The Study Hall Opportunities newsletter is a weekly compilation of pitch calls; freelance, part-time, and temporary gigs; events; fellowships, scholarships, awards, and grants; internships; and full-time jobs. It’s written by Chris Erik Thomas, an old man trapped in a young(ish) body, and is released on Wednesdays. Once in a while, we take a day off for mental health breaks and holidays.

STUDY HALL IS HIRING! ★

Study Hall, AKA the publication you’re reading right now, is hiring an editorial operations director to lead our day-to-day editorial work, including commissioning and editing features; editing our newsletters; and expanding our editorial content. We are specifically looking for someone who wants to explore what editorial content can be. That can mean podcasts, Discord, streaming events, and more.

Candidates should have at least one year of editing experience, and experience in the Study Hall community is preferred. The position can be based anywhere in the US. The salary is $60,000 per year, including quarterly revenue sharing, and the director is expected to work 30 hours per week. The deadline to apply to work at this extremely cool organization is July 5.

RESOURCES

Relying solely on, say, the Study Hall Opportunities newsletter to find work is like trying to do the “Y.M.C.A.” dance alone. It’s sad and please put your arms down. Just as that song takes a Village of People to perform, freelancing also takes a village… of resources. There’s no need to feel down, so pick yourself off the ground. It’s fun to read all the R.E.S.O.U.R.C.E.S.

-The Summer Writing Conferences for POC Writers thread by Vanessa Chan is a great list of conferences. It includes details on what is offered, whether the conferences have financial aid, and has inspired other people to respond with additional conferences. Win-win!

-The Case by Case newsletter publishes fully-formed pitches for journalists. Anyone can take, remake, and use their pitches. No strings attached. The newsletter includes suggested publications to pitch to, their favorite pitch of the week, and (just like this section) it also includes journalism and writing resources.

-The NPR Diverse Sources Database links you up with experts from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in the media. Search by state or expertise, and never make an excuse to fill your features with all-white experts again.

-The Rate Sharing database by the Freelance Solidarity Project has a searchable list of publications so you know what rates they’re paying for what kind of content. It’s an essential resource for making sure you get the best rate possible (or skip the stinkers who don’t pay well).
