Please note that we are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently split pitch calls into three sections: Time-Sensitive (Above Fair Rates), Evergreen (Above Fair Rates), and Time-Sensitive + Evergreen (Below Fair Rates) — and sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces, however, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. Omidyar Network is looking for pitches of essays and analyses specifically from disabled writers on “how disability justice should shape the future of *either* (pick one) technology, the economy, or culture/society.” The rate is $4,000 for 2,000 words. NEW: MIT Technology Review is looking for pitches of narrative features, reported essays, and profiles on the theme of “Build” for its upcoming print issue. The rate is $1-$2 per word. The Latinx Project is looking for pitches of essays on the theme of “Re-Collections: Unmounting Colonial Histories,” including reclaimed narratives, re-interpreting museum collections, and other topics. NEW: Lazo Magazine is looking for pitches of stories on “political and cultural pluralism – especially quirky international stories [with] a multicultural angle.” The rate is $400 for 1,200-3,000 words. Send pitches to [email protected] by November 27. 

The Lighthouse is looking for pitches of “nontraditional ideas to share about the holidays” from Black women, femmes, and folks from the Southeast. They are especially interested in pitches from Black, LGBTQ, disabled, POC, and women writers. The rate ranges from $0.25-$1 per word. Send pitches to [email protected] by “the end of November.” 

NEW: Insider is commissioning a “very specific essay along the lines of ‘My husband and I are both working parents, but somehow, he still has time for guys’ trips and football games.’” The rate is $250 for 600 words. Send pitches to [email protected]

NEW: Insider is looking for pitches of essays on anyone who travels “with their spouse or parent who works on a cruise ship.” The rate is $250 per piece. Send pitches to @nuclearunicorns on X.

Insider is looking for pitches of cost breakdown essays from writers who spent “a LOT for/on a recent trip to Disney” (like over “$1,500+ and [the trip was] sometime this year). Illinois Public Media is hiring an Urbana-based specialty reporter on a one-year contract to produce audio stories “that provide depth and context on issues impacting Black and immigrant communities in Central Illinois” and host its weekly radio show. Candidates should have at least three years of relevant experience. The starting salary is $45,000. The application deadline is next Friday, November 17.

NEW YORK CITY

NEW: NYLON is hiring a managing editor to “help guide the strategy for [its] editorial coverage as well as manage the editorial team.” Candidates should have at least six years of experience in publishing, editorial content creation, and distribution. The salary range is $100,000-$110,000. No application deadline was given for this role. 

NEW: Triple Canopy is hiring a senior editor to “commission and develop multimedia projects to appear in the magazine, as well as public programs.” Candidates should have at least three years of editing work. The salary is $50,000, and the position requires working 32 hours per week. No application deadline was given for this role. 

NEW: METROPOLIS is hiring a senior editor and engagement manager to “create compelling and thought-provoking stories for architects and interior designers.” Candidates should have extensive editorial experience and a “passion for sustainability, wellness, equity, and resilience in architecture and design.” The salary range is $70,000-$75,000. The position can be remote; however, they “prefer candidates for this role who are based in New York City.” No application deadline was given for this role. 

CENTRAL

The Illinois Answers Project is hiring an investigative reporter to join its new state investigative and solutions team. Candidates should have at least five years of reporting experience, including some familiarity with Illinois public records laws. The salary is $75,000 “but is negotiable based on experience,” and the position is represented by SAG-AFTRA. The application deadline is December 4. 

TEXAS

NEW: The Houston Landing is hiring an investigative reporter to produce traditional articles, videos, photo slideshows, and online interactives. Candidates should “have a strong track record of investigative reporting” and be “adept at using the Texas Public Information Act and the Freedom of Information Act.” The minimum salary is $80,000. No application deadline was given for this role.

NEW YORK CITY

NEW: -The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music is hiring a marketing and communications manager to help oversee the daily operations of its Marketing department. Candidates should have at least three years of marketing experience, including “strong copywriting skills.” The salary range is $70,000-$85,000. “Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until [the] position is filled.” 

NEW: BOMB Magazine is hiring a digital program manager to conduct SEO audits, maintain the website, assist in developing marketing materials, and other tasks. Candidates should have at least “two years of professional experience in digital platforms and websites.” The salary range is $56,000-$60,000. The application deadline is December 1. 

-Penguin Random House is hiring an editorial assistant for Berkley, its imprint for “commercial fiction, especially romance, and women’s fiction.” Candidates should have “excellent writing skills, especially in writing promotional copy.” The salary is $48,000. The application deadline is TOMORROW, November 10

-The Academy of American Poets is hiring an associate content editor and producer to produce and maintain content for its website, Poets.org, and its magazine, American Poets. Candidates should have at least three years of experience producing content for an online publication. The salary range is $40,000-$47,000. The position can be based in or near New York. The application deadline is next Friday, November 17

NORTHEAST

NEW: -Yale is hiring a web content lead to oversee content creation, editing, and production. Candidates should have at least five years of writing and editing experience. The salary range is $77,400-$130,900, according to its Wage Range band for 37.5 hours per week. No application deadline was given for this role.

REMOTE-FRIENDLY

NEW: -NRDC is hiring a senior grant writer to “write fundraising materials, including concept notes and proposals, project budgets and financial reports,” and more. Candidates should have at least three years of experience “writing for a high-volume non-profit Development department” and a “strong commitment to environmental advocacy.” The salary range is $100,000-$108,000, and the position is remote “with preference given to those in the following offices: New York, San Francisco, or Chicago.” No application deadline was given for this role. 

NEW: -The New York City Campaign Finance Board is hiring a content strategist to manage its small donor democracy and NYC Votes programs. Candidates should have some copywriting experience, and “facility with language(s) other than English would be a significant asset.” The salary range is $80,000-$100,000. No application deadline was given for this role.

-The Institute for Independent Journalists is hosting a series of free webinars throughout fall and winter for independent journalists, especially those within the BIPOC community. The topics include Business and Personal Finance Editors Panel (next Friday, November 17), Travel and Lifestyle Freelancing (December 8), and more. See their page for a full list of events.


GRANTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

NEW: McSweeny’s is accepting submissions for its Column Contest. Submissions can be any form and type of content, including creative nonfiction, personal narratives, serial visual columns, political columns, travel columns, art columns, and more. The “three winners will receive $1,000 and commit to writing a minimum of eight installments of their columns.” The deadline to apply is November 30. 

NEW: -The Asian Cultural Council is accepting applications for its 2024 Grant. The program aims to support “cultural exchange projects by individuals and organizations between Asia and the US and between Asian countries.” The grant provides “cultural enrichment opportunities” (not monetary funding) to artists and cultural creators, including art critics. The application deadline is November 30.

NEW: -MOZAIK Philanthropy is accepting submissions for its 2023 Future Art Writers Award. The program is for “emerging and established art writers, whose work engages the art on view in the current ‘WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.’ and ‘WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.: YEAR OF HOPE’ virtual exhibitions, or alternatively, any proposed written work that takes art as its focus in the struggle for freedom in Iran.” Selected pitches will be awarded a $1,000 honorarium to the writer for the full development of their piece. The deadline to apply is November 20. 

-CNN Academy is accepting applications for its Climate Storytelling From the Global South scholarship. Selected scholars will “attend a comprehensive media training program [in Abu Dhabi from December 3-10] … that covers various aspects of climate change reporting.” Applicants must be from the Global South, including “any developing country in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.” The scholarship covers the costs associated with the trip. The application deadline is this Wednesday, November 15

Narratively is accepting submissions for its 2023 Memoir Prize. The contest is for “revealing and emotional first-person nonfiction narratives [of 2,000-7,000 words] from unique and overlooked points of view.” The grand prize is $3,000 and two finalists will receive $1,000 each. “Narratively editors will work with the Finalists to potentially adapt their stories into larger projects in different mediums (TV, film, podcasts, etc.).” The entry fee is $20, and the submission deadline is November 30.

-The Overseas Press Club Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholar Awards. The program is aimed to support “graduate and undergraduate students at North American colleges and universities or American students studying abroad.” “Winners receive either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work or a $4,000 fellowship to be used to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organization.” The application deadline is December 1.

NPR is accepting submissions for its College Podcast Challenge scholarship. The contest requires that students “create a podcast on any topic they wish to explore,” which can take the form of “an interview, narrative story, or even investigative reporting” and be done “by yourself, with a friend, or with your entire class.” The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, while the ten finalists will receive $500 each. The contest is open “to students of all ages pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, as well as those who have already graduated earlier in 2023.” The deadline to submit is January 5.

-The International Women’s Media Foundation is accepting applications for its Fund for Women Journalists. The program provides funding to women and nonbinary journalists for either reporting projects or professional development opportunities. The amount per project will vary, but the average grant size from 2021 to 2022 was $6,000. Applications are “accepted on a rolling basis and are open to journalists of all nationalities,” however, “applications may take up to eight weeks for the IWMF to process, from October 2023 to April 2024.”

-The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Deep Dives: Ocean and Fisheries Reporting Grant. The program is aimed at “freelance and staff journalists who wish to report on vital ocean and fisheries issues and are in need of support for their reporting projects.” The funding covers airfare, hotels, meals, records requests, data analysis/visualization, and other costs. There is no application deadline; they “accept grant proposals on a rolling basis.” 


FELLOWSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

NEW: -The Nieman Foundation is accepting applications for its 2024-25 Nieman Visiting Fellowships in Cambridge, MA. The program is split into two fellowships (International and US), and offers “short-term research opportunities to individuals interested in working on special projects designed to advance journalism.” “For fellows not supported by an employer during the fellowship, a stipend of $1,325 per week will be provided.” The deadline to apply is December 1 for non-US citizens and January 31 for US citizens. 

NEW: ProPublica is accepting applications for its two-year Ancil Payne Reporting Fellowship. The fellow will take on a mix of short-, medium- and long-term stories. Applicants should have “at least three and no more than seven years of professional journalism experience.” The fellowship pays $75,000 per year. The deadline to apply is November 27. 

The Paris Review is accepting applications for its six-month editorial internship in New York. Two interns will “assist with every step of the magazine’s production, particularly with fact-checking.” The program pays $20 per hour, with the option to enroll in health insurance, and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week for six months. The application deadline is this Wednesday, November 15

The Nation is accepting applications for its six-month Victor S. Navasky Internship Program in New York. Interns will pitch and write articles and learn about source confidentiality, fact-checking, and other tasks. There are five editorial internship slots and one business internship, “focused entirely on the publishing process.” The internship pays $18 per hour ($630 per week), and interns are expected to work 35 hours per week. The application deadline is next Sunday, November 19. 

Grist is accepting applications for its one-year Climate News Fellow program. The fellow will “write quick takes on the news, newsletter items, and more in-depth reported stories.” The salary is $55,000, the position is covered by the Grist NewsGuild, and the fellow can be remote within the US or based in Seattle, WA. The application deadline is November 26. 

The New Republic is accepting applications for its six-month social media and writing internship. The intern will draft social media copy, collect analytics data, write for the breaking news feed, and other tasks. The pay range is $17-$19 per hour and interns are expected to work full-time. The internship is remote, but applicants “must be based in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland tri-state areas.” The application deadline is November 30, “but please apply immediately if you’re interested.”

The New York Times is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Fellowship in New York. Prospective fellows can apply for the following tracks: graphics, photographer, Upshot data reporter, reporting (multiple beats to choose from), Opinion photo editor, Visual Investigations reporter, audience producer, audience, Opinion international editor, digital news designer, and print editorial designer. All fellowship tracks have a salary of $79,214.76 and are represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The application deadline is December 1.

-Hearst is accepting applications for its Hearst Journalism Fellowship. The program “consists of two 12-month rotations at [their] top metro papers and websites” as staff reporters. “Fellows will receive training, mentoring, and real-world experience,” plus a “competitive salary and benefits, including health insurance and moving expenses.” The application deadline is January 7.

-The Harvard University Graduate School of Design is accepting applications for its one-year Loeb Fellowship Class of 2025 in Boston, MA. The fellowship is aimed at “people in mid-career, with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the field,” whose work “focuses on improving the built and natural environment.” Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,500. There is a $45 application fee, and the application deadline is January 8. 

Sierra Magazine is accepting applications for its six-month editorial fellowship. Fellows will write for the website and print edition, fact-check articles, and other tasks. The fellowship can be remote or based in Oakland, CA. The rate is $20 per hour, and fellows are required to work 28 hours per week. There is no application deadline, and they are “evaluating candidates on a rolling basis.” 

USA TODAY is accepting applications for its one-year 2024 Election Reporting Fellowship. The fellows can be based in a number of cities across the US, including Helena, MT; Santa Fe, NM, Montgomery, AL, Lincoln, NE, Little Rock, AK, and Hartford, CT, among others. The program also includes one fellowship focused on voter access, which can be based in the Southern or Southeastern US, “ideally Mississippi or Georgia.” The pay ranges for the program vary depending on location. No application deadline info was given for the program.
