RESOURCES

Much like the underrated 2001 cinematic classic Rat Race, freelance writing is competitive, introduces you to strange characters sometimes played by Whoopi Goldberg, and occasionally produces monetary rewards. Relying on only one resource to find gigs won’t work — even the Study Hall Opportunities newsletter isn’t perfect. That’s why this new section will be dedicated to additional resources to help the rat race of freelance writing a bit less intense. Have resources you’d like to see added that have helped you? Send them to [email protected] for approval with “Resource:” in the subject line.

-The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Journalists Therapy Relief Fund by Sonia Weiser provides funding to AAPI journalists for “mental wellness resources needed to process trauma resulting from both their work in the media industry and their daily lives.”

-The Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund by Sonia Weiser and the International Women’s Media Foundation provides financial assistance to Black journalists facing financial hardship who can’t afford to pay for the mental health support they need.

-The Study Hall Transcriber Database will help you find a real human (not an AI program) to transcribe audio files you need finished quickly. Unlike exploitative transcription services, our base rate is $1 per minute, all of which goes directly to the transcriber.

-The Freelancing Guide/Editorial Contacts spreadsheet by Bitch Media senior editor Rachel Charlene Lewis compiles editorial contacts, pitch tips, and how much publications are paying.

-The #FreelancerPayGap spreadsheet by Anna Codrea-Rado isn’t just an invaluable source for finding the standard rate at an outlet — it also shows the disparities in pay based on a writer’s ethnicity and gender identity.

-The Pitch Guide Database by Tim Herrera has over 50 pitch guides for publications, including The New York Times, WIRED, Washington Post, National Geographic, The Verge, Bustle, Motherboard, and Rest of World.

-The Chelsea’s Guide to Freelancing doc is a 15-page guide with tips on everything from finding ideas and pitching them to managing stress and showcasing your work.

-The Missed Pitches newsletter is a weekly digest of rejected ideas from freelancers and other creative minds. Submit your pitch with a name and email address, and see if an editor or publication falls in love with the idea you just can’t quit.

THREE QUESTIONS WITH A COMMISSIONING EDITOR

In the wake of last summer’s protests over the murder of George Floyd by police, the idea of defunding the police became a major movement. For Angelica Cabral, this idea inspired her to launch What’s Next Magazine, a grant-funded publication about alternatives to policing. I talked to Angelica about what makes a good pitch at What’s Next, advice for writers struggling to shape their idea, and avoiding “parachute journalism.”

SH: Are there any key elements that make for a good pitch at What’s Next?

WN: A key element that makes for a good pitch is recognizing the solutions aspect of the story. I’m looking for pieces that don’t just report on a problem, but highlight a solution to it, which is different from a lot of outlets. So, for example, as it relates to alternatives to policing, you should be pitching a story about an alternative that’s working and has evidence of that success.

SH: What tip would you give writers who want to pitch, but are struggling to shape their idea?

WN: If you’re struggling but want to write for us, reach out to me! We can definitely schedule a call to talk through your idea together. Solutions journalism is new to a lot of people so I’m happy to help people who are still getting used to it.

SH: A major concern around reporting on police reform has been “parachute journalism,” which is where a journalist from outside of a community will go embed themselves just to extract a story and then leave.  How does What’s Next work to avoid this when fielding freelance pitches?

WN: I will always prioritize pitches that are from someone in the community they’re reporting on. The first three I’ve accepted so far reflect this. The first story, which we’ll be publishing soon, is even from someone who has been directly affected by the program she’s reporting on. I don’t necessarily buy into the idea that journalists need to be objective all the time and it’s hard to be if you’re reporting on your community, so I welcome people who want to write about something that’s been a part of their life (as long as we can get some hard facts to go along with it, of course).

What’s Next Magazine is looking for pitches of reported pieces on alternatives to policing. They are particularly looking for stories that focus on a solution that is currently working and have evidence. The rate is $0.10 per word for pieces of 1,000-1,500 words. Send pitches to [email protected].
