RESOURCES

You should know by now to never put all your eggs in one basket — especially if the eggs are publications that ignore your invoices. Freelancing is a juggling act, and relying on only one resource to find gigs won’t work. Have resources you’d like to see added that have helped you? Send them to [email protected] for approval with “Resource:” in the subject line.

-The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Journalists Therapy Relief Fund by Sonia Weiser provides funding to AAPI journalists for “mental wellness resources needed to process trauma resulting from both their work in the media industry and their daily lives.”

-The Black Journalists Therapy Relief Fund by Sonia Weiser and the International Women’s Media Foundation provides financial assistance to Black journalists facing financial hardship who can’t afford to pay for the mental health support they need.

-Britany Robinson’s Big List of Writing Deadlines compiles all the big upcoming deadlines for grants, fellowships, contests, events, and more. It’s updated regularly, too, so you can keep checking back to see what new writing deadlines you should be adding to your calendar.

-The Study Hall Transcriber Database will help you find a real human (not an AI program) to transcribe audio files you need finished quickly. Unlike exploitative transcription services, our base rate is $1 per minute, all of which goes directly to the transcriber.

-The Freelancing Guide/Editorial Contacts spreadsheet by Bitch Media senior editor Rachel Charlene Lewis compiles editorial contacts, pitch tips, and how much publications are paying.

-The #FreelancerPayGap spreadsheet by Anna Codrea-Rado isn’t just an invaluable source for finding the standard rate at an outlet — it also shows the disparities in pay based on a writer’s ethnicity and gender identity.

-The Pitch Guide Database by Tim Herrera has over 50 pitch guides for publications, including The New York Times, WIRED, Washington Post, National Geographic, The Verge, Bustle, Motherboard, and Rest of World.

-The Chelsea’s Guide to Freelancing doc is a 15-page guide with tips on everything from finding ideas and pitching them to managing stress and showcasing your work.

-The Missed Pitches newsletter is a weekly digest of rejected ideas from freelancers and other creative minds. Submit your pitch with a name and email address, and see if an editor or publication falls in love with the idea you just can’t quit.

PACER is a court records database for any reporting on court cases. It is technically not free, but you only have to pay $0.08 per page, up to 30 pages, and you’ll max out at $2.40. See this walkthrough from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists for more info.

THREE QUESTIONS WITH A COMMISSIONING EDITOR

This week, I zoomed all the way out just like I used to do on Google Earth in computer class and talked to Tina Lee, editor-in-chief of Unbias the News, a new, internationally-focused newsroom dedicated to “showcasing international journalism that breaks through geographical or structural barriers.”

SH: Are there any specific regions or topics you’re looking to cover?

We are open to pitches from anywhere in the world, but we are especially interested in pitches that challenge perceptions or stereotypes about your country or region. In terms of topics, we have a list of topics on our website, including stories that address secret histories, taboos, and of course cross-border pieces.

Personally, I’m super interested in pitches that give context for current events, pieces about unexpected uses or consequences of tech in various cultures, stories about the media, and contexts for social movements. My team of editors has different preferences as well, and we will select pitches collaboratively.

SH: The project offers in-depth support from your editorial team, as well as the chance to collaborate with other writers on a story. Can you speak more about these resources and why they were important to include?

We know from experience that not all journalists have the same chances to reach their audience, and often have everything to prove without receiving a lot of support from outlets. This project is a chance to experiment with a more supportive structure for journalists than the usual set-up. Our international editors will work together with selected authors to create the best possible story, and we will offer opportunities for skill building for all journalists who apply.

In the event that the story would be a great collaboration, we can help people find team-members. We will also push to amplify the pieces by offering republication opportunities, and in some cases hosting events on the topics where the authors have a chance to go deeper with their audience. We’re all about collaboration, so we are really interested in finding journalists that have a collaborative mindset and helping to amplify their work.

SH: Do you have any advice for people who want to pitch you? Or any ideas that you’re tired of seeing?

I am less interested in stories that reproduce traditional (positive or negative) stereotypes about countries or types of people. I would like to read pitches that have the potential to change my perspective and think about a place, people, or issue in a different way. I want context and background that most people don’t know and that you are uniquely positioned to reveal. I also like local stories that have larger implications — help our readers connect the dots.

One idea I’m a little tired of is “here’s an NGO that does this.” I want less background on the organization itself and more on the issues that they are addressing or the community they are working with. Two areas that seem very ripe for more exploration are: how social movements, like Black Lives Matter and ENDSars, connect and influence each other across borders, and how tech is being used in surprising ways in different cultural contexts, like Clubhouse in the Middle East and North Africa.

Hostwriter is looking for pitches on underreported stories with global relevance for their Unbias the News project. There will be in-depth support and collaborative resources available to all accepted pitches. The rates are €250 (about $300 USD) for personal narratives, op-eds, and shorter pieces, and €500 (about $600 USD) for long reads, multimedia pieces, and investigations. See their pitch guide for more info.
