FREELANCE AND TEMPORARY GIGS

THE CITY is hiring a New York-based data reporter for a temporary contract that runs through December 2020. The reporter will cover news and investigations related to the city government and help maintain their Coronavirus Tracker. 

Input Magazine is hiring a part-time writer to cover streetwear, design, and internet culture. They want someone “with experience, who knows the space, and most importantly, who isn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers every now and then. :)” 

The Ringer is hiring a part-time copy editor in the Pacific time zone to work from Friday to Sunday. The editor will perform multiple deep copy edits per shift; coordinate copy flow with editors and fact-checkers; and help execute nightly and next-day production of written pieces, audio and video content, and social copy.

-Meredith Publishing is hiring a freelance e-commerce partnerships writer to write shopping articles for Real Simple, People, InStyle, and their other publications. The rate ranges from $25-$45 per hour depending on experience, and writers are expected to work 32 hours per week. The contract lasts for six months with the opportunity to extend.

US News and World Report is hiring freelance technology writers to cover topics that include programming languages, cloud-computing platforms, and data. Candidates should have experience writing about technical topics. 

El Paso Matters is hiring a higher education reporter for a one-year position. Candidates should have at least three years of experience, and fluency in English and Spanish is preferred. Experience covering higher education is a plus, but not required.

Elite Daily is hiring for multiple part-time positions, including a dating writer obsessed with celebrity relationship news and dating culture and an Experiences writer to cover travel, lifestyle, health, and wellness topics. Candidates for both positions should have at least two years of writing or blogging experience. The rate for the dating writer position ranges from $17-$25 per hour, depending on experience. 

The New Republic is hiring a temporary news editor to help with 2020 election coverage. Candidates should have expertise in political analysis, reporting, and opinion, and at least three years of editing experience. The contract position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC. 

DCist is hiring an editor to work full-time for the outlet until December 31, 2020. The editor will help produce news stories about the DC region and supervise staff writers and freelancers. 

PRX is hiring a San Francisco-based digital producer to work on Radiotopia’s Ear Hustle, their nonfiction podcast about prison life produced at San Quentin State Prison. The producer will help manage their social channels, website, and monthly newsletter. The part-time position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week.

-Tidelands Health is hiring freelance health and wellness writers for MyCarolinaLife.com. The writers will be expected to write at least three stories a month that range from 300-400 words. Candidates should have at least three years of journalism experience, including a background in writing about health and wellness. The position is remote, but North Carolina-based writers are encouraged to apply.

-WFYI, the Indianapolis NPR affiliate, is hiring a reporter to cover business and economic trends in the city and across the state. The reporter will work on an 18-month contract. 

-The Energy News Network is hiring a writer for their daily Southeast Energy News email newsletter. Candidates should be located in the Southeast or have direct knowledge of the region. The contract pays $2,500 per month, and “the workload is typically two hours per day but may take longer at first.” The deadline to apply is September 25. 

PublicSource is hiring a Pittsburgh-based reporter to cover how higher education ties into economic opportunity and social mobility in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The reporter will work on a one-year contract that may be extended. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience. 

EVENTS

-The Canadian Journalism Foundation is hosting a free panel on September 24 on biases in coverage of BIPOC. The panelists include Nana aba Duncan, host of CBC Radio One’s Podcast Playlist and Fresh Air; Quartz reporter Karen K. Ho; and CVC Vancouver journalist Angela Sterritt.

-The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting a free online course for journalists that will cover how to investigate key digital assets like social media profiles, websites, and images. The course lasts four weeks and begins on October 5. 

GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS

-The Committee to Protect Journalists is accepting applications for their US Press Freedom Accountability Project. The initiative provides grants that range from $2,000-$5,000 for newsrooms reporting on threats to journalists in the US, with priority given to pieces that can be published in one to three months. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis, and grants will be awarded starting October 1. 

-The Economic Security Project is accepting applications for their Teen Vogue Senior Fellowship to cover racial, gender, and economic justice exclusively for the publication. The fellow will be expected to do at least three reported pieces per month. The salary for the fellowship ranges from $95,000-$105,000 per year, with the possibility of renewal after the first year.

The Boston Globe is accepting applications for its Spotlight Investigative Journalism Fellowship. The fellowship awards up to $100,000 to work on in-depth research and reporting projects. Fellows this year can be individual freelance reporters or newsrooms and multi-reporter teams. The deadline to apply is September 24.

-The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for remote visiting fellowships on journalism topics related to racism and public health. The fellowship provides research opportunities and specialized training to individuals. The fellowship provides a weekly stipend of $2,000, which is paid out monthly. The deadline to apply is September 25, but they may begin selecting fellows prior to the deadline. 

-Election SOS is accepting applications for their Election SOS Fellowship Program. Fellows will participate in virtual training sessions with election reporters and newsroom leaders, monitor social media for voter suppression, and more. The fellowship pays $25 per hour, and fellows are expected to work between eight and 30 hours per week. The deadline to apply is September 29.

-The Association of LGBTQ Journalists is accepting applications for their AARP Freelance Fellowship. The fellowship pays for registration costs to attend the NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists Virtual Convention. Fellows do not need to be a member of NLGJA to apply. The deadline to apply is October 1. 

-The Alicia Patterson Foundation is accepting applications for the Alicia Patterson fellowship. The fellowship is only open to US citizens who are full-time print journalists or photographers, or to non-US citizens who work full-time for US print publications, either in America or abroad. Freelancers are also welcome to apply. Fellows can receive $40,000 for the full-year fellowship and $20,000 for the six-month fellowship. The deadline to apply is October 1.

-Verso Books is accepting applications for their yearlong Verso Fellowship that aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to book publishing. Fellows will work in their Brooklyn office and use flexible remote working and learning as needed. The fellowship will pay $37,500 per year and is open to anyone in the US. The deadline to apply is October 15.

The Texas Tribune is accepting applications for its paid 2021 fellowships in Austin. Fellows can focus on data visuals, engagement, engineering, events, marketing and communications, multimedia, photography, and reporting. There is also a reporting fellowship in Washington, DC. The deadline for the spring 2021 program is October 2, and the deadline for the summer 2021 program is October 30.

-The Scripps Howard Foundation is accepting applications for their yearlong fellowship. Fellows will work in one the following tracks: investigative reporting for video at Newsy; data reporting at Newsy; newsletter reporting at ProPublica; or illustrator and visual journalism at Propublica. The deadline to apply is October 30.

-WBUR is accepting applications for its yearlong, Boston-based Newsroom Fellowship. Fellows will be embedded in a different part of the newsroom every three months to learn about newscasts, live broadcast, digital media, and reporting. The salary for the fellowship is $50,000. The deadline to apply is October 9.

-Investigative Reporters and Editors is accepting applications for their Journalist of Color Investigative Reporting Fellowship. The yearlong program is open to US journalists of color with at least three years of post-college work experience. The deadline to apply is October 12. 

The Economist is accepting applications for two paid fellowships. The fellows will spend six months writing articles about politics and policy in the US. The positions will be based in either their New York or Washington, DC office, and the monthly remuneration is about $3,000. The deadline to apply is October 30.

-Noor Images is accepting applications for its one-year Stanley Greene Legacy Prize and Fellowship. The fellowship aims to support the work and professional aspirations of underrepresented photojournalists from the US. Fellows will receive training, grant-writing support, a $10,000 fellowship prize, and be compensated for travel expenses for field reporting or research up to $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 1.

INTERNSHIPS

The Economist is accepting applications for their paid internship. The internship pays £2,000 per month, and interns can either work remotely or go into the newsroom in London. Interns will primarily work for the digital team, but will be able to offer contributions to other departments, including the print edition. The deadline to apply is September 30.

-The Washington Post is accepting applications for its summer 2021 internship program. Interns can choose from a variety of positions, including reporting, visual journalism, multiplatform editing, audio production, and more. The deadline to apply is October 7. 

-Chicago Public Media is accepting applications for their paid internship at WBEZ Chicago. Interns will learn to write broadcast and digital news, produce multimedia content, record field audio, and edit audio. The internship pays $14 per hour, and interns are expected to work 24 hours per week. The deadline to apply is October 12.

The Oregonian is accepting applications for its paid, 10-week summer internship in Portland. Interns will be part of the news team and have their work showcased online and in print. There is also a three-month Crime and Public Safety News Reporting Fellowship for postgraduate reporters. The fellowship pays $15 per hour, and fellows are expected to work 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply for both programs is October 14. 

The Baltimore Sun is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 Mary J. Corey Journalism Internship. Candidates should have extensive journalism experience, either as a student journalist or as an intern in a professional newsroom. Interns will be paid $575 per week and receive a $1,000 housing stipend. The deadline to apply is October 15.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel is accepting applications for its paid 2021 internship program. Interns can focus on news, entertainment and sports reporting, multimedia and data reporting, or photo and video journalism. Interns must have use of a car, but will be reimbursed for mileage, tolls, and parking. The deadline to apply is October 15.

-The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its US Reporting Internship for summer 2021. The 10-week paid internship program can be based in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Washington, DC. Interns are paid $900 per week. The deadline to apply is October 30.

The Dallas Morning News is accepting applications for its 2021 internship program. Interns will report, write, photograph, and edit stories for publication in print and online under their own bylines. The internship pays $15 per hour, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. The deadline to apply is October 30. 

-The Austin American-Statesman is accepting applications for their Austin-based spring and summer internships. The spring internship pays $8 per hour for up to 180 hours per semester, while the summer internship pays $450 per week for 11 weeks. The deadline to apply for both programs is October 31. 

The Boston Globe is accepting applications for their summer internship. Most interns will work as general assignment reporters in the news department, but others will be hired for the paper’s sports, living and art, and business departments. The internship is full-time for twelve weeks and pays a weekly wage. The deadline to apply is November 1.

The Tampa Bay Times is accepting applications for their summer internship. Interns will work as news reporters, sports reporters, photographers, copy editors, or engagement producers. The internship pays $500 per week, and interns are expected to work 40 hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 1.

The Virginian-Pilot is accepting applications for its summer 2021 internship program. Interns can focus on reporting, audience engagement, data journalism, or videography and photography. The deadline to apply is November 13.

JOBS 

NEW YORK

-The New York Times is hiring an editor to lead the health and science coverage at its Opinion section, especially in regards to shaping the debate over how to handle the coronavirus pandemic. Candidates should have at least five years of editing experience. 

Business Insider is hiring a reporter to expand their coverage of the energy industry, ranging from oil to renewables. Candidates should have experience covering the energy industry and a track record of breaking news. 

Barron’s is hiring an associate editor to cover retirement issues, diversity issues, China, and other emerging markets, and to help oversee coverage of Asia. Candidates should have at least a decade of experience covering emerging markets, companies, and retirement. 

-The Committee to Protect Journalists is hiring a global tech researcher to report on technology and press freedom around the world. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience on subjects that include digital rights, internet shutdowns, and online censorship.

-ProPublica is hiring a research editor to lead the research team. Candidates should have experience working in a newsroom setting, preferably in investigations, and experience evaluating and negotiating contracts for databases. The position can be based in their New York office or be done remotely. The deadline to apply is September 25.

WASHINGTON, DC

-The Washington Post is hiring for multiple positions at their women-centric vertical, The Lily, including a deputy editor and a rapid-response reporter. The editor will work with staff reporters on news and longer pieces across their social media platforms, and the reporter will write at least five news or trend pieces a week. The deadline to apply is September 25 for the editor position and September 30 for the reporting position.

Education Week is hiring an assistant managing editor to plan coverage and guide their reporting on issues of equity, inclusion, racial and social justice in K-12 education. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in a news, media, information, or education organization, and extensive knowledge of the field of K-12 education. 

CALIFORNIA 

-KCLU Public Radio is hiring a Los Angeles-based producer and reporter to expand their local reporting, on the air and on their digital platforms. Candidates should have on-air experience and a passion for public radio’s distinctive approach to storytelling. 

Federal Computer Week is hiring a reporter to take on the cybersecurity beat. The reporter will cover news of hacks and data breaches affecting federal agencies, and federal cybersecurity law and policy. Candidates should have at least two years of experience reporting and writing for a print or online news publication.

-Bay Area News Group is hiring a San Jose-based investigative reporter to join The Mercury News and the East Bay Times. Candidates should “eat data for breakfast,” be on a “first-name basis with people who handle public records requests,” and have at least three years of journalism experience.

NORTHEAST

PhillyVoice is hiring a web curator for their news, culture, health, and sports departments. The curator will contextualize and comment on articles being linked to from around the web. Curated stories can be local news that resonates more broadly or national stories that resonate locally. 

-WBUR is hiring a Boston-based investigative reporter to join their four-person investigative team and collaborate with ProPublica. Candidates should have at least five years of experience in investigative journalism and a deep knowledge of state and federal public records laws. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are open in Hartford, Portsmouth, and Allentown.

SOUTHEAST

-The Maryland Daily Record is hiring a Baltimore-based reporter to cover the state’s business community. The reporter will dig into economic development trends, entrepreneurship, innovation, nonprofits, and how state and local policy-making affect business practices. 

The Daily Memphian is hiring an enterprise and investigative reporter to focus on stories that explain, analyze, and hold leaders accountable. Candidates should have previous reporting experience.

The Anderson Independent-Mail is hiring for multiple positions, including a government and education reporter and a breaking news and community reporter. Candidates for both positions should have at least a year of reporting experience. 

-The Nashville Business Journal is hiring a reporter to cover commercial real estate. Candidates should have at least two years of journalism experience and knowledge of business principles. 

-Local reporter and editor positions are also open in Savannah, Frederick, Daytona Beach, Strasburg, and Sevierville.

CENTRAL

-The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is hiring a Little Rock-based breaking news reporter for their digital news site, ArkansasOnline. Candidates should have at least one year of experience writing news and feature stories. 

-Louisville Public Media is hiring a news director to lead their reporters and editors and set the vision for newsroom coverage. Candidates should have at least a decade of professional journalism experience, including experience as an editor or supervising producer.

NORTHWEST

The Idaho Statesman is hiring a Boise-based reporter to cover accountability issues in state government and congressional politics. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience, with demonstrated success in political accountability or watchdog work.

-Oregon Public Broadcasting is hiring for multiple Portland-based positions, including a news editor to assign and edit digital and radio stories and an executive editor for their arts and culture team. Candidates should have experience in a daily newsroom environment and be able to work some evenings and weekends. The deadline to apply is October 23 for the news editor position and October 30 for the executive editor position.

Some domestic and international (but not interstellar) travel will be required once in-person events resume.

Politico EU is hiring for multiple Paris-based positions, including a news editor and two politics reporters. The editor and reporters will help cover EU and French politics. Candidates for all positions must have professional fluency in French and English. The deadline to apply for the reporting positions is October 18, and is October 19 for the editor position. 

Hong Kong Free Press is hiring an editor to edit, rewrite, polish, and fact-check up to six news stories per day. Candidates must have at least two years of experience in an editorial role at a Hong Kong news outlet, be fluent in English, and have the right to work in Hong Kong.
