RESOURCE OF THE WEEK

As a freelancer, five words define my decision to get out of bed and write words for clients: “How much does it pay?” The answer, if I’m lucky, is an actual dollar amount — no “we pay competitive market rates” nonsense. Knowing how much money a publication pays before putting in the work of pitching is what keeps freelance writers afloat, which is why I rely on Anna Codrea-Rado’s #FreelancerPayGap project. The spreadsheet doesn’t just track an outlet’s rates, it also shows the disparities in pay based on a writer’s ethnicity and gender identity. Before you pitch an outlet, check this resource to see what rate you should be fighting for.

CALLS FOR PITCHES

***Please note that we only share pitch calls that have fair rates based on publicly available information. While we define “fair rates” as being above $100 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.10 per word for longer pieces, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate. If you have more information on a rate or exploitative business practices from a publication posted, email [email protected].***
