Anna Selle was paid $400 to review Darryl DeAngelo Terrell’s first solo exhibition in New York City for Testudo. Earlier this year, she “also worked with Testudo on a review of two photo-based exhibitions at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and was paid the same rate. The editorial team is super responsive and easy to work with, and they pay half the rate on story acceptance and the other half on completion.”

Candidates should have strong knowledge of consumer trends. No salary or application deadline info was given for this role. 

NEW: The Independent is hiring multiple SEO freelancers to “produce high quality articles on a range of e-commerce trending and evergreen topics.” Candidates should have some experience creating and executing content trees, and “technical SEO knowledge is a bonus but not required.” The position can be remote or hybrid from their office in London or New York. No salary or application deadline info was given for this role. 

ProPublica is hiring a temporary audience editor to “write and edit concise, compelling headlines and decks for stories, explainers, impact follow-ups, and more.” Candidates should have some “experience creating social content and running social platforms.” The rate is $45 per hour and the role requires working 15-20 hours per week. There is no deadline to apply but the position is expected to run from mid-October through December, so apply ASAP

The Latinx Project is hiring a deputy editor/researcher to oversee the editorial process for its digital publication Intervenxions. Candidates should have some editing experience and knowledge of Latinx interdisciplinary studies. The rate ranges from $35-$40 and requires working 10-12 hours per week. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 16.

NEW YORK CITY

NEW: The Juggernaut is hiring for multiple positions, including a general staff writer, a business and tech staff writer, a staff editor, and an executive editor. Candidates should have a few years of relevant experience. The salaries are $65,000 for the staff writers, $75,000 for the staff editor, and $85,000 for the executive editor. No application deadline info was given for these roles.

NEW: The Associated Press is hiring for multiple positions, including a newsletter and franchise editor and an AP News live blog news editor. Candidates for both positions should have at least three years of editing or reporting experience. The salary is $85,000 for the newsletter editor and $98,000-$108,000 for the news editor, Both positions can be based in New York or Washington, DC. The deadline to apply for both roles is October 31. 

NEW: The New York Times is hiring for multiple positions, including a News Print Hub senior staff editor to elevate the quality of the news section in the daily paper, a NYT Cooking video journalist to pitch and produce video content, a The Morning editor to lead the newsletter’s team, and a news reporter and senior editor for the Well desk. NEW: The Associated Press is hiring a news editor to “help lead [its] digital coverage of Washington, politics and campaigns, and the federal government.” Candidates should have at least three years of experience as an editor, reporter, or social media producer, and “professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.” The salary is $120,000. The deadline to apply is this Wednesday, October 18

CALIFORNIA

NEW: LAist is hiring an associate producer to produce social media and newsletter content. Candidates should have at least two years of production, editorial or related experience, and “fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in Southern California” is preferred. NEW: The Arizona Republic is hiring a Phoenix-based weather reporter to “write daily dispatches for the morning report and throughout the day.” Candidates should have at least two years of reporting experience, and some “previous weather reporting experience [is] preferred.” No salary or application deadline info was given for this role. 

REMOTE-FRIENDLY

NEW: The Associated Press is hiring a reporter to cover public health on its Health & Science team. Candidates should have at least four years of reporting or editing experience. The salary range is $66,657-$80,714 and the position is covered by the News Media Guild. The deadline to apply is October 26.

NEW: 538 is hiring a senior copy editor to “edit articles and facilitate the flow of copy through the newsroom.” Candidates should have at least three years of experience editing daily news stories, large features, and data-driven projects, as well as a “solid understanding of U.S. politics, particularly electoral politics.” The position can be remote or based in New York or Washington, DC, and the salary range for New York or Washington-based candidates is $86,320-$118,690. No application deadline info was given for this role. 

High Country News is hiring an Indigenous Affairs editor to “produce stories that are important to Indigenous communities and tribal nations across the Western United States.” Candidates should have “a deep understanding of Indigenous communities and experience working with Indigenous writers, photographers and illustrators.” The salary range is $72,493-$80,548. The position can be based anywhere within the Western US. The deadline to apply is October 20.

The Hechinger Report is hiring an executive editor to lead its newsroom’s coverage of education. Candidates should have at least five years of leadership experience. The salary is $150,000. The position can be remote but “preference will be given to candidates in the New York City area” and they are “exploring a preference for Virginia and D.C.” The deadline to apply is October 22. 

The 19th is hiring a managing editor to supervise its team of editors, reporters, and producers, including managing its editorial calendar. Candidates should have at least a decade of newsroom experience, including “at least five years of full-time experience managing journalists and editing a variety of story formats.” The salary range is $160,000-$180,000. The deadline to apply is October 23. 

Marketplace is hiring a Producer I or Producer II to join its Podcasts team to help book, edit, and research for its suite of podcasts. Candidates for the Producer I role should have at least five years of journalism, writing, reporting, and producing experience (or six years for the Producer II role). The salary range is $38.46-$46.15 per hour for Producer I and $42.31-$50.77 for Producer II. The position can be remote or based in Los Angeles. Both positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The deadline to apply for both positions is October 27.

-The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) is hiring a communications assistant for its international team to develop press plans, draft press releases, and more. Candidates should have at least one year of relevant experience, “as well as an interest in economic justice.” The salary is $57,854 and the position can be remote or based in Washington, DC.. REMOTE-FRIENDLY

Rest of World is hiring a senior development officer to “build and manage a portfolio of institutional and individual philanthropic donors, both in the US and abroad.” Candidates should have at least five years of experience “in a fundraising role; experience with nonprofit media is a plus.” The salary range is $120,000-$140,000. GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: -The Overseas Press Club Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholar Awards. The program is aimed to support “graduate and undergraduate students at North American colleges and universities or American students studying abroad.” “Winners receive either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work or a $4,000 fellowship to be used to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organization.” The deadline to apply is December 1.

NEW: NPR is accepting submissions for its College Podcast Challenge scholarship. The contest requires that students “create a podcast on any topic they wish to explore,” which can take the form of “an interview, narrative story, or even investigative reporting” and be done “by yourself, with a friend, or with your entire class.” The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, while the ten finalists will receive $500 each. The contest is open “to students of all ages pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who have already graduated earlier in 2023.” The deadline to submit is January 5.

-Little, Brown Spark, in partnership with the Psychotherapy Networker, is accepting submissions for its New Voices Award. Applicants can submit a “non-fiction book proposal on any topic within any branch of psychology.” The program is specifically for “previously unpublished (with the exception of articles, academic papers, or self-published books) and unagented writers from underrepresented backgrounds.” The award provides a $50,000 advance, a ticket to the Psychotherapy Networker’s 2024 Symposium in Washington, DC, and a $500 travel stipend. The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 15

-The Neal Pierce Foundation is accepting applications for its Journalism Travel Grant. The grant provides up to $1,500 to “enable journalists to travel to cities within the US to produce one or more stories for a publication.” The grant is for both freelance and staff writers. The deadline to apply is this Monday, October 16

-California Humanities is accepting applications for its California Documentary Project (CDP) grant. The program provides support for “film, audio, or digital media projects that document California subjects and issues.” Funding is available in two categories: research and development grants of up to $15,000 and production grants of up to $50,000. The deadline to apply is November 1.

Narratively is accepting submissions for its 2023 Memoir Prize. The contest is for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives [of 2,000-7,000 words] from unique and overlooked points of view.” The grand prize is $3,000 and two finalists will receive $1,000 each. “Narratively editors will work with the Finalists to potentially adapt their stories into larger projects in different mediums (TV, film, podcasts, etc.).” The entry fee is $20 and the deadline to submit is November 30.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no deadline to apply; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: -Asian American Writers’ Workshop is accepting applications for its Margins Fellowship and Open City Fellowship. The Margins program awards a $5,000 grant and provides “an opportunity for four New York-based emerging creative writers to establish a home for their writing as they make progress on a book-length work,” while the Open City program offers a $2,500 grant to give “writers the opportunity to write narrative nonfiction on vibrant immigrant communities across the tristate area.” The deadline for both programs has been extended to this Sunday, October 15

NEW: The Wall Street Journal is accepting applications for its Summer 2024 US Reporting Internship. Interns can be based in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, and will work in specifics beats depending on location. The rate is $28.57 per hour for NY-based interns, but will vary based on location. The deadline to apply is October 23.

NEW: Insider is accepting applications for its Personal Finance Editorial Fellowship. The fellow will “assist with updates to [their] existing coverage, with a focus on banking content.” Applicants should have “some knowledge of or interest in learning about credit.” The fellowship is remote within the US, the rate is $20 per hour, and the fellow is required to work 40 hours per week for six months. The deadline to apply is November 4.

NEW: -Johns Hopkins University is accepting applications for its Good Science Project-JHU MA in Science Writing Fellowship. The program “aims to improve science journalism and science itself by providing [four] $5,000 reporting grants for feature-length magazine articles on the funding and practice of science in the United States.The articles “must be completed within six months of receiving a grant, regardless of publication status, and should be at least 3,000 words long.” The deadline to apply is November 5.

POLITICO is accepting applications for its one-year fellowship program in Arlington, VA. The program “features monthly training sessions, mentoring and editorial rotations for career exploration.” Fellows receive a salary of $60,000 “and [will] be invited to a full-time reporting role at POLITICO upon successful completion of the program.” The deadline to apply is this Sunday, October 15.

ProPublica is accepting applications for its Local Reporting Network Fellowship. The program will pay for five fellows from local newsrooms to work on a two-year contract taking on “ambitious accountability projects that wouldn’t otherwise be done.” Applicants must have some prior investigative reporting experience. The program will pay the fellows’ annual salary (up to $80,000) “plus an allowance for benefits.” The deadline to apply is this Tuesday, October 17 and “applications should be submitted by newsroom leaders.”

-Penguin Random House is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into multiple tracks, including audio production, publicity (adult), editorial (children’s), editorial (adult), marketing (adult and children’s), and editorial production. The internship is fully remote, pays $20 per hour, and interns are expected to work 28 hours per week. The deadline to apply is October 20. 

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its nine-month Gwen Ifill Mentorship Program. The program provides mentorship to women, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming journalists from underrepresented backgrounds through pairing with senior media professionals. The deadline to apply is October 22.

The Seattle Times is accepting applications for its ten-week Summer 2024 internship. The program is split into the following tracks: news producer, metro reporter, business reporter, features, copy editing, graphics, and photojournalism. The internship pays $18.69 per hour and interns will work full-time. There will be an info session on October 6 at 1PM PST. The deadline to apply is November 3. 

-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The deadline to apply is January 7.

-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee and the deadline to apply is January 8.
