THREE QUESTIONS WITH A COMMISSIONING EDITOR

Bing, bang, bong, it’s time for another edition of your favorite feature. This week, I talked to Nora Caplan-Bricker, web editor at Jewish Currents, about their new Puffin Foundation Investigative Fund.

SH: What advice would you give reporters interested in the Investigative Fund who haven’t written about Jewish topics before, or who don’t identify as Jewish?

JC: Jewish Currents is both a magazine of Jewish life and thought, and a progressive magazine covering a broad range of topics. We regularly publish writing by contributors who aren’t Jewish, on beats that tie into the wider progressive project and don’t relate specifically to Jewish identity.

That said, the primary goal of this new investigative fund is to bring a form of rigorous accountability journalism to a Jewish institutional space where that kind of scrutiny is often lacking. But those institutions exert a broad influence on politics and policy, both foreign and domestic, and we’re interested in stories that intersect with our core beats while connecting them to a wide range of issues. We’re seeking pitches on foreign policy, electoral politics, immigration, labor, activism, criminal justice, and a broad range of other topics—especially when those stories tie into Israel-advocacy lobbying, Jewish communal funding, and other questions of accountability in the Jewish institutional sphere.

SH: The three criteria you list are: originality, feasibility, and potential for impact. What special ingredient would set a pitch apart for you?

JC: We’re seeking deep dives that will reframe readers’ thinking by bringing important information to light—revelations that could drive policy changes or enable powerful people to be held to account. The strongest pitches will identify not just a topic but a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. We’re looking for pitches that are as specific as possible about the access that will enable the reporter to tell the story, and the ways that the story goes beyond (or provides a corrective to) existing pieces that have already been published on a topic.

SH: Young reporters who haven’t done a big investigative feature yet may be interested in the project, but may feel intimidated by the scope. What kind of training and editorial expertise does the Investigative Fund provide?

JC: Reporters commissioned by the fund will be invited to attend a series of workshops on skills ranging from interview tactics and source cultivation to strategies for reading financial disclosure forms and requesting information from government agencies. Reporters will also receive extensive editorial guidance, from support developing a reporting plan, to help refining story structure and narrative techniques. All stories published by the fund will also go through a rigorous process of fact-checking and legal review.
