–Compost Magazine is looking for pitches of personal essays, interviews, poems, and fiction and non-fiction pieces on “how [Internet decay] can help new networks flourish.” They ask that, in addition to the time spent on your piece, you also contribute about six hours to the magazine before it launches. –The New York Times is hiring for multiple temporary positions, including two editors for their T Brand Studio branded content team and a staff editor for their Opinion section on a six-month contract. Candidates for the T Brand Studio positions should have at least six years of reporting or editing experience.
–The Balance, a news organization focused on the consumer finance industry, is hiring freelance news reporters and editors based in the US. The rate is $250-$500 per piece for writers, and pay starts at $30 per hour for editors. –CalMatters is hiring at least one news editor on a part-time, full-time, or contract basis. Candidates should have an understanding of diverse communities across California. The position can be based anywhere in the state, but living in Sacramento is preferred.
–NBCOlympics.com is hiring a Stamford-based freelance news desk writer to publish breaking news, event recaps, viral news, and other assigned stories during the Tokyo Olympic Games. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of sports and internet culture. The position will last for one month during the Olympics.
–Eater is hiring a part-time editor to oversee its Philadelphia city site, Eater Philly. Candidates should have a love for restaurants, knowledge of the local dining scene, and some experience in journalism — particularly with breaking daily news, developing sources, covering a beat, and editing copy.
-NATAL is hiring a story editor for the new season of their podcast about Black birthing parents, providers, and advocates who live in rural communities across the US. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest and experience in telling Black stories with dignity and care. The position runs from January to May, and the pay range is $15,000-$20,000.
EVENTS
-Hearst Connecticut Media is hosting a virtual career fair on December 10. The fair will offer an overview of what it’s like to work at Connecticut’s largest news organization. They also offer informational interviews with some of the group’s editors to discuss multiple open positions in reporting and editing.
GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS
-The LA Press Club is accepting applications for its 2021 Foot in the Door Fellowship program. The fellowship will pair five recent college grads with professional journalists to work on securing work opportunities. Fellows will meet once per month for six months with their mentor and receive a $500 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 7.
–High Country News is accepting applications for its climate justice fellowship. Applicants should be print or visual journalists based in the Western United States who are interested in reporting on climate change and environmental justice within the region. Journalists will produce reported stories, analysis pieces, and essays, and visual journalists will produce photo essays, multimedia projects, and videos. Fellows will be paid a $1,187.25 stipend on a bi-weekly basis, which includes a work-from-home allowance.
-Narratively is accepting applications for their fellowship program in collaboration with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Fellows will work with the editorial team to produce content for their online publication and production studio. The fellowship pays a $2,000 stipend, and fellows are expected to work 10 hours per week. Candidates must be NABJ student members. The deadline to apply is December 12.
–Insider, Inc is accepting applications for their fellowship program in collaboration with the NABJ. Fellows will report, write, and edit stories across one of their dozens of beats. Candidates should have some reporting and writing experience. The fellowship pays $18 per hour, and fellows are expected to work around 40 hours per week for six months. Fellows will also receive an additional monthly $1,000 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 14.
–The New York Times is accepting applications to its fellowship program in New York. Fellows can apply to work in a variety of roles, including reporting; photography; arts criticism; data reporting on the Upshot team; editing for the Op-Ed section; editing their digital news designs; editorial design for print; and investigative reporting for their Video department. The deadline to apply for all roles is December 9.
–The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its paid art criticism fellowship. Fellows will work in the Arts in Review section commissioning reviews, researching, fact-checking, and editing content. The internship lasts 10 weeks and may be remote if it is not safe to return to their New York offices by June. The deadline to apply is December 13.
-The American Political Science Association is accepting applications for its nine-month Congressional Fellowship for Journalists. Fellows will serve on a congressional staff to gain hands-on experience in Congress. The fellowship pays a stipend of $54,000 plus a travel allowance. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in writing, reporting, editing, producing, or directing. The deadline to apply is December 16.
-The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute is accepting applications for its 2021 fellowship program. This year’s fellowship projects address the increasing challenges in covering climate change, unpublishing, harassment of marginalized journalists, and other topics. Fellows who choose to work from their headquarters in Columbia, Missouri will receive an $80,000 stipend. Fellows who work from any location around the world or within a US newsroom will receive a $20,000 stipend. The deadline to apply is December 18.
-NPR is accepting applications for their one-year, DC-based Kroc Fellowship. Fellows will receive hands-on training in audio and digital journalism, including writing, reporting, producing, and editing. Applicants must be recent graduates, but previous journalism experience is not required. Fellows are paid a stipend of more than $45,000 and receive benefits, including a paid vacation. Applications are accepted from October 15 to December 31.
-The Sidney Hillman Foundation is accepting applications for its 2021 Hillman Prizes for Journalism. The prize honors excellence in investigative journalism and commentary. Entries must have been published or broadcast in 2020 and been made widely available in the US. Hillman Prize winners will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium. The deadline to apply is January 30.
INTERNSHIPS
-The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association is accepting applications for their paid internship program. Interns will assist reporters from various news organizations at the state Capitol in Harrisburg from mid-May to late July or early August. The internship pays $575 per week, and interns are expected to work five days per week. The deadline to apply is February 1.
–Forbes is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program in Jersey City. Interns will work with an editor to cover business, education, innovation, lifestyle, money, or several other beats throughout the summer. The internship lasts for 10-12 weeks, and interns are expected to work around 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply is December 14.
–Audubon Magazine is accepting applications for its paid, remote winter internship. Interns will pitch and write articles for print and web, and assist with research, story development, and fact-checking. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work up to 35 hours per week for 16 weeks.
-The Emma Bowen Foundation is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program for students of color. Interns in the content track will learn about production, social media, digital media, and broadcast and online journalism. There is no set deadline to apply, but they recommend that students apply as soon as possible.
–The New York Times is accepting applications for their free Student Journalism Institute. The intensive short-term program is for people who are either college students at a historically Black colleges or universities or college students who are also members of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), or the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA). The program will be hosted virtually so that anyone from around the US can participate. The deadline to apply is December 7.
–High Country News is accepting applications for its paid internship program. Interns will develop, report, and write two articles per month about the Western United States, and will work with editors to learn how to perform interviews, frame a story, and more. The internship pays a $600 bi-weekly stipend for interns working remotely from within the Western United States; an additional $125 bi-weekly work-from-home allowance; and a one-time signing bonus of $500 to help with IT equipment. Interns can be based anywhere in the Western region of the US. The deadline to apply for the summer internship is March 15.

–The New York Times is hiring an editor to shape coverage for their consumer health and parenting vertical, Well. Candidates should have at least a decade of experience leading a newsroom and enough health and science knowledge to lead a team of subject-area specialists.
–BuzzFeed is hiring a senior culture editor to lead special projects and edit the work of freelance and staff writers. Candidates should have at least three years of editing experience and experience soliciting and editing essays about culture. The position can be based in either New York or Los Angeles.
–Business Insider is hiring for multiple positions, including an editor to build a finance features team and a reporter to cover jobs and careers. Candidates for the editor position should have experience reporting and editing, and have the leadership skills necessary to guide a team of reporters. Their office is in New York, but both positions could be based outside of New York, depending on the candidate.
–Morning Brew is hiring for multiple positions, including a Marketing Brew editor, Marketing Brew writer, and an executive editor to manage their three B2B verticals: Tech Brew, Marketing Brew, and Retail Brew. All three positions can be based in New York or be done remotely.
–Consumer Reports is hiring a content lead for their digital privacy and security guide, the Security Planner. Candidates should have previous experience managing editorial projects and reporting on digital security and privacy topics for nationally recognized publications.
–CoinDesk is hiring a senior editor to lead the growth of their educational and evergreen content about cryptocurrency and digital assets. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in explanatory journalism, educational content, content marketing, or product reviews.
WASHINGTON, DC
–Politico is hiring for multiple positions, including a deputy editor to help lead its energy team and an editor to lead their coverage of China and author their newsletter on US-China relations, China Watcher. Candidates for the deputy energy editor position should have expert knowledge of the legislative process that produces energy laws and rules. Candidates for the China editor position should preferably be fluent in Mandarin.
–Insider is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior politics feature reporter, senior White House reporter, foreign policy and national security reporter, Department of Justice and courts reporter, economic policy reporter, and an energy, climate change, and environment reporter. The positions are currently remote, but will be based in their Washington bureau in July 2021.
–The Washington Post is hiring an editor to join their subscriptions and engagement team to oversee and improve their newsletters. Candidates should have significant experience creating, writing, or editing newsletters for a news organization.
-The Center for Public Integrity is hiring a data editor to manage their team of journalists and oversee data collection and analysis for their investigative projects. Candidates should have at least five years of data-driven journalism experience, and knowledge of at least one programming language.
–Foreign Policy is hiring a managing editor to oversee their editorial content, operations, personnel, and strategy. Candidates should have at least a decade of experience with both print and digital journalism, and a substantive understanding of current foreign policy issues.
-The Pulitzer Center is hiring for multiple positions for their new Rainforest Investigations Network, including an editorial coordinator and a data journalist. The network will cover stories at the intersection of climate change, corruption, and governance in the world’s three main tropical rainforest regions: Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia. The deadline to apply for both positions is December 10.
TEXAS
–The Texas Tribune is hiring a breaking news reporter to cover biennial sessions of the Texas Legislature, races for state and federal elected offices, and major court cases. Candidates should have at least one year of journalism experience. The position will eventually be based in Austin, but all employees are working remotely until summer 2021. -KERA is hiring a Dallas-based statewide managing editor to develop the editorial vision for The Texas Newsroom, a collaboration between NPR and Texas radio stations. Candidates should have proven reporting, producing, and editing experience, and be able to travel around the state for assignments.

–Lookout Local is hiring a Santa Cruz-based reporter to cover business and technology. Candidates should have rock-solid journalistic judgment, intuition, and taste, and bilingual abilities are a plus.
–The San Francisco Chronicle is hiring for multiple positions, including a sports editor, news assignment editor, and a general assignment reporter. Candidates for all positions should have at least two years of news experience. The positions are currently remote but will require being based in the Bay Area when it is safe to return to the office.
