FREELANCE, PART-TIME, AND TEMPORARY JOBS
–InvestigateWest is hiring a Seattle-based deputy editor to work with their team of freelance reporters, photographers, and visual artists on investigative and explanatory stories. Candidates should have some writing and editing experience. The salary is $32,500 per year, and the editor is expected to work 20 hours per week. The position will begin remotely.
–The Beacon is hiring for multiple freelance positions at The Kansas City Beacon and The Wichita Beacon, including writing, photography, and fact-checking. They are specifically looking for journalists who can produce reported stories and series on the government, economics, education, health care, civic engagement, and the environment.
–The Take is hiring a freelance script editor to oversee and edit scripts for video essays. Candidates should have at least five years of writing and editing experience with video essays and a “robust knowledge of film, TV, and pop culture.” The deadline to apply is January 14.
EVENTS
-The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma is hosting a free 90-minute training webinar on how to cover riots and civil unrest on January 15. The training course will focus on risk assessment, situational awareness, and practical strategies and tactics for preparing to cover civil disturbances.
-The Chicago Headline Club is hosting a free training course on mental health and trauma in journalism on January 29. The course will include best psychological practices for interviewing survivors, how to manage self-care on the job, and best practices within newsrooms.
-The National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Los Angeles chapter is hosting a virtual career fair on February 6. The fair will include several senior-level journalists explaining how to organize your work materials, and how to write resumes and cover letters. You can sign up for a one-on-one, 10-minute conversation with a mentor who will review your materials by emailing [email protected] with “Resume Review” in the subject line by January 23.
GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND FELLOWSHIPS
-The Fund for Investigative Journalism is accepting applications for grants of up to $10,000 for stories that break new ground and uncover wrongdoing in the public or private sectors. The grants are paid directly to investigative reporters or media outlets for expenses related to their investigations. They are also holding open office hours on Zoom every Friday at 12 PM EST to answer questions about the application process. The deadline to apply is February 8.
-The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is accepting applications for its Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship program. The fellowship provides ten grants of $10,000 to journalists who want to report longform print and audio stories on agriculture, nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, and other food systems. They prefer US-focused stories, but will also consider international stories with a strong US angle or connection. The deadline to apply is March 15.
–The Chronicle of Higher Education is accepting applications for its one-year reporting fellowship in Washington, DC. The fellow will work as a general-assignment reporter covering issues that include race, student activism, and finance. The fellowship pays $40,000 per year with benefits.
–Spotlight New Mexico is accepting applications for its Santa Fe-based Rob Dean Fellowship program. Fellows will support staff reporters and editors on health, criminal justice, tribal affairs, and education stories. Depending on experience, they may also conduct their own reporting. The fellowship pays a “Santa Fe living wage,” which is $12.10 per hour as of March 2020. The deadline to apply is March 1.
–The Texas Observer is accepting applications for its summer editorial fellowship. The program is designed to open up working opportunities for those whose economic circumstances might otherwise limit their ability to pursue a career in investigative journalism. The fellowship pays an $8,100 stipend, and fellows should be based in Texas during the program. The deadline to apply is January 29.
–Prevention Magazine is accepting applications for its paid editorial fellowship. Fellows will write a weekly walking-focused newsletter, interview experts, and write health and wellness articles. The fellowship provides a company computer, pays $15 per hour, and fellows are expected to work 35 hours per week.
-Global Citizen is accepting applications for their paid Rising Professionals Fellowship program. Fellows will research, pitch, and write content for GlobalCitizen.org. The fellowship is remote, but candidates based in New York or on the East Coast are preferred. The fellowship pays $16.50 per hour, and fellows are expected to work 40 hours per week for six months.
-The Sidney Hillman Foundation is accepting applications for its 2021 Hillman Prizes for Journalism. The prize honors excellence in investigative journalism and commentary. Entries must have been published or broadcast in 2020 and been made widely available in the US. Hillman Prize winners will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium. The deadline to apply is January 30.
–Report for America is hiring for over 300 reporting positions at newsrooms across the US. For 2021, the program doubled the number of host newsrooms owned by people of color, and more than one third of the beats cover communities of color. The program offers a two-year contract (with an option for three years), and candidates with all levels of experience can apply. They are also piloting a small “experienced corps” for mid- to late-career journalists with eight or more years of experience. The deadline to apply is January 31.
–Forbes is accepting applications for their paid business journalism fellowship for students at historically Black colleges and universities. Fellows will be assigned to a beat and work with a mentoring editor from June to August and, as a final project, will submit an original piece of business journalism in the fall. The deadline to apply is February 15.
–Type Investigations is accepting applications for their Ida B. Wells Fellowship. The fellowship aims to help reporters complete their first major work of investigative reporting with a $20,000 award and editorial guidance from one of their editors. Fellows will also receive funds to cover travel, other reporting costs, and costs associated with attending their annual Investigative Reporters and Editors conference. The deadline to apply is March 15.
INTERNSHIPS
–Wirecutter is accepting applications for its paid spring 2021 internship program. Interns will contribute to editorial events, generate ideas on how to improve our editorial processes, and take ownership of projects. The internship can be done remotely and requires working 20 hours per week. There is no deadline given for applications, but the internship begins on February 1.
-The Emma Bowen Foundation is accepting applications for its paid summer 2021 internship program for students of color. Interns in the content track will learn about production, social media, digital media, and broadcast and online journalism. There is no set deadline to apply, but they recommend that students apply as soon as possible.
-The Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association is accepting applications for their paid internship program. Interns will assist reporters from various news organizations at the state Capitol in Harrisburg from mid-May to late July or early August. The internship pays $575 per week, and interns are expected to work five days per week. The deadline to apply is February 1.
–High Country News is accepting applications for their paid internship program. Interns will develop, report, and write two articles per month about the Western United States, and will work with editors to learn how to perform interviews, frame a story, and more. The internship pays a $600 bi-weekly stipend for interns working remotely from within the Western United States; an additional $125 bi-weekly work-from-home allowance; and a one-time signing bonus of $500 to help with IT equipment. Interns can be based anywhere in the Western region of the US. The deadline to apply for the summer internship is March 15.
-The Oxford American is accepting applications for their paid Jeff Baskin Editorial Internship program. Interns will evaluate manuscript submissions, write content for their website, and fact-check and proofread stories. The internship can be full-time or part-time and offers a $2,500 stipend. The deadline to apply for their summer program is April 15.

NEW YORK
–Billboard is hiring for multiple positions, including a copy editor, two reporters to cover hip hop, a bilingual staff writer and social media manager to cover Latin music, and a staff writer to cover music award shows. All positions will begin remotely, and when it is safe to return to the offices, the hip hop reporters and awards staff writer positions can be based in either New York or LA, while the copy editor and Latin staff writer positions will be based in New York.
–The New Republic is hiring a staff writer for their inequality desk, Sold Short. Candidates should have some journalism experience and be prepared to cover downward mobility, the excesses of the one percent, and unaccountable and violent systems of inequality. The position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.
WASHINGTON, DC
–Politico is hiring a reporter to helm a new twice-weekly newsletter on how institutions, policies, and news coverage are shaped by race and identity. Candidates should have some political reporting experience and a nuanced understanding of the role race and identity has played in our country’s founding, culture, governing, and policy.
–The New Republic is hiring a staff writer for their inequality desk, Sold Short. Candidates should have some journalism experience and be prepared to cover downward mobility, the excesses of the one percent, and unaccountable and violent systems of inequality. The position can be based in either New York or Washington, DC.
–E&E News is hiring an international climate reporter to identify clean energy and climate trends around the world. Candidates should be prepared to travel and to develop sources in the State Department, UN, and foreign capitals.
–Chemical and Engineering News is hiring an associate editor to join its content partnerships team. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in science journalism, and editing experience is strongly preferred.
–The Chronicle of Philanthropy is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior reporter and a senior editor. Both positions are part of a new Associated Press partnership to cover the $6 trillion nonprofit world. Candidates for the senior reporter position should have at least five years of journalism experience, and the senior editor should have at least a decade of journalism experience.
–The Chronicle of Higher Education is hiring a staff reporter to explain how technology is transforming higher education. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience, including experience covering either technology or higher education.
–The Connecticut Mirror is hiring a reporter to cover how emerging legislation and Biden administration regulations are likely to impact Connecticut and its economy. Candidates should have at least five years of experience reporting on federal policy. The position can be based in either Connecticut or Washington, DC, but will require travel to both locations.
–The Associated Press is hiring a Washington, DC-based reporter to cover water regulatory and policy developments west of the Mississippi. Candidates should have a demonstrated history of successful beat reporting on government agencies, the environment, science, or health. The deadline to apply is January 22.

-The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hiring a Los Angeles-based editor to research and write media for their blog, website, press releases, and newsletters. Candidates should have at least two years of writing, researching, and editing experience.
–Billboard is hiring for multiple positions, including two reporters to cover hip hop and a staff writer to cover music award shows. Both positions will begin remotely, but will need to be based in either New York or Los Angeles when it is safe to return to the offices.
–The Planetary Society is hiring a Pasadena-based associate editor to produce resource pages, explainer articles, and other stories. Candidates should have several years of professional science writing experience.
–Inewsource is hiring a San Diego-based managing editor to lead their reporting team and craft their editorial strategy. Candidates should have a track record of editing or reporting stories and experience navigating open records laws. The starting salary ranges from $90,000-$110,000.

–The Connecticut Mirror is hiring a reporter to cover how emerging legislation and Biden administration regulations are likely to impact Connecticut and its economy. Candidates should have at least five years of experience reporting on federal policy. The position can be based in either Connecticut or Washington, DC, but will require travel to both locations.
–Nieman Reports is hiring a Cambridge-based senior editor to commission and edit ambitious feature stories, editorial packages, and opinion columns. Candidates must have at least five years of experience as an editor in digital and print media, including managing the print production process.
SOUTHEAST
–Billboard is hiring a Nashville-based staff writer to cover the country music market. Candidates should have at least one year of experience covering country music, and should be “knowledgeable not only about current acts but have a sense of [country music] history.” The position will begin remotely, but will be based in Nashville when it is safe to return to the office.
CENTRAL
–Crain’s Chicago Business is hiring a copy editor for their print and digital production team. Candidates should have at least five years of copy editing experience and a familiarity with Chicago business and political news.
–The Kansas City Beacon is hiring for multiple positions, including a data reporter to cover local and state education issues and a data reporter to cover the local government and other city institutions. Candidates for both positions can come from any experience level.
–The Wichita Beacon is hiring for multiple positions, including a bilingual reporter to cover the state’s Latino community, a data reporter to do watchdog reporting on local government agencies and jurisdictions, and a data reporter to cover local and state education issues. –Mississippi Today is hiring a reporter to write about economic issues, including economic development and the workforce. Candidates should have some experience covering business or economic development issues. The position can be based anywhere in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region.

SOUTHWEST
–Spotlight New Mexico is hiring for multiple Santa Fe-based positions, including an investigative reporter to focus on education and an investigative reporter to focus on the environment. Candidates for both positions should have at least two years of journalism experience, and experience with public records is strongly preferred. The deadline to apply for both positions is February 1.
–The Associated Press is hiring a Denver-based visual journalist to cover water quality, erosion, development, and climate change in the Western US and nationwide. Candidates should have a demonstrated history of visual journalism and be able to travel along the Colorado River and throughout the Western US. The deadline to apply is January 17.
REMOTE-FRIENDLY
–Defector Media is hiring multiple staff writers to contribute regularly to the site through “stories, short blogs, or anything in between.” Staff writers won’t have to cover specific beats or have a work quota, but will need to contribute to the site regularly. Candidates should have at least two years of experience writing for a digital or print publication. The starting salary is $50,000 and includes unlimited paid time off.
–The 19th is hiring a breaking news editor to assign, write, and edit breaking news stories. Candidates should have at least three years of newsroom experience and at least one year of experience editing breaking news stories. The starting salary is $80,000. The deadline to apply is January 31.
–Mic is hiring a culture editor to lead its music, movies, books, style, online culture, and television coverage. Candidates should have at least five years of writing, editing, or reporting experience, and some experience assigning and editing original reporting, news, and features.
