editorial director for the Games section. Candidates for the notifications editor position should have at least three years of experience as a digital news editor. Candidates for the editorial director position should have at least a decade of editorial experience, including in management, and a deep passion for puzzles and the Crossword. 

Bon Appétit is hiring for multiple positions, including an associate food editor and a senior food editor. Candidates for the associate editor position should have at least one year of experience in the culinary field, including restaurants, and one year of experience in food editorial production. Candidates for the senior editor positions should have at least four years of experience in the culinary field, including restaurants, and two years of experience in food editorial production. Both positions may include video appearances (which you should negotiate to be paid for separately!).

The Information is hiring a reporter to cover tech companies’ interactions with Wall Street. The reporter will focus on how the companies go public and how they deal with investors once they are public. Candidates should have knowledge of the banking world and big institutional investors, with a proven track record in breaking news. The position can be based in New York or San Francisco. 

-The Wall Street Journal is hiring an associate producer to join their podcasting team. Candidates should have at least one year of experience working in a daily news environment, a capacity to tell business and markets stories in creative ways, and a deep knowledge of US and global political and economic news.

-ProPublica is hiring for multiple positions, including a deputy editor to help expand their local presence, a research reporter, and a copy editor. Candidates for all positions should be based in New York, but they are willing to consider strong remote candidates. The deadline to apply is October 30 for the deputy editor position, and November 8 for the research reporter position.

The Markup is hiring for multiple positions, including a news editor to oversee their team of reporters and freelancers; a labor reporter to cover the effects of technology on the labor force; and a privacy reporter to cover the erosion of privacy in “just about every aspect of our lives.” The deadline to apply for the news editor position is October 30, and the deadline to apply for the labor and privacy reporter positions is November 15.

WASHINGTON, DC

Stateline, a journalism project by the Pew Charitable Trusts, is hiring two reporters to produce in-depth features and investigations on state policy matters. Candidates should have at least four years of journalism experience and a demonstrated knowledge of state and federal government. One reporter will be based in Texas, and one will be based in either the Midwestern US or in Washington, DC.

STAT, a health and medicine publication, is hiring a reporter for their bureau in Washington, DC. The reporter will cover topics that include the government’s response to COVID-19, drug pricing reform, biomedical research funding and regulation, public health policymaking, and the health sector’s influence in Washington. Previous experience reporting on Congress, the White House, the FDA, HHS, hospitals, or health tech is preferred.

US News and World Report is hiring an editor for their business-to-business-focused Advisors section. The editor will also produce some consumer-focused content. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience, expertise in investing and financial advisory topics, and experience working with business-to-business content or with a financial trade publication. 

TEXAS

Stateline, a journalism project by the Pew Charitable Trusts, is hiring two reporters to produce in-depth features and investigations on state policy matters. Candidates should have at least four years of journalism experience and a demonstrated knowledge of state and federal government. One reporter will be based in Texas, and one will be based in either the Midwestern US or in Washington, DC.

-The Austin Business Journal is hiring a reporter to cover real estate in the city. The reporter will focus on commercial and residential real estate, as well as big-picture issues like affordability. Candidates should have at least three years of journalism experience.

The Information is hiring a reporter to cover tech companies’ interactions with Wall Street. The reporter will focus on how the companies go public and how they deal with investors once they are public. Candidates should have knowledge of the banking world and big institutional investors, with a proven track record in breaking news. The position can be based in New York or San Francisco. 

dot.LA is hiring an LA-based science and technology reporter to focus on the region’s biotech, robotics, and aerospace industries. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience, preferably covering technology, aerospace, or biotech. 

-KPBS is hiring a San Diego-based news producer to create daily news and information segments for their Midday Edition newscast. The producer will pitch stories, book guests, research, conduct pre-interviews, and perform other tasks. The position is remote-friendly, but occasional travel is likely once the pandemic subsides, including trips to and from their Boston headquarters and to other cities for reporting purposes.

Boston.com is hiring a nighttime sports writer to bring their “live game coverage to the next level.” Candidates should have at least two years of experience reporting and writing for a media outlet, preferably covering the region. The position requires working 4 PM to 12 AM shifts from Sunday through Thursday. 

The Boston Globe is hiring for multiple positions in Boston and at their new bureau in Providence, Rhode Island. In Boston, they are hiring a deputy ideas editor for their Opinion team, a deputy metro editor, and a political reporter to cover the State House. In Providence, they are hiring an audience editor, an express reporter, and a general assignment reporter, who will hopefully be able to cover Rhode Island’s rich history of video game-, sushi-, and marinara sauce-related scandals.

The News and Observer is hiring a Raleigh-based managing editor to lead their team of reporters and grow their readership and subscriber base. Candidates should have at least five years of news editing and management experience, and a “zeal for understanding and using readership data to inform the editorial process.” 

The Greenville News is hiring a reporter to cover college athletics recruiting in South Carolina and assist with coverage of Clemson football on an as-needed basis, especially during the season. Candidates should have previous reporting experience and a strong knowledge of high school and college athletics, as well as knowledge of the recruiting process. 

Connect Savannah is hiring an investigative reporter to deliver weekly reports on “highly promotable topics” while also researching and producing deep dive investigations. Candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience, including two years of investigative journalism experience. 

-ProPublica is hiring an Atlanta-based senior editor to hire and oversee six investigative reporters covering Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. Candidates should have a track record of landing revelatory stories about abuses of power, as either an editor or reporter. The deadline to apply is October 30.

CENTRAL

Stateline, a journalism project by the Pew Charitable Trusts, is hiring two reporters to produce in-depth features and investigations on state policy matters. Candidates should have at least four years of journalism experience and a demonstrated knowledge of state and federal government. One reporter will be based in Texas, and one will be based in either the Midwestern US or in Washington, DC.

-ProPublica is hiring multiple reporters to help expand their coverage of Michigan, Wisconsin, and other areas of the Midwest. One reporter may be based in Chicago, while the other jobs will be located throughout the Midwest. Candidates should have experience producing in-depth or investigative stories. -Oregon Public Broadcasting is hiring for multiple Portland-based positions, including a news editor to assign and edit digital and radio stories and an executive editor for their arts and culture team. Candidates should have experience in a daily newsroom environment and be able to work some evenings and weekends. REMOTE-FRIENDLY

Quartz is hiring a deputy email editor to write and edit their Daily Brief email, homepage content, and app notifications, and assist with editing and producing other email projects. Candidates should have experience writing email newsletters. The position requires working from Sunday to Thursday and can be based anywhere in the US. 

-The Jewish Telegraphic Agency is hiring a reporter to add to their coverage of Jewish life across the US. They have a strong preference for candidates who enjoy travelling and are willing to do so when possible. The salary range is $45,000-60,000, and the reporter can be based anywhere in the US. 

Likemind is hiring a commerce editor to pitch, develop, and write product recommendation content, including roundups, reviews, how-to guides, and product-centric trivia questions. Candidates should have experience in commerce writing, ideally for a major publisher, and a working knowledge of email marketing strategies. The position can be based anywhere in the world and comes with a $300 allotment for remote office setup.

The positions are remote-friendly or can be based in their offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, London, or Melbourne.

-Unifrog, an education platform for students, is hiring a UK-based senior content creator to write and edit guides on career advice and other topics, as well as write their Unifrog Gazette newsletter.
