Candidates should have at least three years of editorial experience or two years of project management experience, and an understanding of architecture and interior design is a plus. 

-The Council on Foreign Relations is hiring a staff editor for their Foreign Affairs editorial team. Candidates should have at least one year of professional editorial experience and familiarity with online and print journalism. The job will be fully remote through at least the end of 2020. 

Pitchfork is hiring a senior producer of podcasts for The Pitchfork Review. The producer will conceptualize and pitch programming ideas, segments, and show formats. Candidates should have at least four years in content development and podcast, radio, or audio production. 

The Intercept is hiring a senior editor to work with staff reporters and freelancers on in-depth investigations, news stories, and opinion pieces. Candidates should have at least a decade of journalism and editing experience and a track record of publishing groundbreaking journalism.

Bustle is hiring a deputy editor to oversee day-to-day operations of their Entertainment vertical. The editor will lead the team and oversee celebrity profiles, analysis, and industry exclusives. Candidates should have at least five years of experience working in entertainment writing. 

The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including an Opinion editor to run coverage of business, economics and technology; an editorial director to oversee the Games subscription business, a bilingual editorial assistant fluent in Spanish and English for the Opinion department; and an editorial assistant for the Opinion section to support columnists Frank Bruni and Gail Collins. 

-CNN is hiring for multiple positions at its review and recommendation site, CNN Underscored, including a senior writer and an associate lifestyle editor. The lifestyle editor will work in the beauty, fashion, home, and health spaces, and should have at least one year of experience writing content for a major publisher. The senior writer should have at least seven years of experience in writing about tech and electronics. 

Precision Oncology News is hiring a biopharma reporter to cover the rapidly evolving field of molecularly-informed cancer care. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience covering biopharma. The position would start remotely and then be based in downtown Manhattan once it is safe to do so. 

-The American Psychological Association is hiring a managing editor to guide content for their news magazine, Monitor on Psychology, and all other editorial channels. Candidates should have knowledge of science writing and psychology and significant experience in editing and producing print and digital products. 

WASHINGTON, DC

-The Washington Post is hiring for multiple positions, including a visual reporter for their graphics team and a database reporter for the investigative unit. Both positions will not be eligible for remote work once it is safe to return to their newsroom. The deadline to apply is September 4 for the database reporter and September 11 for the visual reporter. 

-NPR is hiring for multiple positions, including an assistant producer for their Embedded podcast and a senior editor to contribute to several shows, including Embedded and Rough Translation. Candidates for both positions should be able to relocate, as the company may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations in the future. 

-ProPublica is hiring an investigative reporter. Candidates should have a track record of aggressive federal government reporting and know how to use data to complement reporting. The position is based in Washington, DC, but they are open to remote work if the fit is right.

TEXAS

-The Dallas Observer is hiring a news editor to lead and manage its reporting team. Candidates should have at least three years of editorial management experience and a firm basis in SEO and social media strategies. 

CALIFORNIA 

The AV Club is hiring a staff writer to work across all sections of the site, producing coverage of pop culture with an emphasis on TV. Candidates should have at least one year of experience writing for a fast-paced publication and a deep knowledge of pop culture across multiple verticals.

The Sacramento Bee is hiring a Black communities reporter to cover healthcare, infrastructure, food deserts, and other issues. Candidates should have some experience reporting and writing for a news publication, and a deep knowledge and appreciation of social justice issues. 

-The Wall Street Journal is hiring a San Francisco-based reporter to cover Tesla, Elon Musk, and the intersection of technology and automobiles in Silicon Valley. Candidates should have at least three years of experience covering a business or finance beat. The deadline to apply is September 15.

-Telemundo is hiring a Sacramento-based content producer to write content for newscasts and digital. Candidates must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish and must be able to speak and read English.

NORTHEAST

NBC Sports is hiring a Stamford-based manager of digital editorial content for their Golf team. The manager will lead the team and write stories about the PGA Tour, LPGA, USGA, and college golf. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience and really fucking love golf.

SOUTHEAST

The Athens Banner-Herald is hiring a sports reporter to join their Georgia sports team. The reporter will cover recruitment for University of Georgia athletics, prominent high school players, and teams in the state.

-The Savannah Morning News is hiring a watchdog and investigations reporter to build stories that hold officials accountable and challenge systems of inequality. Candidates should have at least two years of professional watchdog journalism experience. 

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is hiring two reporters to cover K-12 schools in the metro area. Candidates should have at least five years of professional journalism experience and be comfortable covering school boards and leadership. 

-The North Carolina Justice Center is hiring for multiple Raleigh-based positions, including an investigative reporter and a courts, law, and democracy reporter. Both positions will join the staff of its media project, NC Policy Watch. Candidates should have at least two years of experience reporting for a media outlet or public policy nonprofit.

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Owings Mills, Elkin, Newport, and Fairfax.

CENTRAL

The Advocate is hiring a Baton Rouge-based deputy sports editor to produce a sports section that is comprehensive and entertaining. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in sports news coverage for a newspaper and three years of management experience.

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Mexico (Missouri), Lafayette (Louisiana), Cape Girardeau, Cottage Grove, Huntsville, Hot Springs, and Tell City.

SOUTHWEST

The Arizona Republic is hiring a Phoenix-based data and demographics reporter to scrape websites, build data visualizations, and do cutting-edge storytelling. Candidates should have a track record of using data to drive investigative and enterprise reporting, and have data analysis skills in Excel, SQL, or similar programs.

Westword is hiring a Denver-based news editor to lead and manage its reporting team. Candidates should have at least five years of editorial management experience and a firm basis in SEO and social media strategies.

USA TODAY is hiring a diversity and opportunity reporter to cover how opportunity gaps among white, Black, Latino, Asian, and Indigenous people, along with other groups, evolved across the West. The reporter can be based anywhere in the West, but there is an expectation for a lot of regional reporting and some travel.

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Englewood (Colorado) and Windsor.

NORTHWEST

-KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio, Seattle’s NPR news station, is hiring an editor to develop and produce longform and shortform stories. Candidates should have at least five years of professional broadcast journalism experience and an extensive background in news writing, script editing, and feature production.

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Kalispell, Laramie, and Shoreline.

INTERNATIONAL

-Radio Free Europe is hiring a Prague-based regional director to lead coverage of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Candidates should have significant journalism and editorial experience, and a thorough knowledge of the political, economic, and social climate in the Near East. Relocation costs are covered for those not based in Prague. 

REMOTE-FRIENDLY 

Xtra Magazine, an LGBTQ publication, is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior health editor and a senior culture editor. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in journalism and knowledge of LGBTQ health issues and LGBTQ arts and culture, respectively. Both positions can be based in Toronto or be done remotely.

MIT Technology Review is hiring a senior writer to cover tech ethics, policy, and social issues. Candidates should have prior experience in technology journalism or an ethics and policy beat. The writer should ideally be based in the US or Europe, but they are open to all locations.

-Project Drawdown, a nonprofit dedicated to climate solutions, is hiring for multiple positions, including a lead writer and researcher to work at Drawdown Labs and a manager of storytelling for their new publication, The Drawdown Review. Candidates for both positions can be based anywhere in the US and should have at least three years of experience in climate-relevant fields including climate science, journalism, corporate sustainability, and public policy.

OpenDemocracy is hiring for multiple positions, including a news and features editor and a copy editor. The copy editing position can be either a freelance or contract role. Both positions are remote and open to candidates around the world. The deadline to apply is August 28.

USA TODAY is hiring for multiple positions, including a a national correspondent to cover environmental and health inequities, a reporter to cover political extremism, a national correspondent to cover identity and inclusion, a reporter to cover inequalities in education, a national correspondent to cover criminal justice, a reporter to cover economic opportunity for its Money & Consumer tech team, a reporter to cover diversity and equality in entertainment, an editor to cover how race and equality intersects with sports, and a reporter for the racism and history beat. All positions can be done anywhere in the US.

OTHER US

Honolulu Civil Beat is hiring an investigative editor to help elevate the work of their small staff of reporters. They want a veteran journalist with at least a decade of experience who can motivate, mentor, and manage the newsroom. 

CNN Health is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior editor and a data editor. Candidates for both positions should have at least five years of relevant journalism experience, and can be based out of NY, LA, Atlanta, or Washington, DC. 

BuzzFeed is hiring a news photo editor to pull engaging photo research for news pieces and curate photo stories. Candidates should have at least three years of professional experience, preferably in a newsroom, and have a familiarity with agencies, photo licensing practices, and copyright law. The position can be based in New York, LA, San Francisco, or Washington, DC.

FREELANCE AND TEMPORARY GIGS

Capital and Main is hiring for multiple positions, including a New Mexico oil and gas reporter and a California oil and gas reporter. Both reporters will cover the influence of these industries on the respective states’ climate and environmental policies. The contract starts on a freelance basis but could develop into a part-time or full-time staff position.

CNN Health is hiring for a temporary news assistant to monitor a variety of sources for breaking news and personal stories. Candidates should have at least one year of experience in a news environment, and a health or medical background is a strong plus. The position can be done remotely. 

-Trivia Mafia, a nationwide network of trivia makers, is hiring content creators to write two to four rounds of trivia per week. Candidates should bring new and overlooked perspectives to the job, creating content geared toward 20-somethings, people of color, and other audiences not historically served by trivia nights. The rate is $15-$20 per hour for 5-15 hours of work per week. 

-ProPublica is hiring an assistant editor for a one-year contract on their Audience team. The editor will help develop and execute strategies for their Local Reporting Network of partner newsrooms. Candidates should have an interest in local reporting and news specifically. The role can be done remotely from anywhere within the US. 

-The Oxford American is hiring a podcast producer to craft multiple segments of their Points South podcast, which explores the South through storytelling and song. The position requires 15-20 hours per week from September to June. Candidates should have at least three years of experience producing or editing audio for radio or podcasts. 

-Bucket of Eels Productions is hiring a part-time associate producer for a new series about small, behind-the-scenes stories that shape big cultural moments. The position pays $30 per hour for 25 hours a week and lasts six months. Candidates can work from anywhere within the US. The deadline to apply is August 31. 

INTERNSHIPS, GRANTS, AND FELLOWSHIPS

-The Texas Observer is accepting applications for its digital internship. Interns will help manage social media and newsletters, and complete at least one long-term project. The stipend is $1,500. The deadline to apply is August 26. 

City Bureau is accepting applications for its Civic Reporting Fellowship. Fellows will work in teams to produce a project on a single, big-picture sociopolitical issue facing communities on Chicago’s South and West Sides. The fellowship is paid, lasts 10 weeks, and will not require any in-person assignments or meetings. The deadline to apply is August 28. 

-The Gerontological Society of America is accepting applications for their Journalists in Aging Fellows Program. The program provides a stipend of $1,500 to journalists who cover issues in aging or work for media outlets serving US communities. The stipend covers a training program, and fellows must commit to one short-term story and one long-term, in-depth project. The deadline to apply is September 1.

-Pineapple Street Studios, a podcast company, is accepting applications for two remote, four-month paid internships. The internship will run from October 5 to January 29. Interns should have some basic audio editing experience in Hindenburg, Pro Tools, or another DAW, but it isn’t required. The deadline to apply is September 4. 

-The International Center for Journalists is accepting applications for their Andrew M. Guthrie IJNet Internship program. Interns will assist the International Journalists’ Network staff with writing content and contribute their own writing for publication on IJNet.org. The internship is paid, will require 35 hours per week of work, and lasts three months. The deadline to apply is September 7. 

-The Fund for Investigative Journalism is accepting applications from journalists who want to work on investigative stories that uncover wrongdoing in the public and private sectors. Grants average $5,000, but can go as high as $10,000 to cover expenses and small stipends. Non-US story proposals are accepted, but must come from US-based reporters; have a strong US angle involving American citizens, government or business; and must be published in a US media outlet in English. The deadline to apply is September 14.

-ACES: The Society for Editing is accepting applications for its Richard S. Holden Diversity Fellowship in collaboration with the Dow Jones News Fund. The fellowship awards up to $3,000 to help fellows enroll in established training programs, attend seminars and conferences, or pursue other activities aimed at advancing their careers. The deadline to apply is September 15.

-The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for remote visiting fellowships on journalism topics related to racism and public health. The fellowship provides research opportunities and specialized training to individuals. The fellowship provides a weekly stipend of $2,000, which is paid out monthly. The deadline to apply is September 25, but they may begin selecting fellows prior to the deadline. 

-The Alicia Patterson Foundation is accepting applications for the Alicia Patterson fellowship. The fellowship is only open to US citizens who are full-time print journalists or photographers, or to non-US citizens who work full-time for US print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are also welcome to apply. Fellows can receive $40,000 for the full-year fellowship and $20,000 for the six-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is October 1.

-The Washington Post is accepting applications for its Summer 2021 internship program. Interns can choose from a variety of positions, including reporting, visual journalism, multiplatform editing, audio production, and more. The deadline to apply is October 7. 

The Baltimore Sun is accepting applications for its paid Summer 2021 Mary J. Corey Journalism Internship. Candidates should have extensive journalism experience, either as a student journalist or as an intern in a professional newsroom. Interns will be paid $575 per week and receive a $1,000 housing stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15.

Sports Illustrated is looking for pitches from writers of color for its multicultural sports vertical, En Fuego. They want aspirational human interest stories, especially in regards to Hispanic Heritage Month. Rate is $200 for 800-1,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected]

The Daily Beast is looking for pitches from writers of color for a new series that use data and expert input to imagine how the future would be altered if everyone in the world had internet access. Rate is $1,000 for a 750-1,200 word piece. Send pitches to [email protected]
