The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions for their Cooking vertical, including a senior editor, two staff editors, a writer and recipe developer, and two food reporters. All positions require a love of food and culinary knowledge, as well as at least three years of relevant reporting or editing experience. 

-NBC News Digital is hiring for multiple positions, including a data journalist; a national reporter for its general assignments team; a national reporter for its enterprise team; a reporter for NBCBLK, their vertical for Black Americans; a news editor; a politics editor; and a national politics reporter

Insider Inc. is hiring a reporter to cover and review sleep-related products. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of the sleep industry and at least two years of product testing experience with a focus on sleep, but they are open to adjusting this position’s seniority level for the right candidate.

-WNYC is hiring an editor to lead coverage of health and science. Candidates should have an understanding of life in NYC and its surrounding communities, and have experience in both audio and text-based digital journalism. 

-CNBC is hiring for multiple positions for their financing and investing vertical, Grow, including a producer, senior writer, writer, and data journalist. All positions require a knowledge of financial markets, investing, and related terminology. 

-CNBC is also hiring a copy editor for their new one-hour evening news program, The News with Shepard Smith. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in copy editing, and knowledge of financial markets and terminology is preferred. It should also be noted that the CNBC HQ has gourmet soup and shoe shining services, if that’s your thing. 

-Haymarket Media is hiring for multiple positions, including an editor for their physician-centric brand, Medical Bag, and an editor for their Campaign US editorial brand. The Medical Bag editor should have at least five years of experience creating digital content with a portion of that time spent creating health-related content. The Campaign US editor should have enough experience managing an editorial product to be able to direct their content “from soup to nuts.”

WASHINGTON, DC

-States Newsroom, a network of news outlets focused on state politics and policy, is hiring a Washington, DC reporter. The reporter will write weekly trend and feature stories and news reports for multiple states on topics including congressional actions, Supreme Court cases, Cabinet officials, and protests. 

National Geographic is hiring an assistant managing editor for their History and Culture desk. The position requires a broad knowledge of the topic areas at the core of National Geographic. Candidates should have at least a decade of journalism experience, including prior experior leading and building a team. 

-The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists is hiring an investigative reporter. Candidates should have a track record of producing stories that expose abuse and hold the powerful to account. The deadline to apply is August 6. 

-The Washington Post is hiring a researcher to help with The Health 202 and The Energy 202 newsletters. The position requires identifying and synthesizing content on a daily deadline and may include some original reporting. The deadline to apply is August 7.

TEXAS

The Dallas Morning News is hiring for multiple positions, including a photographer; an editor for their Data and Interactives department; and a reporter for their new Education Lab, which will cover educational issues across Texas. The Education Lab position will be funded with a two-year commitment and has an application deadline of July 31.

CALIFORNIA 

BisNow is hiring an LA-based reporter to cover LA’s commercial real estate industry. The position requires writing six articles per week and producing weekly newsletters and daily morning briefs. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in business journalism, and knowledge of commercial real estate is preferred. 

NORTHEAST

-New Hampshire Public Radio is hiring for multiple positions, including a health reporter to examine healthcare systems through the lens of race and equality, a community engagement producer, and a digital news editor. Candidates for all positions should have a background in digital, print, or broadcast journalism. Until it is safe to return to their Concord newsroom, all positions can be temporarily done remotely.

-KCUR 89.3, Kansas City’s NPR affiliate, is hiring a news director to oversee day-to-day news operation and reporting. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in public media or a news organization. 

The Times-Picayune / New Orleans Advocate is hiring a deputy metro editor to lead their afternoon and evening coverage. Candidates should have extensive background in editing copy and supervising reporters, and be prepared to work from approximately 1 pm to 9 pm.

MIDWEST

The New York Times is hiring a campus culture correspondent based in the Midwest to travel regularly to colleges around the country to highlight intellectual and political debates happening on campus. 

-ProPublica is hiring a Chicago-based reporter for their Illinois newsroom. Candidates should have experience producing in-depth or investigative stories, but it is not required. They are considering remote applicants until it is safe to return to their newsroom, but the long-term plan is to have the reporter be based in Chicago.

The Daily Line is hiring a Chicago-based legislative journalist to cover policy and politics throughout Illinois. The position will include producing content for their weekday newsletter, website, and social platforms. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois politics, as well as at least four years of experience covering government at a daily media outlet. 

-Chicago Star Media is hiring an editor for the New Eastside News, Streeterville News, and Westloop News. Candidates should have at least five years of experience as a managing editor or editor of a publication. The position will primarily work out of a home office, but requires weekly in-person meetings at their downtown office.

-The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is hiring a Little Rock-based digital content manager to curate and report for a newsletter aimed at young Arkansans aged 22 to 35. The position will require building the newsletter from the ground up and using their voice to grow the audience. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Findlay and Pocatello.

SOUTHWEST

-Colorado Public Radio is hiring a Denver-based data reporter to create stories for publication online and on the air. Candidates should have journalism experience and be able to use data analysis tools, scripting language, and mapping tools. The job requires working on-call weekend shifts and traveling. 

-KOAT-TV is hiring an Albuquerque-based photographer and editor to cover daily news stories and gather and edit photos and videos for their digital platforms. Candidates should have relevant computer and software experience, and previous newsroom experience is preferred. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are open in Lake Havasu City, Steamboat Springs, and Durango.

NORTHWEST

-KUOW, Seattle’s NPR affiliate, is hiring a supervising producer to seek out new voices to appear on air, plan long-term coverage, and lead the team. Candidates should have at least three years of broadcast journalism experience and familiarity with public radio programming. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are open in Weiser and Provo.

OTHER US-BASED JOBS

-ABC Owned Television Stations (OTV) is hiring for multiple positions in their new 10-person Race and Culture unit, including an executive producer and multiple reporters. All positions require significant reporting experience and sources in the race and culture beats, as well as at least five years of journalism experience. Reporters can be based in Los Angeles, Fresno, and San Francisco, as well as other, non-California OTV station hubs in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, and Raleigh-Durham.

REMOTE-FRIENDLY 

-Consumer Reports is hiring an investigative and enterprise reporter. The reporter will cover marketplace inequities, systemic failures, and biases in areas of health, safety, finance, and privacy. Candidates should have extensive experience producing investigative features, preferably for diverse audiences. 

The Marshall Project is hiring a staff reporter to cover America’s criminal justice system. Candidates should have at least five years of full-time investigative reporting experience and be comfortable working with public records and databases. The publication’s office is in New York, but the location is flexible for this position. 

Insider is hiring a head of newsletters to build a series of daily and weekly newsletters focused on business, politics, and more. The position can be based in their NYC headquarters or be done remotely.

XDA Developers is hiring for multiple positions, including a US news editor and a “deals guru” who can write about how to save money and spot deals. Both positions are full-time and remote, but must be done from the US or Canada. 

 

FREELANCE AND TEMPORARY GIGS

PCMag is hiring a freelance weekend news writer to do three to four stories per day that are 250-300 words each. Candidates should have experience writing consumer tech news for a digital publication. The deadline to apply is August 24.

The Emporia Gazette in Emporia, KS, is hiring a part-time virtual journalist to work remotely covering news in their community. The position requires feature writing, coverage of local government boards, and a curiosity about the community and its people.

-CapRadio, the public media organization in Sacramento, is hiring a morning producer to work part-time overseeing content production for their digital platforms. The position includes managing social media channels, writing, and posting breaking news stories. The position is fully remote, but being in Sacramento is preferred. 

-Global Citizen UK is hiring a contributing editor to recruit and edit contributing writers across the globe on a part-time contract until the end of 2020. The editor will seek out voices from a wide range of communities and identities, and the job is project management-intensive. Candidates should have at least two years of editing experience within a media organization. The position can be done remotely anywhere in North America, Latin America, Africa, Europe, the UK, and Australia. 

WTTW News is hiring Chicago-based freelance reporters to do weekend coverage of topics that include crime, politics, environmental issues, and public health. Reporters are expected to complete two or three stories per weekend. Compensation is provided as a set day rate and not per-story. 

-TAPinto, a network of news sites across New Jersey, is hiring multiple freelance reporters to cover town, government, or school board meetings in towns across Central New Jersey. Candidates must have prior experience covering local government or school board of education meetings and be able to work independently. 

The Philadelphia Tribune, a newspaper focused on the African American community, is hiring multiple freelance reporters. Candidates should have previous experience reporting for college or community newspapers, and they prefer someone who lives in the Philadelphia area. 

-The International Museum of the Horse is hiring five Black, female, and Kentucky-based writers to create content for their new website, the Chronicle of African Americans in the Horse Industry (this isn’t a fever dream, it’s a real thing). The rate for stories and personal profiles is $0.30 per word. The deadline to apply is August 3.

The Root, a magazine centered on the African-American community, is hiring a senior-level editor for temporary editing work. Send resume and clips to [email protected]

Input is hiring multiple remote news writers to cover the following topics: technology and devices; social media; gaming; internet culture and trends; streetwear culture; and design. The position requires writing three to five stories per shift and working with editors on a per-project basis doing essays, investigations, and larger features. Applicants should have at least two years of experience doing reporting and writing. 

Texas Monthly is hiring a freelance writer to contribute to the print magazine and website through the end of December 2020. The position requires writing longform stories ranging from 4,000-7,000 words and occasionally writing shorter web articles. The rate depends on the writer’s availability — it could be a flat monthly fee if they can commit to full-time work, or could be per-story — but their print rate is $1 per word, for context. The deadline to apply is July 31. 

Guide Falls is hiring remote writers to create two guides of 350-400 words per week. Writers should be comfortable finding their own topics and covering assigned topics. Send applications through their web form

Mic is hiring a remote politics writer to work three or four days per week. The job requires writing one or two commentary or analysis pieces on news themes of the day. The rate is $15-30 per hour, depending on the person’s experience. Candidates should have at least three years of writing experience, ideally about politics or news.  

-Climate Nexus is hiring a junior data reporter for BailoutWatch, their new site tracking government efforts to help the fossil fuel industry under the guise of pandemic relief. The position will begin with a four-month contract and can be done remotely. Rates are between $20-$30 per hour, depending on experience. Experience with data-visualization platforms is preferred, but it is not required. 

-L’Atelier is hiring a remote editor to edit and supervise content on emerging technology and virtual domains for their blogs and social media. Candidates should have at least six years of writing experience and two years of experience as an editor. The rate is €55-€80 (about $65-$95) per hour, depending on experience. The contract is for three months with the possibility of extension. 

-Anti-Racism Daily, a daily newsletter, is hiring remote guest editors to contribute. Contributors are paid on either a by-newsletter or hourly part-time basis. Send applications through the web form

gal-dem, a UK publication focused on women and non-binary POC, is hiring a remote opinions and personal essay editor for a six-month contract. The position requires a minimum of three years of journalism experience, and you must be eligible to work in the UK. The deadline to apply is August 14. 

The Local is hiring a freelance journalist in Spain who knows the country inside and out to write content for their website. Send inquiries to [email protected]

XDA Developers is hiring freelance writers to write at least one article per week about the following topics: phones, tablets, and ecosystems; smart home technology; Google Chrome and Chromebooks; and laptops, PCs, and Windows. The position is remote; Western Europe and North America are preferred, but not required. 

 

INTERNSHIPS, GRANTS, AND FELLOWSHIPS

-The Nieman Foundation is now accepting applications for remote visiting fellowships on journalism topics related to racism and public health. The fellowship provides research opportunities and specialized training to individuals. The fellowship provides a weekly stipend of $2,000, which is paid out monthly. The deadline to apply is September 25, but they may begin selecting fellows prior to the deadline. 

-The Alicia Patterson Foundation is accepting applications for the Alicia Patterson fellowship. The fellowship is only open to US citizens who are full-time print journalists or photographers, or to non-US citizens who work full-time for US print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are also welcome to apply. Fellows can receive $40,000 for the full-year stipend and $20,000 for the six-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is October 1.

-The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism is accepting applications for the McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism. The fellowship is for journalists who have ideas related to the global economy, finance, and business, and is open to anyone with at least five years of professional journalism experience. The fellowship offers grants of up to $15,000. The deadline to apply is July 31. 

Spectrum, a news outlet covering autism research, is accepting applications for its fall editorial internship in New York. The internship starts in September, will last three or four months, and pays $18 per hour.

The Dallas Morning News is accepting applications for its Education Lab reporting fellowship. Candidates should have experience reporting and editing at a college or professional level. The position is community funded by foundations and philanthropists and lasts for two years. 

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant. The grant prioritizes stories told in the US, with minimal travel required. Stories should cover systemic, underreported issues like police brutality, the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, and environmental racism. The grant amount is $2,500, and the deadline to apply is July 31.

-Investigative Reporters and Editors, a grassroots nonprofit for investigative reporters, is accepting applications for its Freelance Investigative Reports and Editors project. The grant offers two programs for applicants. The Virtual Newsroom offers everything from open-records coaching to a trained research assistant and may include a grant of up to $12,500; the Editorial Consultancy is more informal, offering an advice consultation they compare to “having a one-hour meeting with a friendly editor.” The deadline to apply is August 3.

-Investigative Reporters and Editors is also accepting applications for its fellowship to attend the IRE20 virtual conference in September. The fellowship includes a complimentary IRE membership or renewal ($25 for students and $70 for pros) and a complimentary conference registration ($50 for students and $175 for pros). There is no deadline to apply, but IRE will stop offering conference fellowships once the funds are exhausted.

The Daily Beast is accepting applications for New York-based interns who will join the Cheat Sheet and breaking news team full-time in the fall. Candidates should have some experience writing breaking news from a previous internship or campus publication. The internship is paid, and the deadline to apply is August 5.

-American Public Media is accepting applications for its Fall 2020 internship in St. Paul, Minnesota. The interns will work for APM Reports, the investigations and documentary unit of American Public Media. The internship is full-time, pays $15 per hour, and will run from September 14 to December 18. The deadline to apply is August 7.

In These Times is accepting applications for their investigative reporting fund. They are interested in investigative stories that expose wrongdoing and examine systemic racism, corporate capture of government, labor practices, native issues, and militarism. The grant is $1 per word for 3,000-4,500 words and covers reporting expenses. Send questions and applications to [email protected] by August 10.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Howard G. Buffett Fund. Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience. Grant amounts vary depending on the proposal and inclusion of a detailed budget. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

-The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is conducting a free webinar on August 13 to share tips on how to use Google tools like Scholar, Alerts, and Trends for freelance journalism. The webinar will run from 3-4:30 pm EST and be conducted by freelance journalist Benet Wilson.

CALLS FOR PITCHES FROM BIPOC WRITERS

Wellness Lounge is looking for pitches from BIPOC writers about the themes of celebration, change, and transformation, or about COVID-19. Their rate is $250 for 800-1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected]

Briarpatch Magazine is looking for pitches from BIPOC about the Canadian North for their Northern Writing Prize. The prize offers $600 CAD (about $445) for a feature article, photo essay, or graphic narrative that examines the politics, culture, environmental issues, or activism present in Canada’s North. The deadline to pitch is September 1, and if you need support crafting a pitch or developing an angle, you can email [email protected] before August 15, 2020 for assistance. 

The Gumbo is looking for pitches from Black women writers about the beginnings of your favorite artists and their careers. The rate is $150 for 750-1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] and [email protected] with “September theme” in the subject line by August 7.

The Gambit is looking for pitches from Black freelancers in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. They want coverage of things that are either affecting or coming out of the Black community, including food, social justice, culture, art, cowboy shit, and more. Send pitches to [email protected]

BestReviews is looking to commission more BIPOC voices for steady, long-term freelance writing and editing positions. Rates start at $100 and the work appears on the publication and in other Tribune Publishing outlets. Send inquiries to @fashionmac

Catapult Magazine is looking for pitches for personal essays from BIPOC writers who have had to return to retail or food service work, or essays that center the customer and service worker dynamic. Rates average $150-$250. Send pitches to [email protected].

-Halfway Books, a project by The Ringer staff writer Shea Serrano, is looking to commission five people to write an essay about a rap album. The rate is $3,000 for 3,000 words and includes a month-long mentorship and access to a professional editor. Send pitches through the web form by August 10.
