Candidates should have at least two years of experience at a design/lifestyle brand or media publisher. The salary range is $65,000-$84,000. No application deadline info was given for this role. 

NEW: New York Focus (who newly unionized) is hiring an editor to help lead accountability coverage of New York state government. Candidates should have superb writing skills and closely follow New York politics. The salary range is $70,000-$75,000. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 23

NEW: The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a staff editor for the visual teams and a senior editor to lead and edit the Matter of Opinion podcast team. Candidates should have at least four years of relevant experience for the staff editor role, and at least seven for the senior editor role.  The staff editor role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The Associated Press is hiring for multiple positions, including a newsletter and franchise editor and an AP News live blog news editor. Candidates for both positions should have at least three years of editing or reporting experience. The salary is $85,000 for the newsletter editor and $98,000-$108,000 for the news editor, Both positions can be based in New York or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply for both roles is October 31. 

NORTHEAST

NEW: New York Focus (who newly unionized) is hiring an Albany-based state government reporter “determined to expose how decisions in Albany are made.” Candidates should have some reporting experience, including time spent “poring over financial disclosures, bombarding agencies with records requests, and scrutinizing the gaps in official accounts.” The salary range is $65,000-$80,000. They are considering applications on a rolling basis.  

NEW: The Buffalo News is hiring a Buffalo, NY-based reporter to cover climate and environmental issues within the region. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience, and a “background in environmental science or meteorology [is] a plus.” The salary range is $52,560-$67,488. NEW: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is hiring a data journalist to cover politics throughout the state, with a focus on the 2024 elections. Candidates should have at least four years of relevant experience, including some experience using SQL for data analysis and covering elections and polling data. WASHINGTON, DC

NEW: The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a senior staff editor to work nights from Sunday through Thursday, and a news assistant to answer phones, keep the daily Washington schedule, fact-check copy, and other tasks. Both positions are represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The salary range for the senior staff editor is $120,126.82-$125,000 and the salary for the news assistant is $65,000. CENTRAL

NEW: Minnesota Public Radio is hiring for multiple positions, including a general assignment reporter to produce newscasts and longer form stories, and a politics reporter to cover “politics, campaigns, and government from the Minnesota Capitol to Washington DC.” Candidates for both positions should have at least five years of journalism experience. The pay range for both positions is $33.10-$39.72 per hour. No application deadline was given for these roles.

NEW: The Illinois Answers Project is hiring an investigative reporter to join its new state investigative and solutions team. Candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience, including some familiarity with Illinois public records laws. The salary is $75,000 “but is negotiable based on experience” and the position is represented by SAG-AFTRA. The deadline to apply is December 4. 

NEW: States Newsroom is hiring a national editor to oversee the editorial content and of its group of state news organizations, including websites, social media platforms, and newsletters. Candidates should have at least a decade of reporting and editing experience. The position can be based within the Midwest or “elsewhere if you are willing to work a schedule that corresponds with the workday in Central, Mountain, or Pacific time.” The minimum salary is $95,000. No application deadline was given for this role. 

TEXAS

NEW: NPR is hiring a correspondent to “cover immigration from a base in Texas.” Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish, have expertise in policy, regulation, and enforcement, and be able to “travel regularly to the US/Mexico border and beyond.” The salary range is $120,000-$145,000 and the position is covered by SAG-AFTRA. No application deadline was given for this role.

NEW: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is hiring a Fort Worth-based accountability reporter to “reveal what others want to hide and to hold powerful people, agencies and businesses in account for what they do.” Two years of newsroom experience and fluency in Spanish and English are preferred, but not required. The salary wasn’t given, but was previously $54,000 (so ask for more than that). No application deadline was given for this role.

NEW: The Dallas Morning News is hiring for multiple positions, including a city reporter to cover the Dallas and Dallas County governments, a breaking news reporter, an audience journalist, and an Austin-based political reporter to cover statewide stories. Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required, for all positions. No salary or application deadline info was given for these roles.

CALIFORNIA

NEW: The Los Angeles Times is hiring a journalist to join its Data and Graphics department and take responsibility for one of three focus areas: “web data visualization and graphics, newsroom application development, or reporting using data analysis.” Candidates should have at least one year of journalism experience. “Occasional night and weekend work is required.” The salary range is $62,338-$104,550. NEW: LAist is hiring a social media associate producer to write and produce social media and newsletter content. Candidates must be able to work some weekend days and should have at least two years of production, editorial, or other relevant experience, including some “experience building newsletter and social media audiences.” The pay rate ranges from $28.85-$30.29 per hour. NEW: NBC News Digital is hiring an editor to work with enterprise editors on investigative projects and other stories. The Hechinger Report is hiring an executive editor to lead its newsroom’s coverage of education. Candidates should have at least five years of leadership experience. The salary is $150,000. The position can be remote but “preference will be given to candidates in the New York City area” and they are “exploring a preference for Virginia and D.C.” The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 22

The 19th is hiring a managing editor to supervise its team of editors, reporters, and producers, including managing its editorial calendar. Candidates should have at least a decade of newsroom experience, including “at least five years of full-time experience managing journalists and editing a variety of story formats.” The salary range is $160,000-$180,000. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 23

The Associated Press is hiring a reporter to cover public health on its Health & Science team. Candidates should have at least four years of reporting or editing experience. The salary range is $66,657-$80,714 and the position is covered by the News Media Guild. The deadline to apply is next Thursday, October 26.

Marketplace is hiring a Producer I or Producer II to join its Podcasts team to help book, edit, and research for its suite of podcasts. Candidates for the Producer I role should have at least five years of journalism, writing, reporting, and producing experience (or six years for the Producer II role). The salary range is $38.46-$46.15 per hour for Producer I and $42.31-$50.77 for Producer II. The position can be remote or based in Los Angeles. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -The Library of Africa and the African Diaspora is accepting applications for its 2024 LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency under the theme: “What is Africa to me?” The residency program is aimed at writers “from and/or based in Africa, the Caribbean, North America, South America, and Europe whose work engages with issues concerning Africa and/or the Diaspora, specifically, The Black Atlantic.” Applicants must be able to stay at the Library in Ghana for four weeks. The program provides $600 to cover travel costs to and from Ghana and a $500 stipend. The deadline to apply is October 29. 

-California Humanities is accepting applications for its California Documentary Project (CDP) grant. The program provides support for “film, audio, or digital media projects that document California subjects and issues.” Funding is available in two categories: research and development grants of up to $15,000 and production grants of up to $50,000. The deadline to apply is November 1.

Narratively is accepting submissions for its 2023 Memoir Prize. The contest is for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives [of 2,000-7,000 words] from unique and overlooked points of view.” The grand prize is $3,000 and two finalists will receive $1,000 each. “Narratively editors will work with the Finalists to potentially adapt their stories into larger projects in different mediums (TV, film, podcasts, etc.).” The entry fee is $20 and the deadline to submit is November 30.

-The Overseas Press Club Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholar Awards. The program is aimed to support “graduate and undergraduate students at North American colleges and universities or American students studying abroad.” “Winners receive either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work or a $4,000 fellowship to be used to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organization.” The deadline to apply is December 1.

NPR is accepting submissions for its College Podcast Challenge scholarship. The contest requires that students “create a podcast on any topic they wish to explore,” which can take the form of “an interview, narrative story, or even investigative reporting” and be done “by yourself, with a friend, or with your entire class.” The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, while the ten finalists will receive $500 each. The contest is open “to students of all ages pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who have already graduated earlier in 2023.” The deadline to submit is January 5.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no deadline to apply; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: The Open Notebook is accepting applications for its 2024 Early-Career Fellowship Program for science journalists. Fellows will “work with a mentor to plan, report, and write articles” on the editorial team. The fellowship is remote, includes a stipend of $6,000, and is part time for ten months. THe deadline to apply is October 31. 

NEW: Democracy Now is accepting applications for its one-year Video News Production Fellowship in New York. The program aims to “provide support and mentorship to underrepresented early-career journalists,” including “BIPOC, people with disabilities, and gender nonconforming people.” Applicants should have at least three years of shooting and editing experience. The salary is $62,400. The deadline to apply is November 1.

NEW: High Country News is accepting applications for its six-month 2024 News Fellowship. Two fellows will contribute to research and fact-checking, and produce reported stories, analysis, essays, and other content. The program pays a bi-weekly stipend of  $1,640.05, “as well as a work-from-home allowance of $46.15 bi-weekly and a one-time signing bonus of $1,000.” The position can be remote within the Western US. The deadline to apply is November 3. 

NEW: The Paris Review is accepting applications for its six-month editorial internship in New York. Two interns will “assist with every step of the magazine’s production, particularly with fact-checking.” The program pays $20 per hour, with the option to enroll in health insurance, and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is November 15. 

NEW: The Nation is accepting applications for its six-month Victor S. Navasky Internship Program in New York. Interns will pitch and write articles, learn about source confidentiality and fact-checking, and other tasks. There are five editorial internship slots and one business internship, “focused entirely on the publishing process.” The internship pays $18 per hour ($630 per week), and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week. The deadline to apply is November 19. 

NEW: The New York Times is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Fellowship in New York. Prospective fellows can apply for the following tracks: graphics, photographer, Upshot data reporter, reporting (multiple beats to choose from), Opinion photo editor, Visual Investigations reporter, audience producer, audience, Opinion international editor, digital news designer, and print editorial designer. All fellowship tracks have a salary of $79,214.76 and are represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The deadline to apply is December 1.

-Penguin Random House is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into multiple tracks, including audio production, publicity (adult), editorial (children’s), editorial (adult), marketing (adult and children’s), and editorial production. The internship is fully remote, pays $20 per hour, and interns are expected to work 28 hours per week. The deadline to apply is TOMORROW, October 20

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its nine-month Gwen Ifill Mentorship Program. The program provides mentorship to women, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming journalists from underrepresented backgrounds through pairing with senior media professionals. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 22.

The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its Summer 2024 US Reporting Internship. Interns can be based in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, and will work in specifics beats depending on location. The rate is $28.57 per hour for NY-based interns, but will vary based on location. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 23.

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into the following tracks: news producer, metro reporter, business reporter, features, copy editing, graphics, and photojournalism. The internship pays $18.69 per hour and interns will work full-time. There will be an info session on October 6 at 1PM PST. The deadline to apply is November 3. 

Insider is accepting applications for its Personal Finance Editorial Fellowship. The fellow will “assist with updates to [their] existing coverage, with a focus on banking content.” Applicants should have “some knowledge of or interest in learning about credit.” The fellowship is remote within the US, the rate is $20 per hour, and the fellow is required to work 40 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is November 4.

-Johns Hopkins University is accepting applications for its Good Science Project-JHU MA in Science Writing Fellowship. The program “aims to improve science journalism and science itself by providing [four] $5,000 reporting grants for feature-length magazine articles on the funding and practice of science in the United States.The articles “must be completed within six months of receiving a grant, regardless of publication status, and should be at least 3,000 words long.” The deadline to apply is November 5.

-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The deadline to apply is January 7.

-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee and the deadline to apply is January 8.
